[Elecraft] In band rx IMD

2010-01-13 Thread Randy Downs
I'm a bit confused about an email I received. A fellow said "The
TS870S is probably still in your shack because of its INBAND IMD
performance. The ARRL does not do the inband IMD test anymore. Many of
the complaints about the K3's receiver is related to its poor inband
IMD performance. However there is various opinions on this."
What is he referring too? I'm not aware of this issue.Randy

[Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it?

2010-01-10 Thread Randy Downs
Well it seems K3 users put more mileage than some people think on
there radios. I think people buy with there ego more than with there
brains. So I guess this gentleman was correct in saying that Elecraft
has failed at looking at marketing. The first design criteria should
have been looks, second transmit power, and third weight/size of the
radio and lastly using depleted uranium for the knob. This is my
first Elecraft product when I bought my 2 K3's. I'll be honest I never
looked at Elecraft before as the K2 looked to be a toy. It took a bad
experience with the purchase of a newly released radio a couple of
years ago to make me take a look at the newly announced K3. I have
had so many rigs and it seems they all had issues and had to be
modified to fix the problems. Such as the nb being on all of the time
on unnamed yaesu models, very bad cw clicks, wax that got in to
trimmer caps, ( although I did keep the Ic-765 as the rx was good on
this one), glue that became conductive after a time frame, just to
name a few. It seemed normal for so long. Now don't get me wrong,
Elecraft has made some hardware changes as well as firmware changes to
make things better. But they respond and respond quickly to user input
most of the time. I would like to see a "big radio" when I set down at
the bench but after using it for well over a year now I don't miss it.
I would miss the performance though. I'm no big gun, I'm not into
contesting, but when sunspots are cooking and I want to be able to use
my rig without the front end being blasted with desense, then I am
very happy with my purchase choice. In the past on other rigs I have
actually had to turn the rig off and go do something else. I guess we
should end this thread but I wanted to see if I was missing something
here. I do believe Elecraft may want to look at marketing differently.
Maybe they could have scantily clad girls hand out hats. No never
mind. Thanks for all the answers guys.

[Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it?

2010-01-09 Thread Randy Downs
Sorry for the misspelling in the original message. It should have
started "A fellow". He told me that a "Big Gun" would never buy a K3.
#1 due to not having 200w, #2 due to ergonomics. He basically said
that people that buy a K3 don't use it enough to not see the inherent
flaws in the layout, size etc. of the K3. He felt the 1000d was much
better. I don't own my 1000d or MkII anymore. I did buy the K3's with
some reservation as far as it being more like my 751a as far as
bandswitching etc. But after using the K3 for over a year I have found
very few things to complain about. My Ft-2000 sure was prettier
though. Anyway I thought after being on this reflector for a long time
now that most people here were obviously pretty sharp, and use there
rigs quite a bit. I am not a contestor but I would guess those that
are have the basic requirements of a station with the antenna being
the number one concern, if not determination..
I've always found that the antenna was the most critical part of my
station. Then the transceiver as far dynamic range etc. Then power
output, in that order. What does everyone else think? I know looks to
a lot of people are #1, but I'm sure that the station I am trying to
contact really doesn't care.

[Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it?

2010-01-09 Thread Randy Downs
I fellow said "Elecrafts ergonomics and packaging is not appealing enough for
most people despite its receiver performance. They could fix it by putting the
K3 into a bigger box with a decent front panel and more knobs, but they wont.
They wont because they are listening to the wrong people who dont have a clue
about marketing and who dont understand the psyche of most everyday hams.
Hedging your bets on a small group of hams who turn their radios maybe 5 times
a year while ignoring those who use a radio probably every second day is not
wise."
in a message to me. I guess now the question becomes, how often do you use your
K3? I use mine at least 10 hours a week. We need a poll I guess.

Re: [Elecraft] Attitude??

2009-05-09 Thread Randy Downs
That's OK Jeff. It's just a hobby. Some people take it way to
seriously, just like it was not a hobby. That's OK too. We can't all
be rocket scientists. I actually talk to people on ham radio about my
other hobbies. And about life in general. I think that helps us
understand people and cultures more. Who knows, maybe we will grow
enough to allow our love to grow more than our anger and our egos. Now
that would make ham radio worth something! My dad used to say before
he passed on that he walked uphill 10 miles to school every day, both
ways! Hard to believe. Enjoy the hobby. That's all that it is.

