[Elecraft] Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 30, Issue 5 New Transverters
Yes, I meant transverters from Elecraft!! While other tranverters (from a diversity of companies) are now offered even up approaching the millimeter wavelength bands, no one offers a nice neat commonality of an "IF" radio package, with a NO BAND GAP for band set-up for all of our 26 bands. While I would not expect Elecraft {or any other manufacturer} to take up this mantel in one swell foop, it would be quite an incentive to buy Elecraft! A 902 MHz band transverter would of course be the hot ticket for this point in time, but other bands might be added in a timely manner, and perhaps even be easier as the SHF bands were approached. Frequency stability would be the watch-word at these shorter wavelengths, so a somewhat different scheme might be addressed up above say 2.3 GHz. 73! de John WA6BFH DM15ej ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. It certainly sounds as if your more recent plans represent a rather different vector of concept, than those presented by your near vertical incident 3/100ths wavelength high loop. I think that if you pick a DX band, say 20, 17, or 10 Meters, and make one or more ¼ wavelength whip antennas from copper tubing (16.5 feet at 20 Meters) you will find that the antenna will be very efficient, and soon disappear as the copper tarnishes! ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 18, Issue 7 Low Angle Radiation Pattern Antennas
Your thought for the broadside/endfire array sounds like a good idea! On the other hand, I am always amazed at the amount of credence that is given to antenna modeling programs. Unless you know all of the factors and conditions of the surrounding area and environment of the antenna, these programs simply don’t work. Even at the relatively short wavelength of 20 Meters, what conductive, resistive, and capacitive objects will be within ¼ wavelength. You will have your house and outbuildings, other folks nearby homes and buildings, probably surrounding wires or plumbing within the house etc. Antennas for the UHF bands often present anomalies that are seen on otherwise barren test ranges. So if these things occur at a wavelength of 1 Meter, what do you think the environment looks like at 10 or 20 Meter wavelength? I’m sure that your new location is not so far out in the boonies that you will find it impossible to engineer your station to be able to communicate on 20 Meters etc. A good sensitive and selective receiver, along with a transmitter of adequate power, and your best antenna design ideas for your situation ought to work Ok! 73! de John ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I was not going to comment on this issue on such a forum, but the last most recent question and similar that I have seen on other Ham radio web forums prompts me to. We should be more concerned with the technical standards, conceptual knowledge of Ham’s on matters of electronics and radio physics, and not at all about a motor-memory skill. As a matter of choice iCW is fine for those that enjoy it, or might use it in light of its ability to provide as high as a 16 dB signal advantage over some other modes. That is how I use it, and when I do am comfortable between 16 to about 23 words per minute. We should be innovators of technology, which is our history and charter. Read FCC 97.1, particularly parts B, C, D. Worry less about iCW, it will survive on its own. [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 16, Issue 31 -- Toroid Use and History
What is the theory, or greater breadth of physics about toroid transformers? When did they come about, and what was the logic in replacing “C” or “E” frames (for non-RF applications). I had an old Uti-Com Communications radio that used a toroid switcher, and many other aspects of the radio were of quite modern design for its time frame. It even used a strip-line of 6360’s as buffer/multipliers, one as the driver, and two as the final. I saw a transformer design once for an “intrinsically safe” isolator for “DC ” analog lines, and the toroids used in this “phased switcher/rectifier” were covered with ferrite covers. I also seem to remember that design in the Western Electric 247B tone decoder. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 14, Issue 19 --- S-meter & S-units
One very important consideration of the use of “S-meters”, and “S-units” is remembering that signals are heard as a “Square Law Function” Every time you double or lengthen the communications path by twice the distance, the signal has fallen to one-fourth, or a 6 dB change! It is good to know how many dB per S-unit your receiver‘s meter indicates. This will probably not be a linear consideration -- and don’t believe the old wives tale about 6 dB’s per S-unit. It is the rare radio indeed where that is true! Even better than using “S-units”, give other stations reports in (ACCURATE) dBm! You will need the use of a calibrated signal generator to assess your receiver. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I have never understood “the thinking” with many Ham’s when the discussion of Dummy Loads comes up. Some Ham’s will tell you, the minute they hear you tune up on a frequency that you just made a QRL inquiry on, “GET A DUMMY LOAD, WHAT ARE YOU TUNING UP ON THE AIR FOR”! Well, what if my antenna represents several hundred Ohms on one wavelength, and only several Ohms on another? I have a Bird Model 43 Wattmeter, and a Bird Dummy Load. From a “DC” perspective, it measures 50.0 Ohms. From and “AC” stand point it also measures 50.0 Ohms from 1.8 MHz to 902 MHz. It has very little error even at 1300 MHz. That is a good thing, because I depend upon it for real work, like assessing line losses etc! ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 13, Issue 27 Balanced Automatic Tuners
Balanced Line Tuners I don’t think you really want an Automatic tuner from Elecraft -- unless they perhaps decide to venture into a new nitch in terms of a superb KW tuner that works well with their and other radios. First the reason that I say KW TransMatch is that you have to think in terms of at least 100 Watt power levels of the K2100 and most other transmitters of our day. If you are going to tune out what may well be a 10:1 or even greater reactance at 100 Watts, that could be thousands of volts. The tuner design must accommodate this. I would welcome seeing Elecraft or any manufacturer produce a software driven ‘truly balanced tuner’. Nothing like this now exists on the market. There are and have been some such unbalanced tuners that will match an antenna in the middle hundreds of Ohms. Even these won’t go beyond 600 or 800 Ohms, and that is simply not enough for a well engineered station. A software {or firmware} driven TransMatch that would tune from about one half Ohm, to about 2000 Ohms, and handle the reactive voltages that may be imposed at considerably higher power levels would be quite intriguing! 73! de John WA6BFH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Be cautious with the “Swing Arm Magnifiers” (or even visor magnifiers)! I build a lot of proto-types, so I am not only soldering, but also doing a board layout (as well as possible) at the same time (on the fly). This makes for a lot of concentration and ‘focus’ (HiHi)! As my eyesight gets poorer (and older -- life begins at 40 my ass!) I find that the instantaneous puff of rosin smoke at each solder pad connection makes my eyes instantaneously re-focus. This repeated and magnified change of eye focus can give you some awful and whopping head aches! I have best mitigated this problem by controlling the speed and direction of a ventilating fan. This way, I’m not breathing lead and solder fumes, and I can minimize the puff of smoke eye focus problem! 73! de John PS For the chap in Fresno -- visit M2 Antennas! I am surprised, and somewhat disillusioned to hear ‘questioning voices’ along the lines of modifying the K2 radio design! I do believe there is even a portion of the company’s main page where they recommend the radio, just because SINCE YOU BUILT IT, you will be well acquainted to improve upon its design! Anyone that has ever designed any circuit device knows that there is always Revision A, Revision B, revision C etc. This is true of simple “DC” circuits, and is more likely with “AC” circuits. Besides, it has already come to the fore that there are certain design deficiencies! I don’t fault the manufacturers for this, its simply bound to happen! So, fire up the soldering irons guys.
