Re: [Elecraft] Strange behavior when tuning around with SUB receiver LINKED

2009-02-22 Thread Peter Connors, F5VNB
My K3 does this sort of unexpected leap to next band up/down at tuning
breaks with linked or unlinked main/sub. I assumed this was because I
had the general coverage filter in the main but not the sub. Firmware 2.82.

No 'zipper' noise here except that little bit at the bottom end of 6m.

A bit sweeping, Joe. Surely any sane engineer would put the onset of
system ALC at a level *before* the PA goes into compression? (Such
systems would not include grid current derived ALC from some class AB2
PA of yesteryear.)

To avoid the well-known problems of selecting suitable ALC time
constants and loop gain, the K3 performs ALC at the DSP level: for any
signal, SSB or PSK31, doesn't this demand a flat transmit passband in
the system following the processing?

Good thread!

That's the right site. Try 'Support', 'X-keys Support' and then 'X-keys

If I get time, I may post some pictures of the box on my website.
But I will guarantee you, 58 keys is a lot, and they can do anything
the K3 can receive via the rs-232 port.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Still unable to set power correctly in, DATA A(sigh)

2009-01-04 Thread Peter Connors, F5VNB

Joe

Thank you for pointing out the difficulties in setting average power
across a range of modulation types.
Whatever the peak/average ratio of the modulation, the output power from
the PA is peak limited - so wouldn't the answer be a K3 power meter and
power control that shows/sets peak rather than average power? The power
control would then be set just once and the average power would be an
unavoidable consequence of the choice of modulation.

73, Pete F5VNB

Joe Subich, W4TV wrote:

Setting a power control calibrated for CW and expecting that
level to be accurate for PSK31 or any other arbitrary digital
modulation is complete folly and utter hubris. Among other
issues the wattmeter does not know if you are setting peak
or average power and it does not know what the average power
should be for the arbitrary data and arbitrary modulation.

For the K3 to accurately control the power level in all modes
the its directional coupler would probably need to be improved
by at least an order or magnitude. The response flatness would
need to be improved by at least an octave and the detectors would
need to be substantially more linear ... and that's just for CW.
To handle arbitrary audio inputs takes some knowledge of the
peak to average ratio as well as the peak duration (duty cycle)
in order to select the proper detector time constants. Every
voice every digital mode and every arbitrary data stream will
have different peak to average ratios and duty cycles. Do you
expect the DSP to calculate those values on the fly? Perhaps
the power metering should be derived from a DSP based spectrum
analyzer?

Accept the fact that the power level control is relative. If
Wayne and Lyle can improve on it that's great. However, trying
to hold .1 dB or even 1 dB accuracy from 1 mW to 120 W, 1.8 MHz
to 54 MHz with arbitrary modulation sources in a reasonably
priced amateur transceiver is a fool's errand.

Bill,

I am using the Infrasonic Quartet with a prebuilt 'run one' LP-PAN. I

Only possible snag: it is a PCI card so if you use a laptop you will
have to try one of the other solutions.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 KAT100 and BL2 questions

2008-06-03 Thread Peter Connors, F5VNB

Brian

Try a current choke 'balun' instead of the BL2.
As a temporary antenna I have 25m of twin speaker wire run out from the
shack under the roof tiles - that's about 7m - and then the remaining
18m split as a doublet. It hangs at an average height of 5m from a
couple of trees. The 'feeder' end connects through a current choke on a
short piece of RG58 to the KAT3 in my K3. The KAT100 has the same
matching range as the KAT3 and I assume the LC values are the similar.
I have no idea what the loads are but the tuner finds a match on all
bands 10-80m - but not 160m where the radiation resistance is tiny and
the common mode choke good enough to render the band effectively dead
unless I connect just the coax inner.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 KAT100 and BL2 questions

2008-06-03 Thread Peter Connors, F5VNB

Don

I agree that the BL2 is a true current balun using a balanced design
that chokes common mode currents while also transforming impedances to
ease a conjugate match - albeit one of the ratios is 1:1 - but my
coax-through-ferrite-beads unbalanced common mode choke *only* does what
it says on the tin without any impedance transformation, hence my quotes
around 'balun'.
Without it, the 1.8MHz common mode noise pickup from my abject antenna
siting is about S5/6 but with it the noise is S1/2. I leave it to the
atu to transform complex impedance.
