That's OK Jeff. It's just a hobby. Some people take it way to
seriously, just like it was not a hobby. That's OK too. We can't all
be rocket scientists. I actually talk to people on ham radio about my
other hobbies. And about life in general. I think that helps us
understand people and cultures more. Who knows, maybe we will grow
enough to allow our love to grow more than our anger and our egos. Now
that would make ham radio worth something! My dad used to say before
he passed on that he walked uphill 10 miles to school every day, both
ways! Hard to believe. Enjoy the hobby. That's all that it is.

[Elecraft] K3 144mhz power

Is the 144 mhz module limited to 10 watts, even in a K3/100?

Re: [Elecraft] 897 vs K3

2009-06-12 Thread Rick Braun
I own both and all responses are correct. I tend to take the 897 travelling
because it seems indestructible and it would kill me to damage or lose my K3.
The 897 is a very good radio, the K3 is an exceptional radio. I originally
bought the 897 thinking I would use the internal battery feature in remote
locations, but it turns out to be of questionable value. With internal
batteries the 897 weighs about 12-13 pounds, definitely not backpacking
material. And with internal batteries you are limited to 20 watts output. OK,
so if you don't use if for backpacking, you car camp, and can carry a regular
UPS 60-90 amp/hour battery. The K3 also works just fine with a car battery and
may be able to tolerate a lower voltage. So it's a toss up on portability. If
you must make a choice, my recommendation, just one man's opinion, would be to
save your dough, wait, and buy the K3/10, you'll never look back; unless, as
Mr. Wilburn said, you intend to mostly ragchew on 2m/70cm repeate
 rs.

A lot depends on what is important to you, and what you want to do
  with the rig.

If you are contesting, its a no brainer. The K3 receiver performance
when surrounded by strong signals, is unmatched.

If you want to hunt DX, and dig out weak signals. I would go with the K3.

If you like to operate CW, and you want a rig that one of the best in
that mode, then the K3 is the way to go.

If you are going to rag chew with your friends and talk on local
repeaters, the 897D is a good rig.

If you need a rig with all the bands and modes of the 897D, then the
K3 is not a useful choice.

If you like to listen to foreign broadcasts, outside the ham bands,
then the K3 will require addition features to be able to receive those
  frequencies.

K3 is light years ahead of the 897D. However I would have to get brand new
because the asking used price is such that no one is willing to work with me on.

[Elecraft] K3-Signalink USB connection question

2009-06-14 Thread Rick Braun
There must be a simple answer to this question, I am having a brain fade. The
SignaLink for the K3 comes with an 8 pin mic connector for front panel
connection between the radio and the SignaLink. However, there is no receive
audio at the front panel mic connector, right? Thus, no waterfall. If so,
how do you get receive audio from the radio to the SignaLink? Thanks for any
help.

[Elecraft] Signalink connection

2009-06-14 Thread Rick Braun
Thanks everyone! Much appreciated advice. I too have an M-Audio 2496 in the
computer but want to keep it independent so I can listen to internet radio
while I beat the keyboard on PSK.

Again, thanks to all.

[Elecraft] Using NR tip

2009-06-23 Thread Rick Braun
I have been generally frustrated with the NR and stopped using it. Then,
playing around I turned off the effects, AFX and tried NR in vanilla mono. It
works much better. My ignorant theory is that AFX and NR together is more
processing than the audio can take and lots of content is lost. Without AFX
the NR is very effective. You might like it.

I wonder if the K3 knows it's own state at a given moment and can (could be
programmed to) remember it after a change of state. Is it possible to
create a stack with the last 8/16/32 changes to the state of the K3?

If so, a Button function for Undo/Back/Go Back could be useful.

TAP to Undo the last [Frequency Change/Band Change/Mode Change/Setting,
etc.]. ...another TAP to Undo the previous change, etc. ...HOLD to redo.

  Best regards,

[Elecraft] The 1500 watt amp

2016-07-30 Thread Rick Braun
I was heartened to see Wayne’s response to this rumor. It seems inceivable
that Elecraft would offer such a product, much less one designed by someone
else. Big amps are about being loud, busting pileups, . When receivers were
less sensitive and sophisticated, e.g. digital filters, digital noise
reduction, etc., you needed power to get in the front ends of DX receivers. We
don’t need that power anymore except to contest, i.e. blow out the ops with
less power. To me this don’t seem like the Elecraft ethic. They aren’t QRP
snobs, and they seem to value skill, intelligence, and cunning, rather than
brute power. Whole big amp thing struck me as odd.

[Elecraft] K3 Utility with Windows 10

2016-12-18 Thread Rick Braun
I downloaded the latest K3 utility onto my Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10. My
K3 is serial 2869, with RS232 to USB adapter cable. I downloaded the driver
indicated on the Elecraft site. Problem: I cannot, for the life of me, get the
radio to connect to the computer. Could this be a 32 bit versus 64 bit
compatibility issue? Any ideas or suggestions? By the way, the KX3 utility
works fine on this computer. I’m baffled and ready to kick the cat.
