[Elecraft] Good Battery for K3 Portable Ops

2013-08-12 Thread PGrig
I would appreciate knowing the experiences of folks who have run their K3 on
battery power for several (4-8?) hrs., with perhaps a 20% TX duty cycle. What
types and sizes of batteries seem to be the best balance of staying power and
portability?

[Elecraft] Routine Shutdown of KPA500: Use Front or Back Panel Switch?

2013-07-09 Thread PGrig
I'm sure this is a simple question, but I could not find the answer in the
Manual.

If you're turning the amp off (e.g., at the end of an operating session), must
you
turn off the switch on the back panel (assuming the fan has quit running) or is
it OK simply
to use the front panel switch for such shutdowns, leaving the back panel switch
ON most of the time? Does the unit, after the fan has stopped, draw any power
when the back panel switch is ON and the front panel switch is OFF?

I'm assuming that the back panel switch is for use when wanting to kill power to
the chassis altogether, e.g., when servicing it.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] Need a Fuse on the K3's Power Line?

2013-06-13 Thread PGrig
I was just looking at my new K3's (#7489) power cable, and see that it is not
protected by a fuse (although I think I saw an instruction to use an in-line
fuse if I connect it to battery power).

I see what looks like a 20a fuse (or breaker) on the back of my K3/100,
although I believe I read that it draws 25a continuous duty.

I was thinking of connecting my radio either directly to a 70a Astron p.s.
(which will also handle my 50w 2m mobile rig and a variety of other smaller
loads) or through a 25a fused receptacle on a RigRunner, itself connected to
the Astron.

To fuse or not to fuse--that is the question, and what is peoples' experience
with the RigRunner?
