[Elecraft] K3 tune button
I recently acquired a tube amplifier and find tuning with a fast string of dits works best. Of course I can use the built in keyer but I like the idea of the tune button putting out dits instead of steady carrier. Is this something anyone else would use? I use the tune button constantly for adjusting my 3 balanced tuners as well. Normally I have tune mode set to 5 watts. DIT MODE would be also have adjustable power levels. Yes I know there are external pulsers available. Just fishing to see if theres enough interest with solid state no tune amps becoming more routine. Re: [Elecraft] 160m loop experiment a big failure
I use only open-wire fed antennas here. I have 3 feedlines that come right into the shack to balanced tuners (Palstar BT1500A) and run the legal limit with few RFI problems. My house is in the middle of a large rhombic (unterminated) antenna. I don't have a station ground other than the AC safety ground at my shack. My shack is in the basement but Ive had this same setup on the second floor with good results. IMO, an outside ground thats brought to the 2nd floor is not needed and in fact will cause problems. If I had any coax feeds I would follow the SPG design for lightning protection but with open wire I have disconnects where they enter the house and ALWAYS disconnect and ground them (common ground to AC entrance) about 20' from the house. A balanced tuner will help a lot. Open-wire feedline probably isnt the cause of your RFI. It sounds like you may be on to something with your latest post. 73, Steve -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/160m-loop-experiment-a-big-failure-tp6895962p6916843.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 CW Reception
Now that I have my first receiver that actually hears whats on the band (K3 of course) I am in need of some education on cw reception. I have K3 #3397 with 2.7, 1.8 and 400 hz filters. Latest beta. When tuning away from a cw signal and the tone disappears I continue to hear clicking (not quite clicking but more like cw with no tone) for up to another 500 hz. Usually more like 250-300 hz. I normally use the 400 hz filter. Reducing rx bandwidth begins to help around 100 hz but its still noticeable. I believe this is caused by the transmitted cw waveform and the rise and fall times. My understanding is that this is also what causes key clicks but I'm not sure if thats what I'm hearing. To me, key clicks would extend further from the center than what I'm hearing. Is this what also causes faster cw to use more bandwidth? It is on all cw signals and not related to strength (although its usually wider with a stronger signal) or AGC settings (including off). Of course, on steady carriers I dont hear anything once the tone is gone. When listening to a TS570 its not nearly as noticeable BUT there are alot of other things going on like AGC pumping and images and just mushy audio in general. Its amazing to me how bad the 570 sounds after using the K3. Another part to this question: What does transmitted phase noise sound like on reception? I have read a lot of posts on phase noise but I have no idea what people are hearing. And maybe on a related topic I have also noticed SSB splatter much more with the K3. Is this also related to the K3 just being a cleaner receiver? None of these issues seem to be rx overload. I dont use NB, NR and always use the ATT on the lower bands. As I said before I have tried various AGC settings including agc off and backing off the rf gain with no real difference. Maybe I'm just now realizing what alot of you have been talking about... Poorly designed and/or improperly operated transmitters/amplifiers. If thats the case its an eye(ear)-opener for me! 73, Steve WA3A -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-CW-Reception-tp3928524p3928524.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 1800Khz Broadcast
Hi Steve, Are you sure it is WCER you are hearing? I am about 20 miles from Canton and I do not hear anything at all on 1800 Khz. However, I do hear their signal on 900 Khz S9 Plus. 73, John, KD8K Yes, I listened at 5pm to their ID. I can still hear them but much weaker at 10pm. It IS strange that you dont hear them on 1800 Khz. Re: [Elecraft] K3 1800Khz Broadcast
Yes this is indeed WCER in Canton, OH on 900 Khz. Canton is at least 100 miles from me. I cant even copy their signal on 900 Khz using a good portable radio or the K3 (but I notice the K3 attenuates signals in that range. I dont have the general coverage filter option.) Thanks for the comments! I will contact them. [Elecraft] K3 1800Khz Broadcast
Although the K3 is my only rig I forgot that I had a borrowed TS570 on the shelf. I checked and the signal is there using it also so this is not a K3 topic. I hoped it wasnt! But surely this station must be illegal. [Elecraft] K3 -AM Broadcast on 1800 Khz?
On my new K3 I hear a Christian broadcast station centered on 1800 Khz. I listened for awhile and Ohio was mentioned in the commercials several times. I live about 70 miles from Ohio and couldnt find the station anywhere else on my K3 after a quick search. I'm using a horizontal 160 meter loop antenna with no other indications of images or harmonics from broadcast signals. [Elecraft] K3 shutdown during high SWR
I had the chance to use a K3 during SS CW. I liked the rx and found it easy to remove most of the QRM. Something I'm not used to! Since I usually operate with antennas fed with open wire I have been accustomed to fine tuning an external antenna tuner during automated CQing. The first time I tried this the K3 shut down. I tried it again to be sure and it shut down again. Each time I powered it back up and it came on with a different freq and filter setting than I was using. It also shut down another time when I wasnt adjusting SWR but cant recall the exact cicumstance other than I was adjusting something on the RX during a CQ. I found many adjustments that couldnt be made while transmitting. Not a big deal but some of them caused the sidetone to disappear or be distorted. Not sure what the actual transmitted signal was doing. I can get used to not adjusting the rx during xmit but a shutdown is not acceptable during a contest. It seems that swr power foldback should alleviate a shutdown. Any thoughts? This wasnt at my station so I dont have much other information. I dont believe this is a power supply issue as I have used other rigs at this qth with the same power supply without incident. This K3 was using the latest firmware and is around serial #1700.
