[Elecraft] K2 LCD dsisplay problem?

2020-11-21 Thread Barry Middleton via Elecraft
Good morning, I would like some help in resolving a problem with my K2.
The rig is receiving and transmitting

with no problem, but the indicator for LSB, USB, CW etc is not working.
I am able to change mode ok but have to rely

on my ears to tell me witch mode I am on. On the display I see one
vertical bar, press mode button mode changes

and the display shows two vertical bars. Is this a display fault or
should I look somewhere else?

Thanking you in advance, and my best wishes to all on this
reflector,

[Elecraft] KX3 failure of speaker in KX3 #27**

2019-06-10 Thread Barry Middleton via Elecraft

Good Morning,

I would like some help or advice to solve
my KX3 speaker problem.

My problem is that the speaker is silent, headphones work ok, as a
workaround I am

using a powered speaker. Looking at the circuit for the audio output I
feel that the

headphone socket is not switching back to the speaker, the speaker is ok.

Due to my fingers not being as nimble as they used to be I feel that I
should get someone

else to do the repairs, maybe the UK agent.

    Thanking you in advance,

            Barry G4DBS

[Elecraft] [eelcraft] KX3 Low Volume

2018-02-23 Thread Barry Middleton via Elecraft
I have been using  a Jabra powered speaker for some time now with no
problems. They have a built in battery chargeable via a mini USB socket,
also

have blue tooth connectivity if required. They measure 5 inches wide,
2.3 inches high and 2.1 inches deep, so small enough to slip into a pocket

if you are going portable in the field. I purchased mine when the built
in speaker of my KX3 stopped working, the speaker is ok, I suspect it is

the headphone socket failure. I don't know if these speakers are
available in the USA but I would think so.

[Elecraft] [elecraft] KXPA100 KXATU PX3

2016-04-25 Thread Barry Middleton
At long last I have got round to assembling my KXPA100, KX3ATU and the
PX3. The only slight problem that I had was with the PX3 as 79 year old
fingers don't work as good as they use to. However after a thorough
check to make sure all was correct, I connected it all up, power on and
all worked fine. I would like to thank the Elecraft team for a firt
class product and the help that is available on this reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] FTDI to serial adapter for K3 with Windows 7

2015-11-14 Thread Barry Middleton
I use Windows XP Home on the shack computer and have the same effect on
boot up, I do not onw a K3 but it cycles the PTT on my Elecraft K2 &
KX3, also my Icom IC7000. As a matter of interest and out of curiosity I
have just booted up my Raspberry Pi 2 system and it does not activate
the PTT. As there has been no mention of other operating systems I
presume it is a Windows only effect. May I wish everyone on this list a
very happy Christmas especially Eric, Wayne and all at elecraft,

My Win7 Ultimate has done this forever. Simple solution:

1. Turn on the computer.

2. Turn on the radio.

[Elecraft] KX3 2metre module installation

2014-10-22 Thread Barry Middleton

Hello,
Just have to say that the installation of the 2 metre module
in my KX3 went very smoothly, even these 78 year old hands managed the
mini co-ax connectors. However when it came to upgrading the firmware I
had a small problem, the MCU 2.23 installed with no problem, but Mr
Murphy stepped in on the DSP 1.30, in the middle of loading I suffered a
power cut, it didn't like that one bit. Still after the power returned
all went smoothly. The sensitivity is far better than my other 2 metre
rigs, so thank you Elecraft for a first class product.

[Elecraft] 4 metre module (70 Mhz) module possible for the KX3

2014-05-09 Thread Barry Middleton

Hello Wayne,
Thank you for the information on the 2 metre
module for the KX3, I will be ordering one on Friday 16th. I would also
be interested in a 4 Metre module as that band is getting very popular
in region1. Just an idea Wayne, would it be possible to have it mounted
in a seperate enclosure, so as to avoid opening up the KX3 to change
bands. Just my thoughts and I realise it may not be possible for
technical reasons. May I wish you and all at Elecraft a sucessful time
at Dayton.

Hi all,

We'll be taking orders for the KX3-2M module, at Dayton and via the web,
starting next Friday, May 16th. (Please don't call Elecraft about this yet --
we won't be set up to take orders until then.)

Meanwhile, we're thinking about doing a 4-meter version. 4 meters is not
available in the U.S., yet, but it is available in many countries in ITU region
1 (Europe, Africa, Middle East, etc.). For details, see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4-meter_band.

A KX3-4M would be identical to the 2-meter version, with about 3 watts output,
a very low noise figure, and all-mode operation. It would use the same PCB,
requiring only component changes. Unfortunately there isn't room for both 2-
and 4-meters on one module.

Any interest in a KX3-4M?

