RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 Mounting Problem
This issue is also impacted by how well the cover fits over the rcvr board. I had to fiddle with mine a bit and file off some misplaced nubs on the circuit board in order to get the top and bottom sheet metal parts to snap together properly. If the top cover isn't positioned correctly it will hold the screw head too high to mate with the stand-offs. The form, fit, and finish of the rest of the radio is close to perfect but that wrap around cover took a lot of extra care before I finally got mine to fit right. 73/Patrick W7TMT > -Original Message- > From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net > [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm > Sent: Monday, December 29, 2008 5:13 AM > To: Kenneth Lopez > Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 Mounting Problem > > Ken, > > Measure the standoffs mounted on the main board - they should > be 7/8 inch and must have two split lockwashers under them - > a total height above the board not quite an inch. RE: [Elecraft] K3: component location on circuit diagram
Assuming you're viewing the electronic version of the schematics with Adobe Reader the Search function is most helpful. Enter C2 in the Search field and then from the drop down box select "Whole Words Only" which prevents the search stopping on C214, C259 etc. In a matter of seconds "C2" was located as a 470 ufd cap. in the upper right-hand corner of Sheet 1 of 4 for the K3 RF board (Oct. version of the schematics) and C3 is adjacent. Best of the holidays to you and yours. 73/Patrick W7TMT _ From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of David Lankshear Sent: Wednesday, December 24, 2008 4:18 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3: component location on circuit diagram Happy Christmas, all. What better time than the final hours of Christmas Eve to apply the mod, recently described by Wayne, that prevents damage to the audio output chip if a mono jack is inadvertently plugged into ext. sp. instead of a stereo jack? Before commencing, I decided to locate C2 and C3, the two 470uF AF output coupling capacitors on the circuit diagram - and that's where I came off the rails. I can't find them! I know they are physically on the main RF board and sit between the AF amp on the DSP board and the KIO3, but scrutinising the maps has taken up a couple of hours, and I've become obsessed with finding them. Can anyone please help put me out of my misery?...pass the bottle, please! Season's Greetings to all and TIA. RE: [Elecraft] K3 VFO A tension
Well, I'll jump in here. I had the same problem a few months ago when I assembled S/N 1889. The VFO A knob was way too loose no matter what I did. I had followed the instructions and installed one (1) felt washer under both the VFO A and B knobs. The B knob was fine. The A knob couldn't be adjusted to my liking. Then I noticed I had an extra felt washer (i.e., a total of three were included in the package). I added the second washer and life is good. I have it setup so I can spin it and get a nice smooth run (maybe 6 or 8 turns) as it freewheels but yet for my taste it's not too loose. Like everything else of course it's all a matter of taste. Two washers worked for me. If it was an accident (they included too many) then it was fortuitous in my case. If by chance you have a third washer install it and life will be good. 73/Patrick W7TMT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Noisy fans?
I ran my K3 hard enough over the weekend to think about monitoring the PA temp. As I was CQing on Saturday when condx were el-stinko from where I am and responses were few and far between I watched the temp slowly rise until it got to 50C and then stabilize. Curious to see what the fans sounded like I took off the phones and couldn't hear the fans at all. I put my hand over the vents on top and could feel the air flow so I knew they were running but it wasn't until I put my head down close to the rig that I could hear them. Mine are very quite even when running at nearly full flow. Just my observations of course with S/N 1889. 73, Patrick, W7TMT > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Missouri Guy > Sent: Monday, December 08, 2008 9:31 PM > To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Noisy fans? > > I was trying to ferret out some weak signals on 160m when the > cooling fans switched on, making it very hard to hear over > the "whine" of the fans (or fan) even through the padding on > my headphones. > > Has anyone tried to quiet them down with vibration isolators, etc? > > Charlie, N0TT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. If you're not making mistakes and all tacks are "clear sailing" then you are obviously not living your life to the fullest. RE: [Elecraft] [K3] Switch Tone Volume
It works for me. I'm running firmware beta version MCU 2.63 - DSP 1.95. As I crank up the Monitor Level the Switch Tones get louder. (In other words I hold in the Mon/CMP/PWR knob until "MON" followed by its setting number appears and then adjust that setting level and the Switch Tones follow along.) If I reduce the Monitor Tone level to 0 (zero) the Switch Tones can't be heard. Seems to work for SN 1889. 73/Patrick W7TMT _ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Roy Morris Sent: Friday, November 07, 2008 8:49 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] Switch Tone Volume I would like to know how the MONitor level is used to change the switch tone volume. When I change the MON level there is no change. I have talked with another K3 owner who also says his MON control does not change his switch tone volume either. We are both using v 2.63 firmware. Maybe we are overlooking something. Please let me know if the switch tone volume can be changed, and if so, how. Presently it is low and not very audible. Thanks. RE: [Elecraft] What I REALLY already have
What I REALLY already have are four modern HF transceivers. One each from Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu and Elecraft and at the moment all are sitting here side-by-side with a switching set-up that allows me to do instant A/B/C/D comparisons. My first Elecraft radio is a K3. The K3 is simply the best radio I have ever owned. Am I a zealot? No, as I just said this is the first Elecraft product I have ever owned and I've had it for just two weeks. Can it get better? Yes it can. Perhaps what is most important is whether I have ever been offered the opportunity to chat with the designers/builders of the other radios as I did with Wayne in the last couple of days over an obscure feature I'd like to see (or any other feature/issue as far as that goes)? No never. Do any of them have an email list (which appears to be totally un-moderated) that THEY the manufacturer sponsors and supports so that I can provide my feedback and perhaps influence their direction or air my complaints. No never. There are other lists but they are all sponsored and run by the users not by the vendor. All the other vendors that I have given my money to have the "you bought it's your problem" attitude. My 2nd favorite radio is my 1KMP Yaesu. I was fortunate to buy a late model that Yaesu had (more or less) fixed the serious key click problems that these radios had for TEN+ YEARS. Despite serious feedback from the Ham community for a decade they just blew it off and only in the last two years of production managed to install a half-hearted fix for the problem. I should also note that the radio was only really good after I spent another $800 dollars on roofing/IF filters from another company as the stock factory stuff was garbage. No doubt my operating requirements and others are not the same. However, after nearly 50 years in the Amateur Radio Service I have never done business with any vendor who is as quality and customer focused as Elecraft. My very first purchase was simply the best dollars I have ever spent on equipment in my radio experience. Respectfully submitted with no ill will toward anyone. 73/Patrick W7TMT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