Re: [Elecraft] My "Attitude"

2009-05-04 Thread Randy Downs
Or maybe you don't listen very well. I said nothing about a several volt
signal. I'm talking about 40 over s9. Maybe I should have explained it
better to the group. No the nb is not on as this will cause distortion
depending upon the blanking level. (IF) blanking. I expected that some would
trust that others actually know as much or more than some and know better
than making the mistake of feeding a several volt signal or having the
blanker on at a high level and not seeing distortion. Or maybe we can be
helpful and not flame. This is not cb so maybe we should be less critical of
others. Cb'ers would flame. And you have no idea that I'm an EE for General
Electric. I'll forgive you. Maybe we can just relax and act like ham's not
Cb'ers.. ;)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 on-channel strong signal overload?

2009-05-04 Thread Randy Downs
40 over is several volts? I thought it was around 5 mili volts. That's what
I am talking about. I've seen this distortion in signals since several fw
revisions ago. If I get time tonight I'll reload some earlier rev's.

[Elecraft] Steppir

2009-04-09 Thread Randy Downs
Well it looks like my K3 won't talk to my Steppir anymore. I saw a post a while
back where a gentleman was having a problem. Y cable, baud, all is ok. I
haven't used the Steppir or the radio in a week or so. Been busy farming. Any
suggestions? It's been working on this K3 and my old one for a year. I think
the Steppir interface board went belly up.

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 3.04 Power Output After Tune

2009-03-29 Thread Randy Downs
Here ya go Wayne.

Config TUN PWR nor

Config PWR SET per band

Band and Mode all bands phone usb and lsb

and front panel PWR control. 120w

I can't seem to change to cw mode and have it correct the low power out after
tune. I have cw wght set to ssb+cw btw. I actually turn the power control cw
(up) even though it is maxed on the lcd, and after several turns all is ok
until the next tune. I tried different setting on tun pwr and pwr set with no
change. I have cleared tuner mem settings with no help. This k3 seems to have
lower output than my other k3. s/n 2737 vs s/n1194. It's about 20w less on
phone. I've seen this since k3fw3r03 btw. k3fw2r82 and before has normal power
out after a tune, although still quite a bit lower than the s/n 1194. 100w on
s/n1194 shows 100w on my peak reading meter. 2737 around 70w depending on band.
I'm sticking with 2r82 for now.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 3.04 Power Output After Tune

2009-03-28 Thread Randy Downs
I can turn up the power control and it will increase to where it should be,
even though the power control is allready set to 120w. After a turn or two
the power goes back to approx. 100w. I can tap tune again and it will drop
to approx 30 w peak on ssb. Talk and turn the power adjust up, even though
it says 120w brings the power back up. It's then OK until I tap tune again!

They have also tried to improve the Ft-2000 via firmware upgrades. I would
say the 2000 plus K3's sold have made a difference. I have a friend that

wanted me to trade him mine for his 2 rigs and some cash from him... Right.

[Elecraft] K3 Beta firmware rev. 2.80: misc. improvements (AM mode, DVR, etc.)

2009-01-26 Thread Randy Downs
Tnx Wayne for the split bug fix and the AM fix. I've tried the split fix and it
works fine. I'll try AM when I get time. I really like the new weight, firmware
upgrade. My K3 now weighs 18.7 kilos. I feel better now. You may want to have a
menu for the new weight option so it may be turned off and on for those that
want to travel with the K3. I hope the next upgrade incorporates the new front
panel look I emailed you about. Oh well 10 is booming got to get back to it.

Re: [Elecraft] New Eham.net K3 review by QRPNEW

2009-01-26 Thread Randy Downs
Actually when 10 meters opened up last Saturday I fired up my 850 for a
while on SSB. I went back to the K3. I could get much closer to signals with
the K3 without desense. I have been very happy with the K3 using the N8LP
Panadaptor. I've been able to get very close to 40 over signals with no
problems. My other rigs won't. I use the K3 rx not PwrSdr. I drive the K3
from the PC though. I do wish the K3 was like my Ft2000 was as far as size,
etc. BUT I would not go back. On 160 phone I see 40 over signals all of the
time with no problems at all. I run phone most of the time. I'm very happy
with the K3.

