Re: [Elecraft] K2: Is Inventory really a necessity?

2010-07-17 Thread Gregg Lengling, W9DHI
Actually it's more than an inventoryit allows you to separate items
into containers for easy finding. But even more important is that you
are able to identify all the various pieces, as it's very easy to
confuse one choke for another, or one capacitor for another. It's not
inventory for inventory's sake...it's actually a pure building step in
familiarizing yourself will all the parts.

[Elecraft] GB stations get 7100 to 7200

2004-10-27 Thread W9DHI
UK Amateurs Gain 7.1 - 7.2MHz from 31 October
Ofcom and the Radio Society of Great Britain are pleased to announce that
all necessary procedures required for early access to the 7.1 to 7.2MHz
spectrum for all UK radio amateurs have been finalised and that access is
allowed from 0100UTC on Sunday 31 October 2004. Early access is granted on a
Secondary (non-interference) basis using a maximum of 26dBW (400 watts) PEP.

Notices of Variation for the Foundation, Intermediate and Full licences have
been published on the Ofcom website.
orse code modes are used between 7.1 and 7.2MHz. B
It is recommended that for the time being only voice and Mand planning
issues on 7MHz will be kept under regular review and will be dependent on
the number of administrations granting early access to this band prior to
full Primary access on 29 March 2009.

The RSGB would like to offer its appreciation to all parties involved in the
consultations, in particular the broadcasting industry, the UK Ministry of
Defence, the Radiocommunications Agency and its successor Ofcom.

Please note that access to the extra 100kHz is only allowed from 0100UTC,
and not midnight UTC, on Sunday morning. Or, put another way, from 2.00am
local time, at which time the clocks are put back by one hour. Local time
will then be 1.00am, the same as GMT or UTC.

This information is available to all members of the RSGB and was posted
today on the members only portion of their website. By the way, RSGB is a
great organization, I'm a member and have donated to their foundation.
Their monthly magazine is fantastic and is worth the cost of membership.

I would be interested if you were to post the URL to this
announcement. I've searched OfCom's site, and there is no trace of
this supposed notification that I can find.

[Elecraft] Kat100/Kpa100 in EC2

2004-10-11 Thread W9DHI
I just finished building a KAT100 and KPA100 in an EC2 for a friend. This
is perhaps the best way to go if you still enjoy taking your QRP K2 out into
the field. Bill's K2 has the KAT1 and KIO2 in the basic radio. Now when
it's on the home base, just 2 connections and it's running QRO with a QRO
tuner. Nothing to mess with and what's really neat is that the K2
recognizes now that the KAT100 is hooked up and puts the KAT1 into a
PassThru mode (basically the POUT mode).

Wish I would have done this a couple years ago when I built mine. It has
got to be the best thing since sliced bread.

I took pictures thru the whole building process to document this build and
it's nice to see it come together again and again on the computer. In the
next couple days I'll post the pics to some webspace and put a link to the
pics here.

RE: [Elecraft] Audio levels in K2

2004-10-10 Thread W9DHI
We've been over this topic many times. If you go thru the reflector
archives you find that most of the low audio problems are caused by
improperly setting the AGC during alignment. A quick test is to shut off
the AGC by pressing PRE/ATT and AGC together. If the volume comes shooting
up the AGC is set wrong and is way too aggressive.

 Hello All,

I was chasing DX on the low end of 10m yesterday (good paths to VK!)
and noted that even with phones on, I had the AF gain all the way up...and
 could
 use more.

Perhaps this was due to the headphones I was using, but I wonder if others
have noted the same thing. I think this is the only rig I've got that does
not have enough AF gain to blast me out of the phones.

On vy strong sigs, I don't need the gain, but on the very weak ones,
 I could use more.

