[Elecraft] Finding an RS-232 port on the K3
I have a K3, that has been upgraded with the addition of a KIO3B. I have a USB cable going from the K3 to my computer, and the RS-232 RJ45 jack has the Elecraft Y-type cable going from it to both connections on the P3. I have a Microbit AS-1289, web based antenna switch with an RS-232 output. The manufacturer says that if I connect up this output to the K3 RS-232 port, the antenna switch will automatically follow the transceiver bandswitching. That would eliminate my need for manually switching the switch on the web. (I am in the process of remoting the station using remotehams.) Has anyone on the list had experience creating a Y cable for the RS-232? Or is there some other solution? I had thought about using the AUX connector on the K3 for the band change signals, however, the manufacturer says what I need is an RS-232. [Elecraft] Can not connect KIO3B USB with my MacMini
I am unable to connect the USB on my K3, modified with a KIO3B set of boards, to my MacMini, running OS10.9.5. I am not able to connect it to my MacbookPro running Sierra, 10.12.3, either. My Macs simply do not see the USB port. If I look at the “About This Mac” report on the Macs, I see that a “General Purpose USB Hub” is connected when the USB cable from the K3 to the Apple products is connected. I have made sure I have the latest drivers. I have tried different USB cables. I have Googled and can not find an explanation or a solution. I have done several system resets. Occasionally when I plug the USB cable into the Mini, but not the Pro, I get a message “USB Devices disabled - please disconnect the device drawing too much power” - doing that seems to do nothing. But I understand the KIO3B draws only 90ma and the Mini puts out 500ma. Elecraft has told me that they have users who have Macs and KIO3B working. Has anyone have a suggestion what I should do to fix this? The KIO3B boards were installed by Elecraft so I assume it left the factory working, although I have not ruled out a short or defect in the board that may have occurred . I have not tried the K3/board with a Windows computer but the same thing happens when I try to find the ports on Windows10 in Bootcamp. Thanks in advance for any help. [Elecraft] USB devices disabled?
I’ve just had the KIO3B USB interface installed on my K3. When I plug it into my Mac Mini I get the following message: “USB DEVICES DISABLED - Unplug device using too much power to re-enable USB devices”. What does this mean? [Elecraft] K2, FD, and N1MM
I got the K2 out for Field Day and it performed great! I’d never used the K2 with a computer, so I hooked it up and set up N1MM for the contest. I was unable to get the function keys to operate and N1MM was a little unstable, sometimes locking up. I was able to log contacts, but couldn’t send code. This isn’t the case when I use the same setup with my K3. I’m thinking that there are incompatibilities between the K2 and N1MM, probably due to the age of the K2. But I am not very capable with computers. Any suggestions? [Elecraft] P3 and Apple Display monitor
I've just installed an svga card in my P3 and I'm trying to get it to work with a 7 or 8 year old apple display monitor. It has a DVI male connector so I purchased a DVI to VGA adapter. But the setup doesn't seem to work. Any idea why? Any experience with this monitor and the P3 or is there a comparability problem? [Elecraft] Latest battery arrangement for KX1
I love my KX1, but powering it with 6 AA Lithium cells puts out just 1.5-2.0 watts. I’d like a little more umph, since most of the time I use the KX1 in the field, so I also have a less than optimal antenna. I’d like to power it with 12V, but prefer not to use an external battery. Just gives me too much to deal with. Has anyone rigged up a way to power their KX1 with internal LiPO batteries? If so, what make and model. If the batteries are internal, my feeling is the best way to charge them - to avoid fire hazards - is by removing the bottom half of the case. I realize the battery world is changing rapidly…. Anyone have recent experience with this? 72/73 Phil, W3HZZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Going 2014 with my K2
I love my five year old K2, and although I have a K3, I’d like to keep using the K2 for the field and digital. I’ve noticed that there have been discussions on the two items below on the reflector, but they are years old. Does this list’s collective brain trust have 2014 suggestions? 1. The SLA battery is about worn out, although it has been kept topped up using Don Wilhelm’s suggestion of the AA Engineering charger. I’d like to replace the battery with one that is newer and lighter - LiPO or LiPOFe. Has anyone done this, and can you suggest particular batteries, part numbers, and set up for charging. 2. Digital modes. Don has a nice solution to digital modes on the K2, but are there updates? What are others doing to go digital with their K2s? Thanks, Phil Philip L. [Elecraft] Follow up on KX1 Field Ops
Last week, I asked for the group's help when I was in the field with a KX1 and an antenna that wouldn't tune. Here's my report. I trimmed the 66' wire that I have used as an End Fed Half Wave (with other rigs and tuners) to 41 feet, added a 15 foot counterpoise, and the rig tuned just fine. I was unable to do anything about the input voltage, since I lacked a coax jack that would have let me feed in 12 volts, instead of the internal 9v from the Lithium AA cells. So the power remained at about 1.8-1.9Watts. SWR was below 1.5, according to the KX1's display. I had left the 3S Lithium battery pack at home partly out of laziness, partly because of my fears of losing it in airport security. I did make a few contacts, so - mission accomplished. I did experience unusual QRM in a campgound in rural Montana on 40 meters. It sounded like a switching power supply - and it was across the entire band. Mostly steady, although it did stop now and then. I thought it might have been a generator from a nearby RV but couldn't hear one going. Any ideas what kind of electric interference that might be generated from nearby campers? There was a mix of RVs and tent campers at the campground. I was in a tent. Lastly, are there any mods to the KX1 that might get it to 5 watts if I put a 12v supply on it? I did the mod suggested by Elecraft, but the best I can get is around 4 watts with a 12V. I do get that on all bands. I'm in upper Michigan this week. This time with my 12V 3S Lithium battery. Keep a listen out for me! [Elecraft] Antenna and battery for KX1
I'm on vacation with my KX1 and my antenna isn't doing well. It is 65 feet of telephone hook up wire and a 15 foot counterpoise. Nicely up 20' in a tree but getting no tuning on 40 or 80 but tunes nicely on 30 and 20. I'm on the road so can't make too many adjustments. Any emergency fixes so I can get on 40? Also am powering with Li AA cells and getting about 2 watts. Usually I use an external 12v battery so am a little surprised at output. Also battery voltage seems to go down quickly. A new set at now below 9v after 30 minutes of trying to make a contact. Is this normal? Sorry for dumb questions I have no manuals with me. [Elecraft] Modern battery for K2
Here is a nice little primer I have found on LiPO batteries. There are not the safer LiFePO4 batteries, however. http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-lipo-batteries.html I am still wondering if anyone has a part number of a nice Li battery of any chemistry that fits into the K2 battery space. Most of the batteries I have found are too large. There are tons of satisfactory batteries that I can use external to the K2, but I prefer a self contained rig. [Elecraft] Modern K2 internal battery options
I have a K2 with the Elecraft internal battery. [Elecraft] Remote Rig questions
As of today, I am the lucky owner of two K3s and of a wonderful salt water QTH. I would like to remote the seaside K3 to my city QTH using the Remote Rig options available on the Elecraft website but have these two questions: 1. What do folks general use for disconnecting the remote antenna and remote power supplies? 2. I am a Mac user, and although I have delved deeply into the manuals, it appears that the over internet setup is PC based. Has anyone done this with a Mac, or will be obliged to borrow a PC or install Parallels. And does Parallels have the right drivers to make this work. Thanks!