Speaking of AM, how is everyone setting the K3 up for AM now? I used to have

[Elecraft] Per Band ATU setting

Is there a way to set the ATU on off setting per band? I don't need it normally
from 20 to 6 meters, but run it on 160 through 40. I would like it to remember

[Elecraft] KRX3 Problem Update

2008-12-27 Thread Randy Downs
After several pots of coffee, the problem was found. I gotta take up drinking.
The problem was on the subin board. T1 toroid, 2 of the wires did not have all
of the coating removed and did not take the solder well. Very evident after
tracing it down to the board. I wicked the solder out and scraped some of the
coating off and resoldered. My K3 is playing like a fine instrument again. This
might be something to check before installing the Sub Rx. I hate those
intermittent.

[Elecraft] KRX3 Problem

2008-12-27 Thread Randy Downs
Ok I have some Hunan chicken and it was great. Also I found that the relay K19
on the KAT3 was inverting my ant selection for the sub. If I selected 1 for
both then the sub was actually on 2 and visa versa. Don't know why or how. I
actually measured the connections with an ohmeter to the tmp con going to the
sub and it was! After several bset ant pushes it started working correctly!
Are these latching relays? All is ok now. Not sure how or why. If someone else
has this problem let me know. OR can explain it.

Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 Problem

2008-12-27 Thread Randy Downs
Ok. More weirdness. If the 2 receivers are on the same antenna ports the sub is
always way down. If the receivers are on opposite ports they work fine! I set
up the sig gen this morning and I can set A to 1 and B to ant2 and swap the
inputs with my sig gen and they are fine. If I put B on ant 1 and A on ant2
a-ok also. If I put them both on the same ant port the sub rx is always down.
They seem to be in parallel on the print. I must be missing something. I'm
going out with my wife to eat Chinese. Maybe that will help. The saga continues
this afternoon.

Possible but I would not think that would go out like that when it was
working when you shut downthen not when you powered up the next day. As
for what levels to be looking for, Gary needs to get involved with that.

Thanks I'll try in the morning. I checked them but did not unplug and plug

start checking it out. Is there a level chart available for the synth outputs
etc that I can check with a scope? I have a 400mhz. I forgot I have to take my
wife out for Chinese tomorrow so it will be tomorrow afternoon. Anyway I'll do
a more thorough check tomorrow. I have the feeling it's somewhere between the
preamp and the tmp con. Maybe the protection relay?

over on vfo A. If I touch the antenna to the tip of the tmp going to the krx3 I
still see no increase in signal strength. Preamp on krx3 does brings up
noise floor. It appears to be working. The signal appears to go directly into
the krx3 via J92. I guess I'll have to pull the krx3 tomorrow. Maybe a
connection on the board or a problem somewhere before the preamp. Bummer.

Searching with the main and talking with the sub. Dang-it.

[Elecraft] KRX3 Problem

2008-12-26 Thread Randy Downs
It seems my second receiver has went deaf. A 20 over signal gives me about an
s3 on the sub. I can barely hear the signal phone or cw. I unplugged the tmp
connector at the KAT3 and jumped the dipole directly into it with the same
results. Deaf all modes all bands. I checked connections etc and see nothing
obvious. Suggestions? Looks like it would be tough to get to anything to
troubleshoot. Worked fine last night. Got home from work and it was dead.

[Elecraft] Bug in split ?

2008-12-22 Thread Randy Downs
I have a strange anomaly here. If I swap a/b or run split it seems sometimes
when I swap if I have essb on sometimes It won't transmit. I have to go to the
essb parameter and turn it off then it works. I turn it on and it still works.
It seems intermittent unless I'm on 10 meters and then it seems to do it most
of the time. Tx light comes on but no output. Also changing modes makes it
start to work. Try this vfo b 28435 lsb. Vfo a 28435 usb. Push split, make sure
essb is on. It works. Push split again and it won't tx. Turn essb off and it
will tx. Turn it back on it still transmits. Push split it won't tx. Turn split
off and it will tx. I've had this happen before I put the second rx in but
wasn't sure what was going on until now. I've had it do it when swapping vfo
a/b on usb phone. I know lsb isn't used above 10 mhz but I've had it do it
randomly on usb and lsb. I think I've lost my mind.

Re: [Elecraft] Fw: Err Pl2

Thought I found the problem. I had pulled the top off and found a tmp cable
resting on the toroid on the bottom of the 2nd synth board. It ran for several
hours with no problem after moving the cable. THEN I put the top back on. It
failed when the fp temp got to 37 deg c. If I leave the top off it won't fail.
The fp stays at 34deg c. It's thermal whatever it is. I'll email Aptos. Ken

  Hi Randy,

I would be quite interested in what you found regarding this problem. I
encountered the same problem yesterday after having my KRX3 for about 2 months.
It only would give the error message you mentioned when trying to get the sub
to either of those two bands. Following a suggestion in the owner's manual
under the error codes, I did a CONFIG:VCO MD CAL, and it began to work on 10M,
still failing on 12M. At the conclusion of the CAL routine, however, it gives
the error code "ERR VCO E00228". I have sent info this to Elecraft to see
what I should do next and expect to hear back tomorrow. But I would love to
know what you have found as the problem seems the same as mine. Thanks for any
insight.

