Re: [Elecraft] OT: RF interference from grow lights.

2020-08-21 Thread RALPH TURK
Hi
I had a similar situation here in Tucson AZ My spectrum analyzer,a Tek 492
showed groups of carrier like indications 10-20 db above the noise floor.
First think I thought "Grow Lights" I was told that the osculator in a grow
light is about 2.3 Mhz. The interference looked like it was every 2.3Mhz up
the band. Levels were all over the place. Called the local Power Co and after
lots of pleading they finally sent a tech to check it out. He connected up to
my dipole antenna and looked at the pattern and concluded it was a ground
connection proble. Got a crew out the next week and traced it to a pole out
about 2000ft from me. The problem was radiating
from the HV line for about 2 miles. Fixed the ground and problem
solved. I had traced to one of three poles using a portable radio tuned the my
main problem freq of about 5.2 Mhz and was able to hear the problem. The main
problem was a loose ground clamp up on the pole. The power company also used
an acoustic parabolic mike which pin-pointed the exact connector. New
connector problem solved

[Elecraft] K4

2020-04-19 Thread RALPH TURK
Wayne et all
My only concern before I order a K4 is how it will work with two high power
AM transmitters near me.
10KW day,1kw night KVOI south of me and a 50kw day only KUAT AM north of me.
At some time, I will need to borrow or rent a k4 for a week and see how it
behaves
The majority of my operation is between 2-3.5 Mhz, 4 to 7mhz, 7.3-10mhz, 11mhz
to14mhz.
I also use my radio on most ham bands. I currently use a K3 with all bells and
1000MP
The MP seems to handle the intermod better then the k3
The intermod is not caused within the radios but cause by rusty chainlink
fence, poor power line
grounds etc. My antennas are not the problem. I tried a sharp cutoff filter
for everything below
3.5mhz. No positive measurable results.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Features and current K3+

2019-09-20 Thread RALPH TURK
A feature that should be included in the "K4" is a software addition that will
allow one to
send digital via the rear audio in connector while operating USB (upper
sideband) with the
front mike. I use the current K3+ on AirForce/Army Mars. I need to be able to
switch from
digital (M110A) to voice on a moments notice so can not use the digital modes.
The mike is
hot while transmitting digital. Most mikes leave the mike element hot. The
PTT is a SPST
switch. This means that you have to be careful not to have any noise in the
shack while transmitting
digital. If there is a way on the K3, service was not able to point it out.

When you get a reply, please share. I use a KPA500 with a KAT500 on Mars freq
from 2-3.5 Mhz, 4-7.5 mhz
and 8.5 to 14Mhz. I have never noticed any problems but I have never checked
anything other
does it work and stay within its operational numbers.
