Ed,

The power you request with the power knob is the PEP level that the K3
will control. That is regardless of mode.
The K3 compensates for the mode automatically.

The same should be true of the transverter output.

My KXPA100 transmits distorted audio on SSB, but works normally on CW and RTTY.
With 100 watts output, drain current is 11.7 A and supply voltage is 13.1 V,
down from 13.7 V on receive. My power supply is a pre-MFJ Astron RS-35A.

The KX3 with which I drive it operates normally on all bands and modes, with
good transmit audio. Speech compression is off and mic gain is set to 20.

Should I send the amp back to Elecraft for service, or is there another problem?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 167, Issue 9

2018-03-06 Thread Ray W2RS via Elecraft
Alan,

I have the KX3, KXPA and KPA500, but not the KAT. Instead, I am using the LDG
AT-1000ProII.

With the KPA off or in standby mode, I put the KX3 into XMIT and auto-tune the
LDG. Then, I hit ATU TUNE on the KX3. The power indication on the KX3 will
not include the KPA output, but it does indicate the drive power. So, I set
the KXPA for the proper amount of drive for the KPA, typically between 30 and
40 watts for 500-600 watts output.

The KX3 can also drive the KPA directly, without using the KXPA. With 12-15
watts drive from the KX3, the KPA will put out 200-250 watts (typical).

I really appreciate the wide variety of questions and topics that arise on this

?Recently, I learned some valuable information about how to setup my K3 so it

[Elecraft] KX3 forced firmware download

2017-05-15 Thread Ray W2RS via Elecraft
I had to do a forced firmware download today, and found that I could only do it
if the cable from the computer went directly to ACC 1 on the KX3. If you have
a PX3 connected, unplug the cable from the PX3, turn off the PX3, and connect
the KX3's ACC 1 socket directly to the computer using the supplied cable.

I found this out by trial and error. My user manual (Rev C5) does not mention
this required step.

[Elecraft] KXPA100

2017-01-03 Thread Ray W2RS via Elecraft
Don and all,

The KXPA100 is working fine now, well within specs.

You were right again; the system was way out of calibration. All told, there
were two problems: the calibration and the RJ-45 connectors in the control
cable.

I also replaced the 22A switching power supply with a big old 35A linear supply
that just loafs at the 14.5A current drain from the KXPA100.

Many thanks to all on the Elecraft reflector.

Ray,

Did you do the basic KX3 Power Calibration as well as the Power
Calibration with the KXPA100? See Appendix B of the KXPA100 manual.

The external wattmeter has nothing to do with it, the power is measured
internally by the KX3 and KXPA100 circuits.

You will need a good 50 ohm dummy load that is flat through 6 meters.

Ray,

Have you tried running the TX Gain Calibration on the KX3?
It may be that the KX3 wattmeter is not well calibrated.

If you do the TX Gain Calibration manually, it must be done on each band.
The KX3 Utility automates the process.

Don and others,

The good news is that you were right: the RJ-45 connectors in the control cable
were not making good contact. I fixed that and PA ON operation of the KXPA100
is now working.

The bad news, however, is that in Basic operation with PA OFF, the KX3/KXPA100
puts out full power, but the most I can get out of it with PA ON is 50-60
watts. The attenuator is set for OUT/AUTO and there is no more than 1 or 2
watts reflected power.

What should I try now?

Ray,

Check to be certain the RJ-45 connectors are fully plugged in. Some of
them are difficult to seat if you hold onto the cover boot. Pull the
boot back and push the plug itself in until it clicks.

Make sure the other plugs are fully seated - give them an extra push
into their jacks.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 with PX3

Yes, the power light is on. When I'm in Basic mode (PA MODE OFF), the KXPA100
draws 12 amps key down at 13 VDC. The power output is 100 watts. With PA MODE
ON, there is no output and the current drawn is 8 amps at 13 VDC. The power is
dissipated through the heat sink.

Hope this helps.

Does the power light on the KXPA100 turn on when you power on the KX3?

Ray,

Does the power light on the KXPA100 turn on when you power on the KX3?

I am not sure about your statements about "all the power it produces is
being dissipated"
Dissipated where? Into power output or into heat? Does the heatsink
heat up?

Similarly, your statement about "no power dissipated" when in basic mode.

Can you connect an external wattmeter and a dummy load, put the KXAT100
into bypass and see what the KXPA100 is really producing. That more
detailed information will aid in answering your question. If you can
measure the current draw and voltage during keydown that would help even
more.

I'd suggest checking the ACC2 IO setting in the KX3 to make sure Tx keying
isn't being inhibited. It's also possible that the interface cable is faulty.

There's also the usual advice to make sure the firmware is current. My club's
KX3 and KXPA100 were very unreliable until I updated their 2-3 year old
firmware. Mostly intermittent problems with the ATU and even recognizing
they're connected, but all that went away with fresh firmware.

Further to my last email, when I am in Basic mode, with PA MODE set to OFF and
the KXPA100 on/off switch set to ON, I get full power out and no dissipation.
When PA MODE is ON and the on/off switch set to OFF, the KX3 acts like the
KXPA100 is connected to it but there is no power output from the KXPA100 but
all the power it produces is being dissipated. Some setting is probably wrong,
but I can't figure out which one.

Any ideas?

You may simply have the power set too low (below 11W) for the KXPA100 to turn
on.

So are you saying that you have the KX3, PX3, and KXPA100 all connected in the
exact manner depicted in Figure 3 (which also appears in the PX3 manual) and
you're still experiencing this problem? Maybe I'm mistaken, but it sounds like
you aren't using the KX3-KXPA100 adapter cable. You can't just connect the
KXPA100 RS232 port directly to the KX3 ACC1 port.

I've been using the PX3 with my KX3 for a year now, with no problems. I've
now added a KXPA100, and find that either I can have full functionality of
the amplifier, or of the panadaptor, but not both at the same time.

I've set up the system for full functionality of the PX3 and "Basic"
operation of the KXPA100, using the ACC2 port on the KX3. That works OK,
but I'd like to have full use of the KXPA100's interaction with the KX3,
without losing full use of the PX3. The issue seems to be that they cannot
share use of ACC1.

Anybody have a solution?

I'm using an old (pre-MFJ) Mirage B1016. 10W in = 160W out. The receive

ahead of it solves that problem.. It's not full QSK but very few people
need that on 2m anyway.

A low cost option to consider.
