Re: [Elecraft] New Eham.net K3 review by QRPNEW

2009-01-26 Thread Samir Popaja
I made some A/B testing in CQ160 last weekend, between K2 and TS-850S. They
hear pretty good the same but it's much easier to copy week signals with K2 if
you have S9+ signal close to you.

I suppose that K3 is even better...

Actually when 10 meters opened up last Saturday I fired up my 850 for a
while on SSB. I went back to the K3. I could get much closer to signals with
the K3 without desense. I have been very happy with the K3 using the N8LP
Panadaptor. I've been able to get very close to 40 over signals with no
problems. My other rigs won't. I use the K3 rx not PwrSdr. I drive the K3
from the PC though. I do wish the K3 was like my Ft2000 was as far as size,
etc. BUT I would not go back. On 160 phone I see 40 over signals all of the
time with no problems at all. I run phone most of the time. I'm very happy
with the K3.

I have on order -- and hope to receive in about 3 weeks -- Elecraft's K144XV
2 meter internal transverter module for my K3. I'm beginning to look at
available alternatives for an external 2 meter amplifier, and would
appreciate any experience anyone on the list has with any of the following:

1. Communications Concepts 875A (10 watts in, nominal 75 watts out, $120 for
a complete kit, $160 assembled)
2. Mirage B1018G (10 watts in, nominal 160 watts out, $350 new from some
dealers)
3. Maha MH-A103 (5 watts in, nominal 50 watts out, several used units
currently available on eBay under $100)
4. KLM PA 2-70BL (4 watts in, nominal 70 watts out, one used currently
available on eBay, BIN of $100)

Any other amps I should be considering?

"Must have" criteria: will operate on 13.8VDC power, requires no more than
10 watts input to achieve maximum rated output, interface easily with
K144XV.

Nice to have criteria: compact, quiet, less than $400 street price.

Max power output isn't all that critical to me; this will be used for VHF
contesting, not EME, so I don't need or want a 1KW or 1.5KW tube-based
amplifier. Based on my experience in VHF/UHF contesting, I think that either
75 or 150 watts out would be a big improvement over 10 watts, but that there
wouldn't be all that much difference in results between 75 and 150 watts.
Yes, I'd love to have 500 or so watts, but the price tag is too high for my
budget at the moment, given what I need to add to my K3.

Based on specs and price (that is, most watts output for the buck) I'm
leaning toward the CC 875A kit, but I can't find any reviews that discuss
its performance and reliability. It's uses a Motorola MRF247 MOSFET, and is
based on a circuit design in Motorola's Application Note AN791. CC has
added some features to the basic design published by Motorola, but the basic
amp is what's described in AN791. I like the fact that it's compact (6 x 3 x
4.25"), and that it draws only 9 amps at maximum output. The cost per watt
of output is $1.60 for the kit. The lack of a pre-amp doesn't seem too
significant to me, given that the K144XV specs show -144 dB sensitivity (14
dB improvement over the main rig's -130 dB specs). Is anyone familiar with
this product?

The Mirage B1018G has a lot more output when driven by 10 watts in, and it
includes a receive pre-amp with jumper-selectable gain ranging from 2.5 to
14 dB -- duplicative of the receive amplification in the K144XV -- but
it's also more expensive, and a lot bigger and heavier (12 x 3 x 5.5, 5
lbs.) The cost per watt of output is $2.19 given the best dealer price I can
find (which isnb't Mirage itself). Given that Mirage is owned by MFJ, I'm
also a bit leery of construction quality and reliability. At full output
this unit requires 30 amps, which is a minus factor for me. The amps/watt is
about 1.5 times the power supply requirement of the 875A.

The used units mentioned have their own attractions, but both are long out
of production, and thus support would be zilch, so they are lower on my
list, subject to input from this group.

Comments and "user reports" welcome.

John is correct. Diversity receivers require a common LO. This is
provided in the K3 with the aux receiver, but adding VHF transverters
to both receivers will not add properly if they are running separate
LO's.

