[Elecraft] Noise Reduction
I have been involved with a project developed by Peter Rhodes of the UK that started as a way to improve the NR in his Pick a Star trx. It appears that the project is nearing the limits of what can be done and will hopefully go public soon. The project is called nitPic and operates on the audio output (phones) under Peter's software. It is truly amazing what it can do. Briefly it has two modes, SSB and CW. It processes the audio in 'bins' or slices. As each bin is processed the SW decides if it is signal or noise; if signal it is enhanced and if noise it is reduced. Sounds simple. It almost completely eliminates a CW signal if in SSB mode and vice versa eliminates a SSB signal if in CW mode. I have been able to bring out CW signals from the noise floor that do not show the slightest trace on my PowerSDR waterfall/spectrum display. So good things are happening and improvements are in the works. Re: [Elecraft] Mag loop bender
My badforgot to mention the sand. PJH - Original Message - OK, enough, If you don't want any kinks in it. You should slowly fill the tube with DRY sand and tap it until it it is packed full THEN proceed with the bending. IF you have packed the sand tightly the bend will resist kinking. I have used this for bending tubing over a pulley with good results. The pulley for the bend radius you need should to be progressive from large to final. For me it took three sizes to get to the final radius without kinks. Works with aluminum and copper. Does not work on conduit. [Elecraft] gennovation keypad
I have been trying to follow the adventures of those of you interested in using a Genovation Keypad with a K3 or K3s and I believe the waters have become muddied a bit. I think the gentleman wants to do what i want to do and that is to use a Genovation connected to the radio without having a P3 involved. Maybe I'm wrong. As stated before, I have used a G-keypad on my KX3 for several years and it is convenient and works well. However I have not been able to make it work with the K3 in any of the ways I have tried to set it up. Firstly I believe I do not know what the data stream data the K3 requires; I thought it was serial ASCI. It is obviously different from what the KX3 requires. But then again I may be wrong. The Genovation, in my understanding, sends ASCI text via the serial port to the KX3 where it is interpreted as commends and executed. What am I missing here? If the K3 accepts ASCI commands from the Elecraft K3 Utility and the KX3 accepts ASCI commands from the KX3 Utility, why are they not interchangeable? 73 and keep it civil, PJH, N7PXY __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Genovation Keypad on the K3/P3, solved
I've been using a 24 key Genovations keypad on my KX3 for almost 2 years now. Love it. One button press to change all manner of things without having to remember all the steps and commands. 24 keys with the shift/toggle feature gives me 46 macros. I used msWORD and a template by VR2SS, IIRC, to add colors and text to the labels, then, as mentioned, cut them out and put them under the key caps. Very professional looking. [Elecraft] KX3 (or, K3) 2-meter solid-state amplifier
Crafting a case very similar to the one pictured on the sited page is relatively easy. While I do have a brake and no problem crafting cases I will tell you how I would do it without major tools. 1. Do a drawing of the case with sizes and flanges laid out piece by piece; top, bottom, sides, ends, etc. 2. Locate the nearest Metal Supermarket. I use them as they are close and reasonable and I know them and their stock. They will cut your metal pieces to size very cheaply. Often free. 3. Contact them for a quote and order. They may mail your order, I do not know. There are other places who do the same type business; small orders with cutting. 4. Cut 2 hardwood blocks that just fits inside the lines of the front and rear panels. They should be smaller by the thickness of the metal material plus a smidgeon. 5. Carefully fit the blocks within the lines of the panel you are bending and clamp in a vice. The blocks should be aligned as well as with in the panel lines; Use double sided tape if necessary. 6. Use another hardwood block as a "push block" and gently push and hammer against the flange all along its length until it is bent 90 deg. bending only a small part of the angle at a time. 7. The blocks are also useful when drilling the holes. Some may prefer to drill first but that makes hole alignment very difficult. [Elecraft] K3: Any gain with a new synth?
I consider myself a casual operator. I get on when I can, avoid the contests, rag chew a lot, and have fun. I mostly work SSB with my K3 but am working on code speed. I use WIN4K3 as a control program and panadaptor. These differences are purely subjective and without measurement. All computer controls unchanged and K3 controls returned to previous settings. Before going to the new synth I had a no signal noise floor S meter reading of 4 or 5, occasionally 6 The panadaptor background had scattered 'clutter' noise and I could see very close adjacent signals but not read them. The noise floor 'line' on the display was at about -102 db and 4 to 6 db wide peak to peak After the mod I had a no signal noise floor S-meter reading of 2 to 3 sometimes 4 The panadaptor background was much clearer, signals more distinct and close together signals were easier to separate and copy The noise floor line was at -106 to -108 and the line was thinner by a couple db. [Elecraft] SMD soldering help
I have done a bit of 0603/4 but mostly 0805 size. What works for me is a small "helper" I made. Actually the first of two; the second is much more elaborate. I do my boards flat/horizontal in a holding fixture so it doesn't move around. Then I made a 'T' shaped wire 'holder' that rests on the 'T' crossbar. The leg of the 'T' is long enough to bend into a 'C' as big as needed to reach the part. The end of the leg is sharpened to a small rounded point about 2/3 the width of the SMT or 0.02" and rounded with emery paper. A weight is added to the leg an inch or so above the point. In use I place the part with tweezers or other tool and then set the holder tool working end on top so it holds the SMT part in place. Careful use of the solder pencil tip does the trick. Takes a bit of practice but worked well for me. My newer design works better but is, as I say, more complicated to build but as simple to use. Same principle though. [Elecraft] Keypad - Button Box
While all the above statements may be true here is my experience... but with a KX3 mind you! I have the model 684 serial 24 key keypad. It is connected to my KX3 through a "Y" connection to the serial port on the KX3 (ACC1 if I recall correctly). After programming, it has no connection to the computer. I ran the programmer program and programmed the keypad on a WIN 7 OS computer and had no problems other than learning the macro commands and the KX3 variants. There are no data conflicts as the keypad only sends and the other serial device on ACC1 only listens. As an example, if I want to change from PSK31 on 14.070.000 USB at 1.0 watts (to drive my HR-50 at 25 wts) to SSB on 40 meters at 10 watts and set the filter to 2.5kHz I push one button. I have keys set up for various filter widths, band and mode changes, etc. Works for me. Programmer also comes with a drawing file that lets you design and print your own key cap legends. I first heard or saw this keypad a year or so ago when Jean-Francois Menard, VA2SS, posted his project. He used the 35 key version. He later published the project particulars in an article in QST I believe. He and several others were very helpful with macro issues and building the serial cable with the KX3 plug on one end. Turns out I was trying to use a damaged length of cable. My question regards the last statement on pg 5 of the procedure yhat says " Be sure to perform the RECAL calibration at room temperature, as described in your KX3 manual.". Is this statement in referance to the 'Initial Reference Calibration' done at the start of the procedure or to the procedure in the manual which I have already done? [Elecraft] Digi modes...what am I missing?
