[Elecraft] Thank you Elecraft
Hello All: Just to let you know K2, s/n 6301 is now complete! Final Tuning of filters and Antenna Tuner to be completed this week, when my elmer returns from Orlando. It will be several weeks for me to put up a G5RV and perfect my cw. But I hope to be on the air by March 10. Over the past several months while building my radio, I have read this forum daily. I want you all to know that the support I received from everyone at elecraft and the torroid guy was fantastic. Scott, at elecraft got to know me, well but no mattar how silly my question, I had the help I needed. Coupled with the advice on this forum, I was able to build my K2 and it was my first build. Thank you to all and Thank you to Elecraft for putting out a product that a nontechnical newbie can build. Now I just have to learn how to use it! [Elecraft] Cover for K2
I just received my cover, ordered from Rose and Ken Kopp and want to let everyone know that not only was it beautifully constructed but it fits like a glove. I especially like the way the back is made to go over cables, etc. since it sits in a permanent spot on my desk. My xyl appreciates that it was made in the colors of our Trailer. Tnx for a beautiful product and for the quick delivery of same. Re: [Elecraft] L34 on K2 tuning question?
Eddy Avila wrote: Changes while tuning L34 on my K2 are very subtle. Just barely hear L34 peak with the slug near the top of the canis this normal? I'm just trying to determine if the receiver on my K2 is working as it should. I went through the same thing just today. We also used a spectogram but after failing to hear an apreciable change we followed the next suggestion, alligning the 40-meter band pass filter. Once this was aligned we were able to tune L-34 by ear. It did indeed occur near the top of the can, as stated in the text. Once done everything tested ok! Re: [Elecraft] K2 #6358 Build Begins
Hello Tony: I am a little ahead of you, just getting ready to go through the second set of testing and tuning the receiver. I second what the others have said about using a visor with several interchangeable magnifying lenses. Also make sure that you match parts to their pictures and don't be hesitant of calling the guys and girls at Elecraft, when a part does not quite match. Turns out that certain parts have changed appearances by color or shape. But they are great and reply quite quickly. Finally someone there gave two other tips. 1) work on a raised platform, so that the parts are at eyelevel when using magnification or lower your chair to accomplish the same idea, saves on the back pain! and 2) Buy some bright portable Halogen bulb lamps to use for lighting the boards and parts, also saves on eyesight! Good luck on the build and I hope to QSO with you, when I get s/n 6301 on the air and learn code!! Bill, KE5KWE On the Road in the USA Tony Parker-2 wrote: I began the build of K2 s/n 6358 today. Re: [Elecraft] dipole antenna efficiency
Let me bring this down to the practical world. My QTH is a 42.5 ft. Travel Trailer which is insulated from the ground by 6 Rubber Tires and Air. It has Metal, I presume Aluminum, siding and a Rubber over Wood Roof which is approx. 10 ft. off the ground. My K2 is almost built and I will be operating CW exclusively QRP. Are there any suggestions for either a commercially built antenna or a homebrew. (Recognizing that I am not a EE and have no formal electrical background!) Thanks Bill Fogel, KE5KWE On the Road in the USA This thread started with a person trying to find an antenna that would work reasonably well that does not take up much space. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/dipole-antenna-efficiency-tp14609719p14650029.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K1 crystal grounding
I am currently building a K2 and there is no such caveat. Each crystal is grounded, individually per instructions. Some are tied togeather, others are grounded on the top and others are grounded on the side or bottom. But I would follow the instructions in the manual and not improvise. Good Luck, Bill KE5KWE Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy wrote: Carl, FWIW when building crystal filters I have found that soldering the grounding wires to the bottom of the cans provides better isolation between crystals than to the top of the cans IF there is proper shielding in place 'below deck' and the crystals are laid out side by side in a straight line. If there is no shielding in place 'below deck' and if the filter crystals are not placed in a straight line there might not be any improvement gained by tacking to the bottom vs the top, since the crystal to crystal unwanted coupling could well be less than the unwanted coupling taking place elsewhere in or around the filter. The use a single wire and one ground connection to ground two or more crystal cans should be avoided if at all possible. IMHO I would leave your K1's filter crystal grounds as they are to avoid reheating the crystal cans. In my K2 I have the KSB2 installed and I did tack separate ground wires to the bottom of the crystal cans when building it, but the leakage around the filter masked any improvement in my case.. 73, Geoff GM4ESD WA7CS wrote on Thursday, January 03, 2008 3:33 PM I'm currently building the K1. When I built a K2 a few yers ago, there was an errata sheet or a builder alert, etc. advising that crystal grounding should be done near the bottom of the crystal can as opposed to the top of the can. I can't seem to find similar advice for the K1. I've already installed all of the crystals with the ground wire soldered to the top of the cans. I'm considering going back and tacking the ground wire to the sides/bottom of the crystal cans. Also, in the K2, I seem to recall that all of the crystals were grounded together with a wire along the top - no similar instruction for the K1. Should I do this, or is any potential benefit not worth the effort/risk? ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 AGC THRESHOLD
Hello All: This probably has been asked and answered before but I couldn't find it in the archives. I Set the AGC Threshold and could only get 3.644 volts out of R1 the potentiometer. Should I be concerned that I did not get 3.80 volts ? Thanks for the help.