I am in the process of setting up a 2m dual-polarity receiver using
two transverters but run with one LO driving both units. I
discovered that DEMI is developing a dual-Rx transverter (two Rx
antenna ports and IF outputs) that implements this in a single unit -
I'm on the short-list to get one when available).

Just connecting two separate 2m transverters will not ensure proper
phase relationship between the two IF outputs so one could end up
with a situation where the two signals null each other. This is
analogous to combining two transmit amplifiers. If the outputs are
out of phase energy from one will to into the other with disastrous
effect.

[Elecraft] SV: Re: K2 Transmitted Phase Noise? (Torsten Clay)

2008-10-08 Thread Samir Popaja
Look here:

http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/imd_measurements.htm scroll down to K2/100

or

looke here:

http://www.df9ic.de/tech/trxtest/trxtest.html

"The Elecraft K2 also has a low IF design using conventional VCOs which should
result in a good LO noise supression but does not do so well. We had two radios
on the bench, one from 1999 (DJ5IR) and one from 2004 (DJ0QZ). This last one
was tested on 14 MHz and showed better results than the older one on 28 MHz.
You may compare the ARRL test results of the LO noise that Elecraft publishes
on their own website and which is closely within our blocking test result (our
measured -95 dB RX blocking in 20 kHz offset is equivalent to -129 dBc/Hz LO
noise). The high level of TX noise shows that there seem to be design flaws
choosing too low signal levels internally. The AGC threshold is ridiculously
high (subjective impression). I also do not understand why it uses low quality
ladder crystal filters instead of a filter from monolithic duals like other
radios does. Overall it was the worst HF radio in the test "

I have also ts-850s and K2/100, hi

Best regards
Samir

It will be nice to have possibility to hear your own voice...

I'm also using this kind interface

Re: [Elecraft] ts-850s and transverter (XV144)

2007-02-13 Thread Samir Popaja
According to ts-850s manual, minimum power to set ts-850s is 20w.

Also, according to manual, one need to move coaxial cable from CN26 to CN25.
Now one can use IF OUT to drive transverter. So far so good.

Antenna contact on ts-850s uses for receiving, IF OUT uses for driving
transverter.

QUESTIONS:
-IF OUT -> How much power we have here? 1W, 1mW or...nothing in manual.
-PTT on transverter, what to use from ts-850s to PTT the transverter, how?

I did it with my XV220 several years ago, with no complications and
it worked fine. I don't recall details of my hookup, but I think I
simply reduced output power of the 850 to a very low level and drove
the XV220 directly from the main output. I also added an outboard
amp, and was running 100w. That was in Chicago, and I've since moved
across the continent to California, and am not back on the air on
VHF yet.

The XV144 and XV220 are essentially the same unit, but with the RF
design optimized for different bands.

[Elecraft] KX3, IF for XV144 (vhf contesting) (XV144 update?)

2017-09-01 Thread Samir Popaja
Hello,

I'm wondering how good the KX3 is for IF with XV144 in VHF contesting.

I have use K3 previously and now )Iwould like to have something little
smaller but with same good performance.

Little worried after I read this review:

http://ve3vn.blogspot.se/2015/02/kx3-review-by-qrp-dxer-and-contester.html

Is any chance for Elecraft to make (KIT UPDATE) for XV144 to use IF on
14MHz, the most transceivers has much better characteristic on 14MHz then on
28MHz. One can choose if they want to make XV144 with 28 or 14MHz IF,
depending on use (CW, SSB, FM).

Does anyone have the K3 2-meter option and use a solid-state linear
amplifier?

If so, which one. Also, maybe some information on the best to worst in
available 2-meter amplifiers as I have never looked into these before.

And, a friend suggested building my own 2-meter solid-state amplifier. Has
anyone done this and maybe I can hear a little about that too.

Thanks for any comments.