73,
Wayne

Hi all,

Does anyone know how accurate is the clock on KX3? The reason I ask is
because I activated a local SOTA peak last weekend and did another peak
this weekend. After setting the clock accurately last weekend, I did
not think about checking it this weekend but half way through this
weekend's activation I noticed my UTC time setting was 1hr and 17 mins
off! While it was easy enough to correct the log, is the clock expected
to drift this much in a week?

I wonder how easy/hard it would be to have the radio poll 10Mhz (like the
atomic clocks do) every so often when powered on, to keep the time more
accurately. That would be a pretty cool feature.

Hello Paul,
I do not know if this any help to you, I live 4 miles
S.E. of the City of Lincoln and about 5 miles from the 2 Kilowatt medium
wave transmitters of BBC Radio Lincolnshire. The Station uses 2 phased
vertical antennas, I have not noticed any BC break through on my KX3 fed
by a 80ft doublet antenna, I hope that you and others find a cure to the

After being QRT for a number of years I'm returning to the air with a new
call and location. I am seriously considering buying a KX3 (I have a K2 and
a K1), but I'm a little concerned by reports of AM breakthrough (or whatever
the right word is). I know this is because of the direct conversion
architecture of the rig. I also understand that the IK can be shifted to
8KHz, which should solve the problem, but in doing so makes the narrower
roofing filters and dual watch inoperable.

How many owners are having problems with AM BC breakthrough. I guess it's
mainly an EU problem. I'm located in Dublin, EI.

[Elecraft] K2/100 #6459 alive and well

2011-06-05 Thread Barry Middleton
I would like to thank Gary and Richard for all the help that they gave
me in trying to sort out a distorted audio problem on transmit that I
had with my K2/100. I did not seem to be able to resolve the problem, so
looking at the list on Elecraft's Website of Hams in the UK that might
be able to help me I contacted Dave G3TJP. He said he was willing to
have a look at it for me so I took it to him, to cut a long story short
Dave found several problems and was able to sort them out for me. There
is one outstanding fault but it is not affecting it's operation, that is
I have lost the voltage/current measurement caused by a damaged MCU on
the control board also CP U3. I will replace these items at a later date
to bring it up to full spec. So thank you Gary, Richard and Dave and any
others I have forgotten for all the help. I know of no other Amateur
Radio manufacturer who offers such a first class support and help
service to their customers.

[Elecraft] K2/100 Distortion on 80M

2010-05-30 Thread Barry Middleton
I would like some help please, I have a K2/100 Ser# 6459 which is
transmitting distorted audio on 80 metres only at all power levels, also
the volume level of the transmitted audio as monitored on another
receiver varies in a random manner. These tests were carried out using a
dummy load with only the PSU and dummy load connected. Would I be right
in thinking I may have a bad soldered lead on the 80m band pass filters
that could cause this problem or should I look somewhere else. I build
this K2/100 myself.

Thank you for any help you can give me,

Re: [Elecraft] Slightly OT K2 sales targeted

2010-05-12 Thread Barry Middleton
Here in the UK we have a breakfast cereal called Special K, after
watching a television programme I found out that it was also the name of
a controlled substance i.e. a prohibited drug. I feel sorry for the
people at Elecraft, all K2's shipped confiscated. Maybe they will have
to call it the K1.1 Hi.

[Elecraft] Re K2 New builder

2010-03-14 Thread Barry Middleton
Hello George,
If it is of any help to you when I built my
two K2's I used a foam rubber pad to mount all the passive components
i.e. the capacitors, chokes and the loose resistors. I also used
conductive foam for the transistors etc. I did this for each board and
in the value order they were to be mounted on the PCB. I found that this
also helped to prevent components going missing as some of the caps are
very small.

Enjoy the building of your K2 and using one of the finest rigs on
the market for the price, more joy for less dollars Hi.

 This happens using N1MM logger V9.10.3 and K3 V3.6.3. I don't have any
serial snooper tools handy so I can't give the exact RS232 command sequence,
but it appears as if N1MM tries to turn off RIT/XIT on band change. To

Had the same thing happen after installing the new Google Earth today. I

 problem. 73 de Brian/K3KO N1IX wrote:

[Elecraft] Re K2 I/O problem

2008-11-27 Thread Barry Middleton

Hi Rolf,
I have had this problem about a week ago, my K2/100 would
not talk to HRD or K2 Remote. I checked all cables etc no problems
there. However I found that I had lost the side tone on cw, I then
discovered that the K2 had somehow reset the U8-4 source to the default
U6-25 setting. After re-setting it to the correct U8-4 source every
thing worked again with HRD and K2 remote.

Hope this is of some help to you
