Re: [Elecraft] OT--A Suggestion About Printers

2009-12-07 Thread wham727

Most of us get a little hot under the collar when you we learn the truth about
inkjet printers. The time I researched it, inkjet ink costs about $3000-$5000
a gallon at the retail prices.

The printer manufacturers have used the "Gillette" model for several years now.

Not only do they charge outrageous ink prices, they also make sure they get
their money by embedding page counters in their printers or ink cartridges.
Usually this takes the form of an embedded chip.
You may have 30% more ink when you get the out of ink warning. Inkjets are the
most expensive type of printing you can do. The “Gillette model” assures them
a steady revenue stream for as long as you own the printer.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Macro control of AH-4 remote tuner (and otherprojects).

2009-10-29 Thread wham727

Funny, I guess many of us have had a remote waterproof balanced/unbalenced
tuner on our wish list. Currently, I use a AH-4 and tune it with a Icom radio
on the desk and then manually switch the coax to all Elecraft gear, K1, KX1, K2
and K3. I use the Icom rig as a remote tuner activator for Elecraft rigs.

Lets start our pre orders now :)

YES indeed! I'm currently using a remote CG-3000 on my multiband vertical,
ut would MUCH rather have an Elecraft tuner that interfaced with the K3. I
ove the internal Elecraft tuners and believe it is time for them to start
hinking "outside the box" ;>)

Re: [Elecraft] how to bypass atu?

2006-08-30 Thread WHam727
As usual Don has provided the correct direct answer to your question.
However, I'm wondering if it would not be desirable to keep the tuner in the
path
to the amplifier. I believe it will assure a measure of additional filtering
for spur suppression and match the amplifier input exactly. Just a thought.
I don't think there is a down side to keeping the tuner in the circuit.

[Elecraft] K3 CW CQ-WW impressions

2007-11-24 Thread WHam727
In response to requests for K3 owners to post their impressions: It is
summed up in word word, WOW!!!

It's all about the reciever. I have three filters, the standard 5 pole 2.7,
the 5 pole 500HZ and the 8 pole 250HZ. You can manually select the filters
or just turn the width control. These filters along with the ability to
"shift" seems to really work well with crowded band conditions like in this
contest.

Frankly, there were many pile-ups that my 5W just won't bust but I could sure
hear well. There were many JA's just at the noise level but solid. I only
managed one JA QSO.I like the built in audio equilizer. I have adjusted
the RX audio to compensate for hearing loss at certain high frequencies I
attribute to working on radios in B-52's in my youth.;-) Ever hear of a HF
radio called an ARC-65, UHF ARC-34?

I have not uploaded V1.42 of the firmware yet as I like the NR and it is
disabled in this new release. The NR seems to work well in V1.41. Speaking of
firmware and downloads, I have Vista, Mac 10.5 (Leopard) and Windows 2000. The
down loader works very well on the 2000 with a real serial port. I gave up
on the USB adapter and Vista after an hour of Vistaville. On the 2000 it took
five minutes from download too upgrade. The release shipped in my radio was
1.31 on November 12. So firmware releases come about one a day including
the long weekend :). On Friday 1.41 was the latest release.

On the transmit side, the QSK works very well correcting a minor glitch I
never liked with the K2. The frequency memory features allow easy storing and
retrieving of frequencies (for those pile ups you just can't bust but may want
to return to). The CW memory is easy to set and responsive. It may be me
but I think built in keyer may eat a first dit occasionally. I switched to an
external keyer more to my liking and taste. The transmit display tells
everything I want to know, SWR, PWR and transmit and received frequency. I
really like the display and VFO readout operating with split frequency is a
snap.
I really like the ease of use. I have used the CW auto tune feature and
really like that on CW.The CWT feature gives a visual reference on his beat
note compared to what you have set. Very handy in contests when the called
station has his front end locked down to a few HZ and has filter skirts like El
Capatian.

K3# 69 has been working CQ-WW with 5W and a very modest Mini-33 on a roof top
tower @35'. Q's on 20, 15 and 10. My wire on 40 is down at the moment.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Low pitch CW-- how low does it go?

2007-11-30 Thread WHam727
The pitch is now available down to 300HZ in 50 HZ increments (and up to
1000HZ). For my taste, I like 500HZ, 400HZ makes the internal speaker buzz,
350
and below clears that up. I guess 400HZ makes those little insulating washers
dance :0 or perhaps I took the warning too serious and should of tightened
the nuts another quarter turn. There is a warning not to bend the speaker
frame when assembling the internal speaker. The external speaker I use
doesn't
mind 400HZ.

I have the latest firmware loads. Eric/Wayne would need to respond to
futures.

When I tune the K3, the P3 display is jerky and jumpy. Is this normal?
s there a parameter that affects this?

[Elecraft] KPA500- are you ready for your close-up?

2011-01-26 Thread wham727

I think now I would be a good time repost a link to some photographs I took at
HamCom 2010 where Eric had "their new baby" on display.
You have viewed the photograph almost 900 times so there is some interest :)
The production model may not resemble this display, but I bet it will be close.

I have visualized the KPA500 beside my K3, P3 and have begun the decision
process on what must go to make room. The ICom rig is looking vulnerable.