-Original Message-

I was recently studying the schematics of the KPA500 and looked at the
specification of the VRF2933 devices which are used in the RF deck of the
amplifier. I noted that the devices are rated to 150MHz which made me think
a 144Mhz version of the KPA500 would be a nice addition for a K3 equipped
with a K144XV 2m option (or indeed any 144MHz transceiver). Nearly all the
existing KPA500 metalwork, PSU and front panel PCB (with different firmware
and no band buttons) could be carried over with a different RF deck (perhaps
using the same VRF2933 devices and heatsink). A 2m version could potentially
be lower cost as the switchable complex LPF arrangement of the HF/6M KPA500
would not be required. The RF deck aside, the R&D costs would be low, using
much of the already proven KPA500 hardware. The 500W output is ideal for
here in the UK where the power limit is 400W. Even a 432Mhz version could be
created although the VRF2933 devices would have to be replaced with
something else - I suspect the demand for this 70cm version would be far
lower than that for 144MHz and would not be cost effective for Elecraft.

I currently use a Henry Tempo 2002 using two Eimac 8874 on 144MHz. I think
that a 144MHz KPA500 would be cheaper than obtaining two replacement tubes
for my existing amp! I would certainly be very interested in the purchase of
a 144MHz KPA500 (KPAV500 ?) - anyone else?

It's very light headset and it has very nice sound quality (both headphones

suggestions for MIC settings?

I ordered K3 on Saturday, expecting to arrive in beginning of next week.

HEIL PRO SET was very good on my IC-756PRO3 with HC4 element but I was
disappointed with the headphones.

[Elecraft] XV144 state of the art or ... Test of the Large Signal Behaviour of some 144 MHz Radios?

2006-12-11 Thread Samir Popaja
Hello,

Taken from, the http://www.df9ic.de/tech/trxtest/trxtest.html

"The Elecraft K2 also has a low IF design using conventional VCOs which should
result in a good LO noise supression but does not. You may compare the ARRL
test results of the LO noise that Elecraft publishes on their own website and
which is closely within our blocking test result (our measured -95 dB RX
blocking in 20 kHz offset is equivalent to -129 dBc/Hz LO noise). The high
level of TX noise shows that there seem to be design flaws choosing too low
signal levels internally. The AGC threshold is ridiculously high (subjective
impression). I also do not understand why it uses low quality ladder crystal
filters instead of a filter from monolithic duals like any other radio does.
Overall it was the worst HF radio in the test (OK, a 144 MHz IC910H is still
worse...)."

Is the K2 + XV144 really bad combo or the others transverters are much better?

Why I put this on the reflector?

I'm in processing to buy transverter, which I will use "to begin" with ts-850s,

After reading this test I was little bit scared and want the Elecraft community

If I read it correctly, this 'test report' and comments were for the K2
operated without the transverter, but all the data presented was for testing
with a transverter.

I am not certain of this individual's intent, but it would appear to me that
he was determined to present the K2 in a bad light.

For one, I do not understand why he chose only to operate the K2 with the
preamp ON when used with a transverter - the transverter should provide all
the front-end gain needed, and turning the pre-amp on should accomplish
nothing for weak signal detection, but certainly does reduce the IF receiver
dynamic range (and thus effects his 'blocking test'). In addition, he used
2 borrowed K2s, and we have no information about the health of these K2s,
they may not have been operating properly. Remember that the K2 is not an
'off the shelf' transceiver, and setup and alignment is done by the
individual builder rather than on a factory assembly line. Many K2s are
operating at top performance, but many are not. Alignment and calibration
are not difficult, but we have no assurance that it was done correctly for
the K2s used.

All in all, this report does not square with others which do document the
test setup and conditions used along with unbiased results. I refer you to
the ARRL lab test which do document their entire setup and test methodology.
Since the results in this 'report' are quite different than from other
reports, I believe he either had malfunctioning K2s to work with or intended
to skew the report.

