Check the colored table here <http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/randomWire/> .

For SOTA activations I'm using a KX3 and a 6m pole. Both antenna and
counterpoise are 12.8m (42ft). Works fine on all bands between 60m and 6m.
Not invented here, but copied from the "Bandspringer Midi" antenna offered

After having connected numerous COM and USB-to-COM devices, your Windows

low COM port numbers.

Take a look at Uwe Sieber's

and free all those blocked COM ports!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 internal battery problems

2016-05-09 Thread hb9brj
Per-Tore,

With increasing cycle count, individual cells are showing differences. If
you don't charge them individually, these differences are getting bigger, as
reflected by the numbers you posted.

You mentioned that you verified cell capacity using your charger. At what
discharge current? Most probably not at the 1.5A which the KX3 draws when
transmitting.

While powering my KX3 with 8 internal Eneloop cells and varying output
power, I found a total internal resistance of 1.15 Ohms. A single Eneloop
cell showed 34mOhm (I have an instrument measuring Ri by applying short
discharge current pulses). In total, only 25% of the total Ri comes from the
8 cells. Battery holder and wiring are responsible for 75%.

Re: [Elecraft] Prolific driver windows 10

2016-03-18 Thread hb9brj
Together with my K3 I ordered a KUSB back in 2008 (?) but never used it.
Today I opened the package. The instruction sheet is Revision A, dated
October 8, 2007. The enclosed mini-CD was unreadable, so I plugged the KUSB
into my Windows 10 PC and wondered what would happen. A driver was found but
the entry in Device Manager showed the famous yellow triangle plus an error
messge "The device cannot start (Code 10)".

After reading this and other threads in the Elecraft reflector I didn't want
to give up, but quickly found this solution:

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] SHIFT/WIDTH in DATA A mode

2015-04-05 Thread hb9brj
I was able to narrow down the problem. It is related to SYNC DATA
(CONFIG:SYNC DT) which forces the same crystal filter to be used for both RX
and TX. As long as SYNC DATA is OFF everything works as expected.

If SYNC DATA is ON:
(1) Toggling between SHIFT/WIDTH and LO/HI CUT is inhibited
(2) SHIFT control is inactive
(3) LO CUT and HI CUT both act as WIDTH control

Am not sure if these limitations are a logical consequence of SYNC DATA ON
or an unwanted side-effect.

[Elecraft] [K3] SHIFT/WIDTH in DATA A mode

2015-04-04 Thread hb9brj
After a long pause I started to operate in PACTOR again. My K3 behaves
differently today compared to earlier firmware some years ago. Current FW is
MCU 05.14, FPF 01.19, DSP 02.83.

In DATA A mode:
(1) PITCH shows N/A, in contradiction to the user manual. Seems to be fixed
at 1500 Hz. That's fine with me, as I can adjust the mark/space tones in my
PACTOR modem accordingly.

(2) SHIFT/WIDTH controls are showing a strange behaviour:
Based on the green LEDs next to the 2 controls, only LO/HI CUT is available,
SHIFT/WIDTH is not. When moving LO/HI cut, filter graphic and VFO B display
are both indicating a LO/HI cut, but what effectively happens is a width
variation. Verification is easy: Acoustically or on the P3 display.

Re: [Elecraft] Ultimate compact KX3 carrying case received -- perfect match for radio accessories!

2014-07-12 Thread hb9brj
The Think Tank Strobe Stuff is a perfect case for the KX3. However when
you put it in a backpack with other items, there is a risk your KX3 will
accidentally be switched on by external pressure on the respective switches.
I'm trying to prevent this by carefully packing my backpack.

Recently, when taking the KX3 out of its case on a summit two hours after
leaving home, everything seemed normal. The KX3 was off. When I switched it
on I was suprised about the low battery voltage reading because the 8
internal AA eneloop NiMH cells were fully charged in an external charger
just a few days earlier and took about 2.2Ah each. The big surprise however
came when I wanted to tune my antenna: The display went dead and the KX3
switched itself off. Back at home I confirmed that the NiMH cells were
completely discharged and that the KX3 is drawing around 60uA when switched
off, which is OK.

