I found, over the years, that LMP isn't a particularly good call sign for voice communiciation because it's hard to distinguish between the letters M and N, and between P and T, so I kept getting requests for repeats of my call during VHF contests, especially when it really was a weak signal contact. (Is that K6LNT?) N6LEW, on the other hand, doesn't contain any confusable letters. Plus, of course. it's my name. Every couple of years I have checked the FCC call sign database for availability. The former owner of N6LEW let his call sign drop several years ago, and after I learned that the FCC's two year waiting period had expired, I filed a request to re-issue it to me. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] wire antenna lengths for portable operations
Just to restate the obvious: Do not make the radials resonant on any of the operating frequencies. Doing so causes high current in the radials and you end up with a *very low *horizontally polarized radiator. 73, Tom (K7ZZ) On Fri, Jun 17, 2011 at 10:28 AM, Ron D'Eau Claire r...@cobi.biz wrote: John, as a general rule I try to get at least 1/4 wavelength of radiator up. That's not always practical but it's worth striving for since below 1/4 wavelength the feed point impedance and so the efficiency drops very quickly. If you are working against a counterpoise, something close to 1/2 wave is ideal since it raises the impedance is highest at the length. However, the impedance can easily rise above that which the tuner can match. An easy way to adjust the length of the antenna is to loop the wire through an insulator that is up as high as possible (at times I have used some monofilament fishing line with a loop through which the loop of lightweight antenna wire passed). Now, depending upon the amount of sag allowed, I can adjust the length by simply letting out or pulling in the radiator wire. The RF sees the folded back-wire as simply a thicker single wire since the RF field passes over wire, not through it. That adjustment is often enough to move the feed point impedance to something the tuner can handle. A 1/4 wavelength counterpoise is ideal since it minimizes the RF voltage at the rig. For that reason, it's good to avoid 1/2 wavelength counterpoise since that puts a voltage maximum at the rig. A random wire antenna like this with one counterpoise wire is really just an off center fed radiator. The counterpoise and radiator are one RF circuit. The advantage is you only need one elevated point. The disadvantage is that the counterpoise also radiates but it only warms the worms Hi! So, whenever possible I try to get both wires up into the air with at least a 90-degree angle between them (so the RF fields won't tend to cancel each other) even though one wire might be a lot longer than the other. I was thinking about using the KAT2 to tune a wire attached to the BL2 (at the 1:1 setting). Probably going to cut some teflon-coated wire this evening and pack it away in the bag. I'm seeking input on the best lengths of wire to cut for the active part of the antenna as well as the counterpoise. If you have any other comments on this setup, I'd love to hear them, too. In the past, I've used the K2 attached to my homebrew vertical (SGC SG-239 at the base of a elevated ground plane vertical), so this is my first adventure with random wire antennas. [Elecraft] 7QP
Tom, K7ZZ, and Jim, W7UG, will have a K3 high power multi-single County Line Expedition station on the air Saturday for the 7th Call Area QSO Party (1300 Z Sat. - 0700 Z Sun). They will be straddling the borders of semi-rare Crook (CRO) and Wheeler (WHE) counties in beautiful 70' high Ponderosa pine trees. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K-3] RTTY for Dummies
Has anyone got a *reallly simple* checklist for setting up the K-3 to run RTTY. I'll use MMTTY and I'll use AFSk and I will *not *use an outboard interface like Rigblaster, etc. I mean really simple as in Step 1: Turn on the radio. 73 de Tom (K7ZZ) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Salt Water Verticals
I've used vertically polarized antennas next to salt water for a number of trips with great results. If you can't get the antenna right next to the salt water ground plane, get it high enough that the vertical can see the salt water. Something that works extremely well is a *pair *of Sigma 5s. Feed one of them with 50 ohm coax and short the feed line on the second one so it becomes a parasitic reflector. Spacing isn't especially critical, and about nine feet works well as a compromise for 20 - 10 meters. Don't forget that the reflector needs to be switched also so that the reflector also stays resonant on the band selected. Total weight: about 14 pounds. No part is over two feet in length (i.e. it packs in a suitcase). About 8.5 dBi gain at that wonderful 10 degree take-off angle. 73 de Tom (K7ZZ) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 interface to HP Mini
Has anyone been successful with an audio interface between an HP Mini notebook and a K3? I have a TRRS splitter, but the microphone input side of it does work. Yes, the audio drivers are up to date. Yes, the Jack Mike is turned on. The real question is whether or not I'm using the correct plug for the splitter. It looks like the one that HP recommends and is common to an iPhone. If that's not correct where does one purchase the correct plug. 73 de Tom (K7ZZ) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Disgrunteled Japanese
Was talking with a JA operator yesterday who said that Elecraft is getting a very bad name in that country - not for their product, but because of a business decision to have everything go through an exclusive dealer for both sales and service. The problem (according to this operator) is that the exclusive dealer is jacking the price up by up to 50%. Yes, it is true that they can buy the product directly from Elecraft, but doing so puts you without access to any tech support. Don't know if this is the isolated case of a guy who doesn't have his facts straight and likes to spread rumors. We've got a few of them in this country also. But thought I'd pass this along. 73 de Tom (K7ZZ) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Software Upgrades
One of the problems with having a radio that is way smarter than I am is that things take an inordinate amount of time to accomplish what should be a simple task. I've just spent three hours downloading the latest beta software. I freely admit that all of the mistakes were mine: from trying to use the wrong COM port to discovering that the unzipped files had not been saved into my temporary beta folder. *But* it seems that the whole thing could have been avoided if someone had a simple bulletproof checklist that includes things like Turn on the K3 Does anyone have such an animal? 73 de Tom (K7ZZ) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
