Re: [Elecraft] KPA500...standby vs. operate

2019-10-27 Thread T.H. Bauer
Victor makes a good point. Although I no longer have pets, if I leave the
station (K3 + KPA500/KAT500) powered ON,
I place the KPA500 in Stby and the K3 into Test mode. That (hopefully)
ensures no errant transmissions while I am
away from the shack.
I have to admit that I have sometimes returned and forgotten to put the K3
back into Normal mode. Then I wonder
why there are no responses to my calls (!!). Iguess at 73 I'm entitled to a
few of those mistakes.

If you have a pet larger than a goldfish, you should probably put it
into standby. Unless your pet is licensed to transmit.

[Elecraft] re.: A First Class Company

2019-09-30 Thread T.H. Bauer
Neil,

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Each of the reflectors to which I belong
that has moved to groups.io is
much more pleasurable to use...particularly is you are like me and use
Digest mode (I feel the heat coming!).
And I eschew email clients because I get email via 4 different hardware
platforms: Mac OS, Win,Android,
and iOS. So, Yes, I use a Web "client", aka browser, on most of those
devices and it works quite well.

It's possible that moving to groups.io would make the Elecraft archive
difficult to transition; I don't know, but
that may be a consideration.

Yes indeed, Elecraft is a FIRST CLASS company.Unfortunately with a
third world country reflector (just my opinion)
Other reflectors use the user friendly IO service. QTH.Net is not user
friendly. I hope that they can switch to .IO. Why do I have this
opinion? It forces the user to scroll thru many messages that a user may
not have an interest in, and hunting to find those of interest. Using
the .IO all one needs to do is click on the item and it is there. Just
one "geezers" take on the issue.

I'm curious to learn if there are any among you who use this keyboard and
are also contesters? My operating space is rather tight, and I use a
compact Matias keyboard: Mini Tactile Pro.
I'm a so-so typist, and I'm rather fond of the tactile feedback I get from
the Matias, which seems to help improve my accuracy. How is the tactile
feedback from the TypeMatrix 2030?

Tnx for your feedback.

Re: [Elecraft] I wonder how many folks have had buyers remorse on a K3/K3S purchase?

2015-08-04 Thread T.H. Bauer
I sincerely doubt you will regret the purchase, Jer. I recently acquired a
used K3, pretty well stocked, from a friend who upgraded to the K3S. The Rx
section is better than most every other rig I have used, including the
legacy Flex radios and most Yaesu. In my case, where I have high
environmental noise levels, the K3 NB does better than what I had raved
about with my Flex'es. And it's NB is less prone to being pumped by nearby
strong signals. IF DX and contests are your thing, you will not regret the
expenditure.

You have options:

   1. Buy used, well equipped;
   2. Buy used, barebones, and add features as you see fit over time (this
   is a real bonus);
   3. Buy a new Kit with features you MUST have and add others later;
   4. Buy new, factory assembled with features you MUST have and add others
   later.

List *your* requirements to meet *your* operating needs and proceed from
there to decide what options NEED to be in your K3/K3S.

There are few rigs available that are modular, allowing us to add
capability as our needs/usage changes. And, Yes, it is a lot of radio in a
nice, compact package. And that was a MUST in my case. (Oh, and flash does
not contacts make!)

Just asking. It's a lot of money but appears to be a lot of radio. It's not
as flashy as some.

Just a lot to think about as I save up.
