Re: [Elecraft] K4 Delivery?

2020-10-29 Thread Steve Dyer W1SRD via Elecraft

I guess we need a "no troll" policy as well.
A mis-leading subject line.
No Elecraft content in the body of the email.
A link that leads to a politicized article.
That is the definition of a troll email.
Nothing about the K4 to be found...
The wrong person apologized in this thread.

I think you have a skewed view of the situation, probably understandably
so given your own vulnerability to that fire. I can find tons of media
information specifically on the Bobcat Fire with almost daily datelines
when I do a Google search, and I know from personal experience with
wildfires here in southern Arizona that agencies have to prioritize
literally on an hour by hour basis how and where they deploy scarce
resources. Slurry bombers are about the only effective countermeasures
in rough terrain (and even then only partially), since sending fire
crews into those areas is pure and simple murder.

Here where I live (dry grass, dry trees, hilly terrain) the aircraft
(slurry bombers, helicopter water drops) try to slow the fires while the
fire crews mostly just dig in their heels and try to save the homes ...
and there isn't much point in them doing so until the homes are actually
threatened. The fire that whipped through this area in 2011 burned
EVERYTHING within about 50 feet of my home, but the fire crews wouldn't
back off and they saved the house. If you can find the Google Earth
satellite pictures from July 2011 you can see what I mean (my .kml info
is available from QRZ.com page) ... everything is black except for a
cone where my house is at the pointed end of the cone.

With 4 million acres on fire in California within a short period of time
I think it's unrealistic of you to think that there will ever be enough
resources in reserve to cover everything in a situation like that ... at
least not when you would like.

My impression of the Bobcat fire here in Los Angeles, which got to

within 2 miles from me and is still burning 38 days later, is similar to
Bob's: fire agencies simply let it burn for days without any urgency
whatsoever, letting it advance into backyards in the northernmost reaches
of Arcadia and Monrovia before kicking into firefighting high gear at the
last possible second. In strangely similar fashion, the news media never
really reported with any energy on the Bobcat fire. I still can't
understand the almost total ignoring of this fire for so long. So I
resonated with Bob on this point, and for this reason I refute W6GJB's
claim that resources assigned to southern California deprived northern
California of the same. It seems that *nobody* had the resources they
needed. What a shame.

Hang in there, Bob. Please let us know if you've started a gofundme page

It was years ago and I was in KH6 for work. It was faster for me to
build another KSB2 (they were a lot cheaper then!) so I could get on
the air quickly.
Old style crystals. Firmware 1.04. D1 and D2 have one lead lifted

Includes new PSK-31 upgrade mod kit still in the bag.

Span and center frequency are adjustable. Fixed or tracking mode is
available. Scrolling mode (to prevent VFO cursor from going off screen)
has different options, similar to P3: full page, half page, slide, etc.

Next can the xvter IF out be used as the IF out on the K4D?

Probably it will work the same as a K3.

Or, is the I available for use o0n applications like CW Skimmer; This
requires a MME format.

I don't think that will work. Connecting a separate SDR to RX ANT OUT
would be a simpler way to do it. A program like HDSDR can keep the SDR
frequency in sync with the K4 frequency.

[Elecraft] Much Better Than Spectrogram

2020-08-09 Thread Steve Dyer W1SRD via Elecraft
Just watched Dave's video on the Classic Line from yesterday and the

Have a look at Friture. (www.friture.org)
It's currently under development, has more features, runs on all

Re: [Elecraft] SOLVED Radiosport MH-350ADJ with K2?

2020-07-29 Thread Steve Dyer via Elecraft
Thanks Don, I already knew the basics of a resistor between pin 1 and 6
from a simple google search, but I suspected there was more to the story
with the Radiosport headset. And there is.

After conferring with Dave, WI6R and super helpful owner, there is
already a resistor inside the CS6-ELK cable and two dip switches to
control whether to provide bias to the mic element. Some blocking and
filtering is also part of the circuit.

The only thing I needed to do to the radio was to wire wrap from pin 6
to pin 5 on the K2 mic header to provide 5V at the mic jack pin 5 in the
fashion of a Kenwood radio. Pin 6 was not connected at the mic jack. The
CS6-ELK cable needs the provided bias to act like a Kenwood, not a K2.

Then set the DIP switches and it works great. Now 1 cable and 1 mic
element for both the K2 and K3!

I've copied the circuit image inline, I just don't know if the reflector
filters them out. If so, be happy to email it direct.

Yet another reason why the RS headsets are so darn good and well thought
out.

If that is a dynamic mic element, no resistor should be used.
If it is an electret type, the normal 5.6k resistor should work fine,

[Elecraft] For Sale: K2 DSP Filter KDSP2

I dug out my K2 during shack cleanup and was going to sell it but it's

Selling just the KDSP2. It works great, but I prefer the sound and
simplicity of the KAF2.

Side by side the KDSP2 compared very favorably with a Timewave DSP-599zx
with v5 firmware.

Includes the manual, control board headers and mounting hardware.

 Subject: [Elecraft] K2 and K3 Key/Phone Connections

 Hi All,
Now that I've added a K3 the plugs for Key and Headphones have changed to
1/4 I'm thinking about building a connection central box with a rig
selection switch to switch these to the desired rig. I currently have four
rigs and plugging / unplugging these doesn't make sense, let alone the fact
 that plug sizes differ.
Any ideas about doing this? Any commercial solutions? At this point I'm
only interested in Keys/Paddles and headphones. If I do any data modes it
most likely would be only with K3.

 Thanks,

no Z).

-Happens with Tune or keying at all power settings
-Message displays at key-up when hand keying/tune, will happen quickly with
keyer and then fold-back power.

-Cal Cur is 3.5A
-Measured power output with external wattmeter (SX-200) and power tracked
fairly

closely to setting

-Will not happen if power is lowered to
-Checked power supply output voltage with DMM and it matches the K2 display
voltage +.4V. PS is set to 14V.

-Current draw on 40M @ 12W is 2.3A 13.1V (.5V drop), 17M @ 12W = 3.44A 12.9V

(.7V drop)

-On 40M Q7 Base is .611V Q8 is .612V
-Completely disassembled and visually inspected all solder with magnifying
glass and re-heated common transformers and chokes in final. Re-seated IOC
and
MCU (lifted slightly and pushed back into socket).

-Checked T4 windings
-Have done the DC voltage tests suggested in the various threads about
HiCurr
and everything looks normal.

[Elecraft] Was Working Fine... Then HiCur

2012-04-03 Thread Steve Dyer

K2 new/old build. S/N is 2338, built base K2 and KNB2 10 years ago, put away
and only finished up recently with KPA100, KAT100 and KSB2.

On air for couple weeks with good results. Suddenly starts giving intermittent
HiCur messages yesterday.

Tore out KPA100 and KSB2.

-Occurs on all bands tested (40, 30, 20, 17, 12, 10) (no dummy load, but
checked R with Rig Experts AA-54 and tested close to 50 ohm points with almost
no Z).

Have another few days here, would be nice to get back on the air if anyone has
an idea.
