[Elecraft] Illogical coding

2008-09-13 Thread Robert Ansell
Thanks to all that have replied. I'll not belabor the point however the
question has been somewhat hijacked. In my manual that I have read from cover
to cover there is no clear understanding of anything to do with a/b tapping
whatsoever as it pertains to split operation. I was only recently made aware
that my manual is one year old and that many changes had been made that
superseded the version c1 of nov 2007. I normally slave vfo a and b together so
that I can quickly be on about the right rx when I need to be. After reading my
manual it states that all I have to do is hit split and I should be able to
transmit on vfo b without further pressing of anything. It is stated that B/SET
can be used to set up VFO B independently however there was no mention that it
was a prerequisite for split operation. I've read with interest all the
postings and would still like to have split do all functions in one press of
that button. If there is compelling reason that it should be set otherwise that
should be a menu option. I've noticed that in order to set up split it is in
fact necessary to hit a/b twice closely spaced then hold a/b to enter split.
That is 3 presses of the button. I have downloaded the latest version of the
manual and am in the process of reading it. I just received my K3 three weeks
ago but yet I have a manual that is about one year old and I'm sure that has
lead to some of my confusion on this issue. Again I do not want to belabor this
situation as I stated in the beginning but only wish to clarify the finer
points of my initial writing.

Thanks for hearing me out

[Elecraft] Illogical coding

2008-09-11 Thread Robert Ansell
Hi All, I recently had to replace the front panel on my SN 1401 K3 because of a
blank display. This just arrived today with the latest software/firmware dated
9/9/08. All went smoothly and now I can see the display as it should be. I went
through all the cal and setup routines and all was perfect. I was turning my
attention to the bands and was looking to snag a new country on cw. I noticed
that the station was listening up in frequency so I engaged a split on VFO B
and set the frequency and tried to call but no action out of my key. I looked
at the display and discovered that I was no longer in QSK only VOX so I hit the
QSK button and VFO B came back and said N/A in the screen! I tried several
times to engage QSK but no way was I going to get the K3 to key. Going back to
XIT I was able to snag that guy but here is where it gets interesting. I called
Elecraft and asked what was going on and Scott had no Idea but asked me what
version of manual I had and discovered that I had an old version C that was
over a year old! I downloaded the newest version of the manual and much to my
surprise there was a note that is not in the earlier version about B SET that
indicated it could be set up in a different mode! Sure enough that VFO had been
set up for SSB and that was why I could not key the radio. Why on earth if you
are in CW on VFO A and press split would you ever expect that VFO B would ever
default to anything but CW on VFO B!!! This in my opinion is completely
illogical. Can anyone out there give me an explanation why I should be wrong on
this account? I might have been upset if I didn't go back to XIT to solve the
problem but I can just see in a contest situation where someone was unaware of
this that sparks wouldn't fly. What say you guys!

[Elecraft] K3 display and IF with SDR14

2008-09-07 Thread Robert Ansell
Hi All, My K3 serial number 1401 dumped the display. I can get it to display
for a few seconds sometimes but other times it is dead at start off. I've
removed front panel and looked for obvious things and even tried cool it to see
if it is a heat problem but no luck. I'm thinking it will turn out to be a bad
LCD driver as it seems to be getting worse with time. Just bad luck I guess as
already I got the bad board for the instability of the power output, a bad
optical encoder and a bad 400 hz filter. Good thing for Ham Radio Delux as I
was not able to see configuration data after doing a reset!!! On to an
interesting topic. I've interfaced my SDR 14 to the IF output and have been
having a great time looking at band activity and being able to select the qrg
from the screen. I just wizz up to a cw signal and have set the center QRG and
demod up so that the line in the middle of the screen represents the exact qrg
so I can hear the sig on the computer and the rx at the same time. Here is the
interesting part, When I apply filtering the IF on the spectrum analyzer shifts
with the two filters. I have a 400 hz inrad filter 8 pole and a 200 hz Elecraft
5 pole filter.I've got the center set at 600 hz on the analyzer and have the
filters set up properly in the configuration but there is a shift and as a
mater of fact that occurs at the same time as there is a drop out when using
the shift control as you roll through one filter than another. Can anyone shed
some light on this?

Thanks
