Re: [Elecraft] External speakers for K3?
Go for two, then you can take advantage of AFX. I use two small black communications speakers, designed for vehicle mounting and optimised for voice and are only 3-4 mm taller than the K3 -- one either side. Really does enhance AFX on SSB and they look good too. And they were less than GBP 7 each! Peter GM8GAX I would like to find or build an external speaker for my K3. RE: [Elecraft] K3: 60 metre coverage in UK
Tom Current K3s shipped to the UK appear to be set to US band limits. In order to transmit on the UK 60 metre channels you need to send a request to Garry -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- and give him your serial no. You will receive a quick reply and a small programme. Install it on your PC. This programme removes ALL band limits, whilst enabling all 60 metre channels it does allow you to transmit, subject to the band pass filters, out of band. The programme can also be used to reinstate the band limits. There is still one restriction left, high power can not be used within the CB allocation. Also I understand that the current firmware disables transmitting between 7.5 to 9.0 MHz at high power so that the 8.125 MHz IF trap on the KAT3 and KANT3 is not damaged. Wayne, can I suggest that you consider a mod to this programme that will allow Region 1 band limits to be set and some way of setting the 60 metre channels country by country. 73 Peter GM8GAX I think this subject has been covered before - so apologies for missing the reply: The UK allocated 60 metre channels extend down to 5.2585 MHz but my K3 will not transmit below 5.330 MHz and VFO B displays 'END'. Re: [Elecraft] OT: pwr rating of RG6, etc
I have been following this thread and find it very interesting, particularly as a Mechanical Engineer I have to read it slowly but may I comment -- 1, I don't know the details of Icom's protection system, but the ones I have seen sense reflected power, well actually it will be the voltage detected at the sensor against an assumed impedance of 50 ohms (50+j0). The actual SWR at which the protection will come into play will be a function of feedline impedance (which will, in practice, have a reactive element), feedline losses, antenna impedance and efficiency. -- If it's a problem - just add a few feet of coax!! 2, It shows an underlying belief in SWR as the be all and end all of antenna systems. 3, Many years ago now I had the opportunity to visit the main Naval transmitting station in the UK. Utilising frequencies from VLF to VHF their antenna systems were out of this world. But the majority were fed with 600 ohm open line across many kilometres of open ground. I recall one of our guys asking about SWR. The station chief just shrugged. One of the main HF transmitters was opened for maintenance and contained a large number of 4CX250 valves connected in parallel - not the easiest valve to run. So what should we be doing; as an instructor I see and hear a hell of a lot of myths about SWR and do try to correct them within my own understanding of the subject. But I do have to hand it to those who fully understand the subject and who take the time to explain it at the level of our examination system, which cannot be easy. Perhaps we should send this to the mythbusters and see if thay can blow it away!! Anyway, I am now going to browse my RadCom back numbers for a revision session. 73 Peter GM8GAX K2 #04027 P.S. [Elecraft] K2 - test mode
I have held my class B licence since 1972 and always meant to do the morse test. Finally after 35 years, with the help of John, G3FDN, at the Stirling Club, I have achieved 12 wpm. Not that this is now needed for HF operation. Still nervous about going on-air I have been practicing sending using my K2. Originally setting it to minimum power and connecting a dummy load. Then realising that I was the dummy and that there is a built in test facility; used this instead. This worked great, but a few nights ago I was practicing and also half listening to a local QSO on 2m (simulates QRM) when one of the local lads was trying out his new TenTec on 10m. Quickly changing to 10m ssb I pressed the tuning button to set up the antenna but only managed 0.1 on the scale. Took me while to realise what was causing it - had not changed from test to normal. No problem - missed joining in the test on 10m but learned something. Then this weekend did the same thing again but as I was already on the 40m dipole did not bother to tune and happily worked a couple of stations on SSB. Only then I realised that the K2 was still in test mode! So -- in test mode the K2 will not transmit cw - OK it says it on the tin, therefore will not transmit a tune signal but it will transmit SSB. I have the latest firmware on board -- So is this normal?? It is not a problem to me and may already have been highlighted. 73 Peter GM8GAX K2 #04027 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] UK import duty
Hi It is just too difficult to check. -- I had to pay import duty on my K2 - but the additional modules and upgrades purchased a year later went through the system with no problems. So why do they use the computer excuse. As you pay VAT on top of the duty (taxing the tax) you will get back a bit morte than the duty. My refund took three months with two telephone calls and two letters and to twist the dagger the letter with the refund acknowledged the additional evidence that determined the exempt nature of the goods -- the inference being that it was my fault all along. Re: [Elecraft] Anyone thats Bought a K2 Kit in the UK what Duty did youpay?
Paul The K2 is duty free in the EU. You will have to pay a fee to Parcel Post for handling the package through customs - depends on the import value, I paid 13.50 GBP, and the VAT. The EU class the K2 as Transceiver Apparatus for Radio Telephony with category codes 8525 2099 00 and 8529 9040 00. One relates to the K2 the other is for the additional modules. But don't worry about these, Elecraft quote them on the address label and the invoice. But don't be surprised if customs charge the duty. They did on mine (Jan 04) and I have heard of other cases. Parcel Force, although charging you to handle customs, can / will not help. I wrote to Customs with a copy of the invoice and the parcel label and was reimbursed.
