[Elecraft] K3 and noise

2008-12-23 Thread Ron Kenwood
I have a continuous S7 to S8 noise level at normal SSB bandwidths. If I
had to describe the noise, I would say it sounds like amplified
background band noise. The source is outside my house. Removing the
antenna drops it to S2-3. It decreases slightly at 15 meters and higher.
I have been trying all possible combinations of IF and DSP noise
blanking. About the best I can do is to reduce an S7 with a blinking S8
bar to a steady S7. If I don't look at the S meter and try to discern a
difference in signal intelligibility, I can't really hear any.

I have read glowing reports on the effectiveness of the noise blanker,
here and elsewhere. I am wondering if the type of noise is part of the
equation, and I just have a type of noise where the noise blanker is
less effective, or am I doing something wrong, or do I just have
unreasonable expectations?

Any suggestions?

My next step will be one of the noise canceling gadgets, if I can't
improve the K3's noise performance.

Happy Holidays

[Elecraft] K3 plus symbol on display

2008-12-01 Thread Ron Kenwood
I have really tried not to ask this question, but, once again, I haven't
been able to find the answer on my own. The plus symbol is below and to
the right of the B vfo indicator. The only reference I can find to this
in the manual is to offsets in FM repeater operation. This is non-split
sideband. What the heck is it trying to tell me?

[Elecraft] K3 Filters, Shift Control and RTTY

2008-11-08 Thread Ron Kenwood
I have been playing in the WAE RTTY contest. I am mainly using the 250Hz
roofing filter with DSP bandwidth at 300 Hz. I occasionally use the
1.8kHz filter with DSP set at about 500 Hz. In either configuration, I
find that I have to use the shift control to center signals in the
bandpass. Not sure if this is a hardware or software thing, but in any
case, I have two issues. One is that the minimum shift value is too
large to accomplish what I want to do at the narrow bandwidth, and when
I try to use the dual bandpass filter it appears that shift is disabled.

Am I missing something(highly likely), or do I have to request that
changes be added to the wish list?

[Elecraft] K3 VFO B problems

2008-10-25 Thread Ron Kenwood
I tried this yesterday, but I failed to give sufficient information to
describe my VFO B problems.

K3 1248

Firmware version 2.46

Software N1MM

P4 1.6 GB PC

microHam microkeyer

Working CQWWSSB mostly split on 40.

One problem and two areas of confusion.

1. When I attempt to us BSet, and leave the K3 in that mode for a period
of time while pushing buttons to adjust VFO B, I get a connection to
radio lost message. Not every time but often. I hit retry and it
reconnects immediately. Not sure if a certain button sequence triggers
this, but it is always involving BSet.

2. The manual says I should be able to directly adjust VFO B with BSet.
Does that include direct frequency entry? If so how. I can't make it work.

3. Is it possible to have VFO A tuning at one rate (slow) and VFO B
tuning at another (Fast). This would simplify split tuning on 40m.

[Elecraft] BSet problems

2008-10-24 Thread Ron Kenwood
Invoking BSet seems to be causing me to lose my CAT connection to the
K3. Not every time but often enough. Maybe a timing thing on hold?

On a similar note, how do I directly enter a VFO B frequency?(No KRX3)
I'm not having any luck.

[Elecraft] XLR microphone to K3 wiring

2008-10-23 Thread Ron Kenwood
I want to connect a mic with a 3 pin XLR connector on its cable end to
the rear panel of my K3. No instructions came with the mic. This will
require a female XLR to 1/8 inch mono connector. I have seen a couple of
different ways that mics may be wired. Balanced or unbalanced and
apparently there can be some variation in which pins are used for what.

I am guessing that I want unbalanced audio. The scheme I have seen for
this is pin 2 for signal, pin 1 for ground, and that is jumpered to pin
3. The 1/8 inch tip to XLR pin 2 and sleeve to XLR pin 1.

Does this sound right?

[Elecraft] K3 mechanical problem

2008-08-01 Thread Ron Kenwood
I have completed my K3/100 to the K3/10 stage. All of the functions
appear to work well. My only problem is an intermittent crackling noise
in the receiver that runs between S5 to 7 with no antenna connected. It
is definitely mechanical in origin and I believe I have isolated it to
the connections between the RF board and the front panel.

The noise usually occurs when powering up. I took off the top cover and
found that I could stop the noise by pressing the RF board in the area
of the roofing filters, forward to the front panel. Once it is gone, it
seems to be gone for that session with the radio.

I buttoned up the radio. The next time the noise occurred, I went to
take off the top cover and accidentally started to unscrew a screw on
the upper lip of the front panel. The noise stopped. This is reproducible.

When building the radio, I do remember that putting in the screws on the
bottom lip of the front panel took a significant amount of pressure to
line up the front panel holes with the 2D connector. I have inspected
the edge connections as best I can and they appear to be well seated. I
have checked the two vertical boards on the rear of the shield and they
appear to clear the shield, and do not affect the noise when pressed.

I contacted Elecraft support and they were sympathetic but I couldn't
reproduce the noise while they were on the phone so not much was
accomplished.

Finally my question. Do I need to tear down the radio and reseat the RF
board to the panel or is there an easy way out, or another possible culprit?