 Thanks for your insight

[Elecraft] BBC and Ham Radio in the spotlight

2004-09-08 Thread W9DHI
Amateur Radio Features on BBC Radio and TV
This has been a week where amateur radio has received some good publicity in
the mass broadcast media. Firstly, 'Unsung Heroes', broadcast by BBC Radio 4
on Saturday 4 September, was the story of the radio amateurs who provided
vital communications when the World Trade Centre was attacked in New York on
9/11. The programme interviewed several amateurs who responded, and they
told what they did on that fateful day. The programme highlighted the great
advantages to a country of having an emergency amateur radio organisation.
The American radio amateurs' actions were described as quietly
professional and life-saving and the amateurs were described as
public-spirited heroes.

Later in the week was a piece on the 'In Touch' programme about young blind
Foundation licensees. As with 'Unsung Heroes', this was a wholly
complimentary piece which treated amateur radio most sympathetically.

You can listen to both of these programmes on the Internet. Go to bbc.co.uk
and follow the Listen to shows you've missed links.

RE: [Elecraft] Transverter question

2004-08-21 Thread W9DHI
Just a thankyou to the many responses I got on the subject line. After
looking at the input circuit to the xverter and the attenuator section we
decided that 9 to 10 watts would probably be within limits. It turns out we
were correct. With 5 feet of RG58 style cable we drove the XV222 to 18
watts out and everything was working perfectly and normally. We then went
ahead and fed the Henry Amp and now have 120 watts out in time for the VHF
contest. I think Todd is very happy.

Now after actually playing with one of the XV's I've got to say it is an
excellent unit. The receive sensitivity is phenomenal (at 222.100 it is .04
for 12dB SINAD in the FM mode and in CW/SSB I had to attenuators to the
output of my service monitor to try to check it out and the service monitor
goes down to .02uV. Great unit, now I know what I want for Christmas.a
6meter and 2meter Elecraft XV units.(would someone tell my wife).

73 and thanks to all, again this reflector is a source of uncommon
knowledge.

[Elecraft] Capacitors

2004-08-19 Thread W9DHI

A couple months ago someone asked about different capacitors and their use
in the Elecraft products. I think this all started when someone was doing a
mod or upgrade and wanted to know if a certain type of capacitor he had in
his junk box would work. There were numerous responses but this months
issue of RadCom (RSGB Magazine), there is an excellent article on the actual
make up and construction of various types of capacitors and their reasons
and uses. If you don't get RadCom definitely find someone who does and read
this article.

RadCom is an excellent Amateur Radio Magazine and I cherish it ton's more
than my QST each month.

I'm partial to the Stock Knob with a finger dimple, I've also played with a

fine tuning.

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 Multiple Birdies Suddenly Appeared. Help!

Hi Guys:

I had my K2 (S/N 2528) opened up to replace the thermal pads on Q7 and Q8.
This was in the aftermath of installing the KPA100 option. Everything
worked fine for a few weeks after installing the KPA100, but I needed to
change out the pads as the old ones had gotten threadbare. I am pretty
sure I didn't have this problem before I did that, but I am not 100%
positive.

Suddenly, I have birdies all over the place, on almost every band, and
spaced out across the bands. The birdie is clearly associated with the KIO2
interface that is part of the KPA100. When I unplug the digital cable
either from the PC or from the back of the K-2, the birdies disappear.
However, I still have the birdies even if I shut down the PC, another PC in
the shack, and both monitors. I have them when I move to battery power. I
have tried shutting down everything in the area, with no change.

I tried placing rf suppressing toroids and split rings on the line to the PC
with no effect. I have changed COM ports with no success. Unplugging the
KAT100 makes no difference.

The birdies are at times steady and at times pulsating --- whoop whoop whoop
--- about 2 per second. The pattern can change based on what I am doing on
the PC. But, the birdies are there with the PC totally shut down, monitor
as well. It acts like the KIO2 (the one that is built into the KPA100 is
generating it's own oscillations, but only with the control cable connected.

The configuration of my K2:

KPA100
KAT100
KNB2
KDSP2
K160RX
K60XV

Any thoughts much appreciated. Thanks.
