Re: [Elecraft] K3 not transmitting anymore

2009-06-07 Thread SidShusterman
This brings up the question of what is a good UPS for the K3 and usually
attendant computer?
I live in a rural area and I have the entire house on a 15 KW backup
generator but it requires 32 seconds to kick in. This morning we lost
power for 5 seconds and I was fortunate the brains didn't get scrambled.

Ron D'Eau Claire wrote:
Glad to hear it was such an easy fix, Maarten! But you do bring up an issue
that has appeared on the reflector before: the K3 *wants* an orderly
shutdown sequence to avoid unusual and troublesome issues.

It's easy to forget that radios like the K3 are more computer than radio
 - at least as many of us know radios, Hi!

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Firmware upgrade harder than construction...Help

2009-04-06 Thread SidShusterman
Dick,
This may not be the case. I struggled for 2 months to get my USB to
serial cable to work correctly. I bought the Elecraft cable, downloaded
the Prolific driver and I could not get,in my case, LP Pan to function
properly. I fixed it yesterday, after some local help (Tnx N3EAQ) and
an email to N8LP, by going to a straight serial cable. LP Pan and
PowerSDR are now working simultaneously with 4 other programs. The
telling event was when we looked at the COM ports every time I unplugged
and reconnected the USB cable the other ports though they were busy.
N8LP believes it is a conflict with the chip set in some computers. I
also installed 2 GB of ram and an upscale sound card thinking my 2.54
GHz CPU was having issues. I have a Foxconn 661MX motherboard.

It's unlikely to be COM1 or 2 - those are usually [reserved for]
 built-in serial ports.

Right-click My Computer, choose Manage, then in the window that
opens, click on Device Manager, then expand the Ports sub-tree.
You should see currently available serial ports there. See if one of
them comes and goes when you plug / unplug the USB adapter. If so, you
know which one you would be choosing in K3 Utility. If not, you probably
have a driver (or hardware) problem.

  Sid,

There is a variant of RTV that is OK on circuit boards. It is made by MG
Chemicals specifically for electronics. It is catalog number 1035, and
comes
in 85ml tubes. We buy it from Allied (www.alliedelec.com), stock number
661-0780. A datasheet is available at
  http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/1035.html.

It is non-corrosive and works very well to seal toroids to a PC board.

  Please let others know.

2009-01-03 Thread SidShusterman
Several years ago I displayed a product at a trade show. Although we had
working prototypes we did not have a pretty model to put out for the show.
Using a timer chip, some LEDS, a building brick , nice silk screening and a
snazzy case we allowed customers to pick it up and heft it. We received
lots of physical comments such as Say, you must have a lot of parts in
there. The working ones were secured to the table so the customers could
verify the product worked.

Elecraft continues to prove that perception is NOT reality.
My K3 should be here in 2 weeks. I am more excited than a ham with 47 years
on his license should be!

I congratulate Elecraft for a well thought out and implemented product line.