I work PSK31 almost exclusively. Mostly because I like it but partly because my CW is not up to being "ON THE AIR" ... yet. The benefit to me is I can occasionally pull in a DX station with <5watts and a simple dipole antenna. It is a somewhat slower paced communication, and is concentrated around one small range of frequencies... no panadapter required. No laborious knob turning up and down the bands. That said I use macros to send the mundane cookie cutter info...na me, location, sig report, etc. all nicely formatted while I fill in the logging info and look up the other station's QRZ page. The QRZ page gives me an insight into the other ham's interests, most times, some are pretty sketchy, that I can use to start a 'real' conversation. As in other modes you make it suit your style. If you read the mail a bit before hitting the xmt you'll see who likes to chat and who just wants a 'quickie'. BTW, I bought and downloaded the PDF version of Cady's book and printed it out and had it ring bound at the UPS store for less than $5 PJ, N7PXY __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Tx Gain Calibration
I have struggled with the build of my K3/100 #6937 (kit) for several weeks trying to solve these problem(s) myself. No joy! I have read and reread the manuals so many times that at this point I only confuse myself more each time I go over it. I really would like to get this thing on the air. :-(( Rx appears to work fine except for an issue with the audio gain being very low; control full clockwise for moderate volumn; and S-meter readings nowhere near what my KX3 or 22 year old Icoms read on same Rx signals w/ same antenna. I have tried to do the TX gain Calibration perhaps a dozen times manually and with the utility. No joy! Set on 160 meters Bypass ATU Dummy load connected ANT set to ANT1 Set power to 5.0 watts with control knob Hold TUNE; VFO shows 0.0 W - If I move power knob slightly CW I get 5.1W or CCW I get 4.9W & within a second it reverts to 0.0W If I use the K3 utility I get the followng msg; "...Calibrating at 1.900 MHz Calibration power settled at "0.0 W;" Elapsed time: 5 sec TX GAIN failed becaused transmit power did not reach expected value 5 watt calibration failed Same story for other bands and for 50 watt calibration Can someone point me in the right direction please. PJ, N7PXY PS - I read that the widest filter must be in f ilter slot #1 then narrowing as you go down slot numbers. I also see slot #1 more or less reserved for the FM filter which is the widest. If I do not have the FM filter but do have the standard supplied 2.7kHz 5pole SSB and the .400 kHz 8pole CW am I correct in installing them in slots #1 and #2 respectively? Or should I leave slot #1 open (I think not)? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 103, Issue 26
I have only seen pictures of a Hex Beam so really have no 'feel' for it. In all the oics it is mounted 'bowl' fashion with the curvature up. What would be the effect of mounting it 'down' umbrella style? Re: [Elecraft] Manual Pics and text discrepancy
I am wrong. It was pointed out to me that I had misread the page and after reading it yet again I find that I have got it wrong. Sorry, guys... carry on. PJ, N7PXy - Original Message - While reading the K3 build manual last night I noticed that on page 48, Fig.70 the text again emphatically warns to use a split washer under the hold down screw while the picture shows an inside tooth washer under the screw. I thought I'd bring this up as some people are very visually oriented and may use the wrong washer. I have assumed that the text is correct as in many other places in the manual a split washer is used for this type mounting. I could be wrong so maybe an expert will clear things up?? P.J. [Elecraft] KRX3 sub rcvr
I am in the final stages (testing and calibration) of building my K3. While building I reasearched a bit more into the sub receiver thing and decided it was neither useful nor of interest to me. So... I have one new, never opened (except to inventory small parts) KRX3 for sale at a small discount. Contact me off list if interested. P. J. Re: [Elecraft] K3 additions
Thanks Mike. I would love to load it up but social security only goes so far. I'll need to get rid of my ageing Icoms (IC751A and IC740 ) to help pay for the K3 but that's for later. Anyone know of a good place to list used gear? Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and sorry if there is OT here but I tend to ramble... as you can see.hihi PJ, N7PXY - Original Message - __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 additions
I'm getting back to ham radio after some 20 years. I recently received my KX3 kit #1716 and the build went smoothly. At least it works! I am so impressed with it and what I hear from Lyle and others in the local QRP group that I ordered a K3 .. arrives tomorrow. Now I have something similar to buyers remorse... what addons would be best for my K3? I love CW and am working hard on getting my code speed back up but I do enjoy SSB in the mean time. I anticipate working CW most of the time when I get better at it. I have not tried any of the digital modes... yet! Hi Hi They seem sort of impersonal and a bit like cheating ;-)) to my way of thinking.
