Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware 2.10,1.81 problems Update

2008-06-27 Thread Rich (KE0X)

As Julian suggested the problem is in MixW. It has been 40 years since I had
the RTTY training course in the NAVY, but, it has to do with the convoluted
history of RTTY. Although SSB is on the LSB on the HF bands below 30 Meters
and USB on those bands above 30 meters (Many reasons given for this most of
which are not correct) RTTY was based upon the frequency of Mark (2125) and
Space (2295) and the surplus military equipment available, unless you could
afford some of the high dollar HAL equipment (which was also used by the
military). Military protocol was to have the Mark the lowest tone in
frequency. This was ok with most equipment made BPC (Before Personnel
Computers). The PC brought out the conversion of telephone modems, use of
the modem IC’s and finally the PC sound card for generating these tones. If
you built a TNC out of a modem chip and did not include a reverse switch you
were stuck to either the low or high bands. This was fixed on the PC with a
button to reverse the signal that you could click on and copying. Some of
the Rigs treat RTTY as SSB, others put RTTY so that the Mark is always the
lowest frequency transmitted regardless of the band selected, and RTTYR
reverses this. I have no idea what the protocol is for DATA (perhaps
Elecraft can tell us.) As an experiment, try switching rigs in MixW and
observe what is happening to the signal frequency. You wil not be able to
chang frequency with MixW but you can see what happens to the signal as you
turn the dial on the RIG.

Rich,
KE0X

[Elecraft] K3 Manusl Update/Improvements

2008-06-02 Thread Rich (KE0X)

Reading K3s in WPX M/S - WOW! reminded me of some thoughts (concerns) I had
with regard to the K3 manual. First it is very difficult to find
information on the different settings and what their intended purpose is, I
have resorted to using a PDF file on the PC and searching for the term I am
looking for - sometimes it works sometimes not, a comprehensive index would
be a great help. When found, rarely is there an explanation of exactly what
the different settings are and what they are for. Second, as good as the
section on theory of operation is, it needs information supporting all of
the different terms, modes and selections (with there consequences), e.g.
IIR/FIR as explained by Dave Wooley. I had not heard of these terms before,
had no idea of what they meant and had to wing-it selecting the one that
sounded the best.

This is not important enough to delay completion of promised options - BUT
it should be high on the to-do list.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 USB-serial adapter recommendation

2008-05-24 Thread Rich (KE0X)

James:

Go to

www.keyspan.com/downloads/

Click on the model of the Keyspan adapter you have.

That should bring up a webpage of drivers for the various versions of
windows, including Vista.

My recently purchased Keyspan adapter had no Vista drivers - just a little
not directing me to the above. It included a utility to test the serial
port(s). It also allows you to configure the ports and to make the comport
number the correct number to work with your software. Also the Keyspan is
the only serial adapter I have found that installs properly (XP or Vista).
Others gave a warning that it was not compatible (the install instructions
said to ignore this message and click on the continue button) which caused
numerous other problems, such as stealing properly configured interrupts and
com port assignments.

 Hello:

Well it appears I discovered that not all serial cables are built the
 same.
I took the Keyspan adapter and my laptop to my trusty K2, and sure enough,
it polled just fine. That left me wondering 'what's the difference between
the K2 and the K3?' Except for anything internal which I felt highly
unlikely, the answer was the cable itself. I called myself substituting a
cable earlier but later discovered that this cable was formerly used to
relay status information from a UPS. They are not true serial cables
 apparently.

When I hooked up with what I KNEW to be a true serial cable to the K3, it
 worked perfectly !

As for Vista - who knows ?!! It looks like it will require a purchase of
 an
up-to-date device and drivers. Jeez, I wish ham radios had USB ports !

Re: [Elecraft] K3--Trouble with Power Pole connectors

2008-04-29 Thread Rich (KE0X)

I know the powers that be don't like complaints about the APP, but, the
Factory mounted APP's on my K3 had one of the blades recessed at least 1/8
inch from its proper position. Until I corrected this (which requires
removing that side of the cabinet and the rear panel) my connectors would
literally fall off from the weight of the short piece of power lead. It took
more than three attempts to get both of the chassis mounted blades in the
proper position. UN-SAT. They now stay together, but I would never put
them in a rig I designed and am presently considering some type of
replacement.