[Elecraft] K3 If Mod

2008-08-28 Thread Randy Downs
So far resistors will be mailed tomorrow to Jerry F, Kurt R, Steve Z, Burl B,
Tom K, and Ron S. Have not received any more requests yet. The Digi-Key p/n's
are as follows for those interested. RHM49.9CCT-ND 49.9 OHM 0805 SMD.
RHM15.0KCCT-ND15K 0805 SMD. I have not checked them with a meter, but did
look at the p/n on the devices and all looks fine. I have not had time to mod
my K3 yet as I am waiting for the Lp-Pan kit. I may this weekend if I get time
as I have to replace a couple of caps in the bpf section in my K3. Do this mod
at your own risk, yada, yada, yada. Please check with a meter, I will. Get you 5x

[Elecraft] K3 Noise

2008-08-14 Thread Randy Downs
I'm glad to report that I have found the source of the "static crashing" noise
on 10 and 12 meters on my K3. It was also the source of a higher than normal
noise floor. This was all caused by noisy trimmer caps in the 10/12 meter bpf
section. Mainly c180 but c184 is noisy also. Elecraft is sending new parts so I
won't have to send the radio back. Another person has had a problem on 20
caused by a different trimmer. Just an FYI. Love the rig. Can't wait for the
2nd rx.

[Elecraft] K3 noise

2008-08-10 Thread Randy Downs
Anybody have more noise on 10 and 12 meters than the other bands? My K3 s/n
1194 with no ant. hooked up and the 200 amp breaker tuned off and running on a
gel cell has an S2 to S4 noise on 10 and 12 all of the time. S0 to S1 on the
other bands. I also get "static crash" noises intermittently on these bands. I
live 1/2 mile from anyone else and have no such noises on my other rigs with or
without the ant. hooked to them. I believe I have a problem with the K3. It
does it worse when I first turn it on and then quiets down somewhat. Sometimes
it works perfectly.

[Elecraft] K3 s/n 1194

2008-07-13 Thread Randy Downs
I guess I spoke to soon. All went together very well and seemed to work fine.
After a good nights sleep I woke up and moved the radio off of my repair bench
on to my radio bench and hooked it up. All seemed ok until I went to 10 meters.
I started hearing static crashes like I was on 80 or 160. I unhooked the
antenna and they were still there. Very random. Up to an S7 sometimes. All mode
only on 10 and 12 meters. Yep I used a wrist strap and a mat. I brought them
home from work. I have a nice Speidel stainless wrist strap. Probably don't
make them anymore! USA made! Anyway K3 rf board prints sheet 2 everybody. The
noise goes away if I open W1 jumper by pulling the module. I left the module
out and jumped W1 and it comes back. If I pull W3 pa bypass, (I believe this is
the small pc board I pulled when I installed the 100w PA) the noise is still
there.I pulled the 100w pa and the lp board and it's still there. Looks like it
may be a problem around the t-r switch on the rf board. The noise is totally
random. Flexing, freezing or heating seems to do nothing. It may be ok for 5
minutes and then do it for 5 minutes. I've emailed support. Any others have any
ideas?

Zero issues. Will download latest Firmware tomorrow. Played with it a little

sounded great on phone. No CW yet. Need to get it moved out to replace one of
the other rigs. Probably the FT2000D. VERY simple to put together. Very nice

My IE version 6 works fine, Raymond, but sometimes it takes a minute
for their FTP server to respond. I thought that all recent IE
versions included FTP capability. But I use Firefox. I've found that
it's less annoying overall than IE. If nothing else works, maybe you
could download Firefox and try it. Or there's a number of free FTP
clients available on the web.

Re: [Elecraft] Price increases - I feel loved....

2008-03-03 Thread Randy Downs
I ordered a K3 about 2 weeks ago. Total for the 100w kit with tuner and
second rx was $2669.00. I paid that much about a year ago for a new
transceiver from an unnamed manufacturer with dual rx. Enough said. I'm sure
I won't be disappointed with the K3 purchase. I am very disappointed with
the other purchase. I don't mind spending money if I get a quality product
with support. The other company was on the users group for the radio I
purchased a year ago. That lasted about 3 months. 3 firmware updates and
still many problems IMHO. Hurry up Wayne so I can sell the other rig. I'll
lose an easy $600 when I sell it.

