Re: [Elecraft] K3 cheap mic
I keep the headset plugged into the rear mic and headphone jack. In the menu, I set SPKR+PH to Yes. I'm using an amplified speaker system which has it's own volume control. When using the headset, I simply turn down the speake volume. I use a foot switch plugged into the PTT jack on the rear of the K3. A couple of days ago, I discovered a very cool way to mute my speakers while using a headset. This is accomplished simply by tapping the M3 key. The reason this works is that certain menu functions with yes/no or on/off parameters will cycle between their yes/no or on/off states simply by invoking them with a memory key. M1-M4 are handy because all you need do is tap them once the memory is set. Here's what you do: 1. Dial up the SPKR+PH item in config. 2. Now, HOLD one of the memory keys, M1-4, to memorize that menu function. 3. Now, whenever you tap the same M key, SPKR+PH will cycle between yes/no. Your speakers will mute and unmute simply by tapping the M key. You can do the same with th PF1/PF2 keys but the key must be held down for a moment accomplish the same result. Enjoy. 73, Bill, WA4KBD K3/100 #0224 -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3-cheap-mic-tp17169142p17170556.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3: One year and many thanks
Next week is an anniversary of sorts. It will have been a year since I first put my hands on a K3 at Dayton. N6KR was pretty busy at the Elecraft booth but I did have an opportunity to tell Wayne that I considered the K3 a risk-free investment. Only a couple of weeks prior, on May 5, 2007, I had given Elecraft my 50 percent deposit. I haven't been disappointed. This past year has produced some of the best fun I've ever had in 46 years on the air. The Elecraft reflector, for one thing, has been a total riot! I'll clamber out of bed before the break of day to read what has become a global seance on everything from the K3 to the nuances of radio station grounding. I'll laugh. I'll wince. I'll shake my head in amazement at the level of expertise that's so apparent in many posts. Beyond that, the colorful tapestry of personality and opinion, unfolding as it does in real time, highlights the best that ham radio and the Internet have to offer. Most of the time :) For me, the K3 represents a kind of hardware platform upon which the envelope of HF performance / features can be explored and expanded via software. Being even a small part of the dynamic, collaborative evolution of the K3 is at least half the fun. The other half arises from the sheer pleasure of operating a radio at the top of the competitive heap. The conduit for all this enjoyment is the corporate culture at Elecraft - sometimes referred to as The Mojo - which allows each of us to feel as though we are somehow part of the company. That's leadership, pure and simple, and I'm grateful for it. The usual disclaimers apply. The personality, feel and capabilities of the K3 will mature over time, but hopefully it will be a long while before this radio is considered a finished product. Meanwhile, I'm just having way too much fun. Hope to see ya'll in Dayton. And many thanks. 73, Bill, WA4KBD K3 #0224 K2/100 #5473 -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3%3A-One-year-and-many-thanks-tp17156641p17156641.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3/100 peak vs average RF power output tests
After reading several posts expressing concern about low K3 RF power output, I decided to run some tests on my own K3. Equipment used: K3/100 #0224 (2.7khz stock filter) with current MCU and DSP firmware (1.78 / 1.58); Telepost LP-100 digital vector wattmeter; Telepost LP-200 dummy load wattmeter; MFJ-872 peak/average wattmeter; Daiwa CN620B wattmeter (average reading); Elecraft 2T-gen; high quality non-reactive RF dummy load. No antennas. K3 ATU bypassed. The K3 was set to request 100 watts output on 14.250 Mhz USB. The 2T-gen was connected to the front mic input and mic gain adjusted to a value of 20. This resulted in 5 bars of ALC. Compression was set to an arbitrary (and low) value of 10. Results, LP-100 wattmeter: peak power measured 97.6 watts (averaged over 5 measurements). Set to measure average power, the LP-100 repeatedly measured about 60 watts output. Results, LP-200 dummy load wattmeter: 99-100 peak watts reported over 5 measurments. Results, MFJ-872 Peak/Average wattmeter: 'Peak' reading on analog scale - 85 watts. 'Average' reading on analog scale - 55 watts. Results, Daiwa CN620B average-reading wattmeter: 40 watts per analog scale. While the LP-100 and 200 were in close agreement, keep in mind that I calibrated them myself against a nominal 25 RF peak watts as determined by an accurate oscilloscope. The other two instruments reported somewhat disparate power values compared to the LP-100/200 and one another. I'm not drawing any definite conclusions from these results; I'm simply reporting them out in the event some readers might find them helpful or interesting. 73, Bill, WA4KBD -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3-100-peak-vs-average-RF-power-output-tests-tp16996450p16996450.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