[Elecraft] XV144 Performance

2006-12-17 Thread Samir Popaja
I think the best way should be to test the same K2 transceiver with available
transverters on market and maybe take IC746PRO for reference (most contest crew
use ic746pro for main rig on 2M) :

K2 + XV144 (ELECRAFT, http://www.elecraft.com/XV/XV.htm)
K2 + LT2S (SSB, http://www.ssbusa.com/transys.html)
K2 + TR 144 H (KUHNE,
http://www.kuhne-electronic.de/english/transverter/144mhz.htm)
K2 + Javornik (S53WW, http://lea.hamradio.si/~s53ww/xvrt/xvrt.htm)
K2 + (DEMI, DEM 144-28, http://www.downeastmicrowave.com/PDF/14428.PDF)

We all know that combo good HF RIG + XVRT outperform today available amateur
VHF transceivers on market.

Hello Group,

After reading some of the recent posts re the XV144 and the K2 as the IF for
a 144 Mhz System, I have for the last two years used exactly such a
setup...with exceptional results, and after several A/B Tests on the same
antenna system, I am satisfied that the K2 and the XV144 combination cannot
be beaten with existing off the shelf "commercial" equipment.

A big claim ? I don't think so, and after trying a host of radios from Yaesu
and Icom, the Elecraft System has proven to be superior from my point of
view...which is based on completed QSO's in the logbook and several wins in
the Ross Hull VHF/UHF Contest that is held in these parts ( VK ).

I have read the post by the German group re the K2 and the XV144...and I
agree with DonI can't quite see what they were trying to prove, or
disprove.

My most recent tests involved an IC910 and the Elecraft setup...the Elecraft
gear is simply superior in performance. Your options for VHF/UHF gear
are...TS2000, IC910 or the FT897...in these parts anyway. After having tried
the FT897 and the IC910 ( three of them ) I would never bother with them
again. The FT897 was simply terrible.

So that's my opinion...until something comes along...and it will...that is
better, you cannot beat the XV144 for $$$ value and performance.

William (Bill?):

Contrary to what some have replied, you DO NOT have to have the
KPA100 in order to drive an external amp to anywhere from 150W-600W
output (depending upon your amp). The K2 will drive most amps pretty
well even with the 15W available from the 'basic' rig. Of course, if
you do want full output from your amp, them the KPA100 will be the
better choice of driver. In which case you WILL NOT require the
device suggested below! The AMPKEYKIT (below) is only required if you
have the bare bones K2... the KPA100 and the K60XV (60M converter)
option both include MOSFET drivers capable of keying external amps.

[Elecraft] XV144 -> any plans for small 2m linear amplifier cca 100W

Hello,

I have the XV144 transverter, which I will use with tube amplifiers (GS31 or

I know that are many brick amps (MIRAGE) out there …

Hi Dave,

My K3 shows an IMDR3 of between 110dB and 105dB with slight variations
from the upper to lower side. This with the 400Hz roofing filter and
400Hz DSP filter at spacings of 100, 50, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 2kHz on the
20m band. Last week our quick and dirty first look also gave us numbers
in the same ballpark: IMDR3 of 106db at 20 and 5kHz and 104db at a
spacing of 2kHz.

We did find some spurs, last week, which were coming from one of the HP
signal generators, which slightly confused us at first. The spurs were
very far down, but they were there.

  Gary,

Since DXing on 80 meters often is similar to DXing on 160 meters, the
"testimonial" from W8JI right after he received his K3 may give you some
insight - Tom said something similar to: he wished that he would be the
only operator with a K3! Yes that was a "backwards" compliment to the
K3, but if you are familiar with Tom's posts on the Topband reflector
and others, you will know that he is very critical about any radio - not
so with the K3.

2020-09-17 Thread Samir Popaja
Hello,

Is anyone who remember the last price for Elecraft K3S-100 (new) with
standard 2.7kHz filter?

What price would ine expect for this one in good used condition these days?

Anyone remember the last serial numbers of K3S sold by Elecraft?

Thanks

[Elecraft] KX144 (kind of)

2021-09-21 Thread Samir Popaja
Hello Elecraft friends,

I wonder if Elecraft will ever make a 2m radio like old Kenwood TR-751 A,
YAESU FT-290R or something like that (format) ... of course with K3S
contest similar performance and at least 25W out?

What do you think, is there interest from Elecraft or the market for that?