I got my "Katiegram" today from Aptos. A K3 kit with many options, ordered
7/27/07 to be shipped within 7-10 days.

I took note of the price increases back in January, and those posted today.
By ordering when I did, I saved a total of $200 plus. I am pleased with my
decisions.

I am not unhappy about the increases. If I had held off on ordering, I would
have been upset with myself, not the vendor. Elecraft and other American
companies have been taking a real hit lately with the weak dollar. A lot of
their business comes from overseas, and they get less for their fine
products when the dollar drops vs other currencies. I have no problem with
them increasing prices to offset these losses.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 hardware - The Mystery Mods?

2008-02-27 Thread Randy Downs

Steve;
2-17... Maybe they will really kick the process up. I can hope. I have
other rigs to operate, but would like to try my 1st Elecraft. I have and
have had many other brands. I was going to buy a 5K but then the K3 came
out. Then I joined this reflector a while back as well as the SDR reflector.
After 8 months of reading posts I cancelled The SDR reflector 2 weeks ago. I
made my choice. It seems that this reflector is much more open about the K3
(as well as the other Elecraft products) as it should be. After being a list
member for such a short time I feel that the Elecraft company/group is
trustworthy. Hard to find these days. I'm glad I found this reflector. If
they are willing to admit improvments in hardware I have no problem
implementing them. I work for GE as an electronics tech. and have no
problem dealing with surface mount at work or in my shop here at home. I
don't claim to be as sharp as many on this reflector though. My rigs from
other companies NEVER tell of an improvement in design as the model evolves
unless it is a well known problem. Then you end up sending it back. I like
Elecrafts honesty from what I have seen so far. Just send it, I will mod it
if required.

  Gentlemen,
if there was EVER a time to cut a reputable manufacture some slack, now is
the time to do so. You have all been told honestly what the manufacturing
problems are and what is being done to overcome them.

Take heart that you will get a great radio, and if something does not work,
they will do a Yomans job to make it right.

Beside, how would you like to be in the position of buying a brand new radio
line, only to have some serious problems arrise, and the manufacture does very
little to fix them?

I won't name the manufactures name but I bought such a transceiver, and a
whole lot of us are trying valiently, but nearly innefectively, to get them to
live up to their advertized claims for this radio.

I am seriouly looking at the Elecraft K3 now, and when some of you start
posting reports about its performance, I know this group will be truthful, and
thorough.

  Good morning everyone.

I don't post on these lists because most times I don't
feel qualified to offer viable information in most
areas. However in a manufacturing environment in a
major US corporation in which I'm still very active
and to a certain level qualified, supplier issues
plague us and in turn our customers. All it takes is a
hiccup in the supply chain to cause delivery issues
from that point down stream. All of this becomes very
visible in a Lean Manufacturing operational
  philosophy.

Whenever we are unable to meet delivery dates due to
supplier issues for whatever reason we notify our
customers the orders are going to be late then bow our
heads and take the beating we know is coming. In the
end the customers even if unhappy are glad we
communicated the delay so they can formulate their own
  customer response if needed.

[Elecraft] Comparison: K3 and SDR 5000A

2007-10-06 Thread Randy Downs
I sold my SDR1k due to the spur issues. I loved the radio, mostly. The
panadaptor I really miss. My Icoms scope is nowhere as flexible and slick. I
don't have any issues with BDR, IMD as I live in the country with no
competition. If the bands ever open back up and I get some real activity I may
see minor issues. I have not owned a K2 but have found virtually no one who
doesn't like it that owns one or has owned one. Hardly ever see one for sale. I
was going to buy a 5000. Then the K3 came out. (Almost). Now I am watching and
waiting. If the specs and performance is as good as it seems, and a panadaptor
becomes available that rivals the Flex, I'll the buy a K3. If not I'll be
leaning toward a 5000. I would prefer to see the pana, if one comes out, feed
into the audio card in my pc after the appropriate mixing etc. I do not want a
standalone DMU ala Ft2000 A waste of time and money. It would be ok for
contesters I guess. But for my application the pc based pana would be
preferred. That way I could window the sweep. The future looks bright for both
companies. And the ham community.

issue. In fact Rob Sherwood had some posts on a reflector discussing this. He