Rich,
KE0X

Robert Tellefsen wrote:

I thought these PP connectors were supposed to be such
 great stuff :-)

Mine keep falling out and losing power on the rig.

I assembled mine very meticulously, as I've read a lot of
the comments here about keeping the solder away from
 the contact area.

I assembled mine with the blade standing vertical in a
third-hand tool, so the solder never came above the end of
the cylinder that the wire end sticks into.

The blades are pushed all the way into the plastic housings
so the curved end clicks over the little ridge to keep it in
 its own housing.

When I insert the plugs into the receptacles on the back
of the K3, they go all the way to the end and bump up
against the end of the receptacle. No problem about being
 pushed in all the way.

It seems to me that there is very little friction/pressure
between the male and female connectors to hold them
together. I tried the little cylinder pin that is supposed to
help hold them together, but it quickly got lost when the
male connector fell out for the third time.

Can anyone tell me if the blades in these connectors need
to be bent a bit to maintain a good contact so that will stay
 together?

Otherwise, I'll have to replace the PP connectors with something
 more reliable.

 Thanks and 73

Re: [Elecraft] K3: VFO B follows band changes on VFO A

2008-04-27 Thread Rich (KE0X)

The frequency selected in VFO B is stored in memory and can be changed to
whatever you want, and thus can be recalled again.

BUT - and this must be a bug - on my rig as soon as I get to far out of the
VFO A band range (for example if on the 20 meter band when I tune below
13000) with the B VFO there is a click then a 3 to 5 S unit drop in signal
strength. Similar things happen on the other bands. This can't be right.
It appears that the B VFO is changing band pass filters even though I have
no second receiver and am listening to the A VFO.

Definitely should not do this.

ALSO, strange things happen to the 30 meter band stored frequency when I try
this. That is after observing that the signal drops as above, I noticed that
the 30 meter band changed so that both VFO A changes to the frequency I had
selected on the 20 meter band and the B VFO changes to the where I left the
B VFO while on the 20 meter band before changing down to 30 meters.

It appears that if you tune the B VFO out of range then not only is the
present band messed up but also at least the next lower band.

Even worse than above.

Rich

VFO B band changes when I change band on VFO A - is it normal?
Is it possible to change to ICOM behavior? - where VFO A and B are
independant - eg. VFO A on 160 and VFO B on 20 SSB and I can jump
 betwen them with one push.

[Elecraft] FS - KSB2 SSB Adapter KIO2 I/O Module - One more chance

2008-03-01 Thread Rich (KE0X)

No longer need the KSB2 SSB Adapter (with 2.6 B/W mod) or the KIO2 (with
cable) for the K2. Will sell separately or together. I need ay least $50
for the KSB2 $50 for the KIO2 ($100 for both), price does not include
shipping. If not sold here in one week goes on eBay. Both items include
manuals.

I am a retired US NAVY Electronics Technician (Spent 4 years as an
instructor.) and these are quality built components! Were working prior to
removal and were placed, immediately, into ESD bags.

Please note I did not remove the parts installed in the K2 for the KSB2
other than the standoff, if you have not previously installed a KSB2 SSB
module then installing the KSB2 also requires the installation of several
parts on the Front Panel board ...

o Resistor, 68.1 k, 1%, 1/4 W
o (5) Capacitors, .01 uF, 0.2 (5 mm)
o Connector, 2 x 8 pin male, .100
o Resistor network, 10 k, 4 R, 8 pins
o Transistor, PNP, 2N3906 AND

The main RF board will also require two three pin sockets and one 12 pin
socket.
o Samtec SSW-112-01-G-S
o Samtec SSW-103-01-G-S (two needed)
o standoff and miscellaneous mounting hardware

All of these parts are available in kit form from http://www.unpcbs.com/ as
the KSB2 Parts kit ($6.25 + $5.50 shipping handling). This kit also
includes the three RF board connectors, plus the standoff and miscellaneous
mounting hardware. You can also order each of these parts from Elecraft -
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Refer to the instruction manual for specifics.

These would be installed as described starting on page 13 of the KSB2
Manual.

If you already have the “No-rework” kits installed then you are a step ahead

Installation of the KIO2 may also require some modifications of your rig as
described in the instruction manual - depending upon your version of the K2
Main RF board.

Please read the instruction manuals in the section regarding installation in
the K2. These are available on the Elecraft webpage.

Will accept PayPal.