I prefer not to imagine in detail what might have happened inside my
backpack during my two-hour hike, but definitely the 2.2Ah were converted
into heat! Fortunately my KX3 seems to have suffered no damage.

Has anyone out there found an easy solution to protect the KX3 from being
switched on when carried around in a soft case?

Re: [Elecraft] My KX3 Battery Approach

2014-07-12 Thread hb9brj
Using 8 internal eneloop cells, I measured battery voltage versus current (as
shown on the KX3 display) during RX and different TX pwr levels, created an
Excel scatter chart and fitted a linear trend line. The result: 1.15 Ohms,
R^2 = 0.95.

A single eneloop cell has around 0.035 Ohms of internal resistance (measured
with a 4-connector battery DC resistance meter forcing current pulses thru
the cell under test).

My conclusion: 25% of the 1.15 Ohms are due to the 8 cells, 75% originate in
the battery holder and additional wiring.

The K3’s SYNC DATA feature can be used to

Locate CONFIG:SYNC DT. Assign it to a

Consequence: No frequency scanning (controlled by the PTC-II).

The audio part between the PTC-II's TRX Audio port and the K3 is
straightforward:
PTC Audio output (pin1) to K3 Line in
PTC Audio input (pin4) to K3 Line out
PTC PTT output (pin3) to K3 PTT in
PTC GND (pin2) to K3 GND ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rf gain tracking (main vs. sub)

2010-10-26 Thread hb9brj

After reading all comments, I performed an RF calibration using a -73dBm
source and the K3 Utility 1.3.10.15. First run with factory defaults, second
run using my signal source. A picture tells more than a lot of numbers:
http://home.datacomm.ch/hb9brj/RFgain.jpg

X axis = RF gain position angle in degrees: 0 = 3 o'clock, 90 = 12 o'clock,
180 = 9 o'clock
Y_left = CONFIG:SW TEST SCN ADC readout of RF gain pot
Y_right = DISP AFV in dBV

Contrary to my earlier statement my K3's main RX does show an RF gain
non-linearity.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub RF gain

2010-10-23 Thread hb9brj

I always experienced a significant difference when comparing main/sub signal
levels.
Mike's message triggered me to search for the cause.

Step 1: Changed RF/AF controls back to independent:
SQ MAIN = 0; SQ SUB = 0; SUB AF = nor.
No luck, the sub signal level was still much lower than main.

Step 2: Filter parameters. The filter loss compensation values did not
match!
Forgot to enter gain values after having added more filters to the sub RX.
Using the K3 Utility I copied the filter gain values from main to sub.
Same bandwidth = same gain value in both main and sub.

Problem solved: At identical settings (PRE, ATT, RF/AF Gain), main and
sub signal lelvels are now fully identical.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 voltage under load

2009-06-03 Thread hb9brj

When switching my K3 from RX to TX 100W FM, I measured these voltage drops:

0.03V directly at the Astron RS-35M's output
0.25V at an unused output of a WMR RIGrunner, connected to the RS-35M by a
2ft cable
1.00V as indicated by the K3, connected to the RIGrunner by a 4ft cable

By cable I mean the type supplied with the K3.

Certainly not as good as the 400mV reported by Guy K2AV.
Still better than the 1.7V reported by Harris K9RJ.
Corresponds to the 700mV reported by Joe W4TV (direct connection, no
RIGrunner)

Guess the major problem resulting from voltage drop is a reduced efficiency
of the KPA3.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 : no sound from speaker, no rx

Guys, i just completed the initial test and calibration.
I hear no sound from the speaker or headphone, the rx shows no s-meter
action when i transmit a signal with an other tx.
There are no ERR-Messages.

The radio ist equipped with the Transverter-Interface, I still have to
install the Sub-RX and KPA100.

Experienced the same when building my K3 in August 2008.

It seems that the AUX-DSP board (used by Sub-RX), when installed during the
front panel assembly, blocks the entire system as long as the Sub-RX itself is
not installed. Support told me to remove the AUX-DSP board, do the initial
tests and only reinstall it before adding the Sub-RX.

Re: [Elecraft] Transmitting low power through the PA

2009-03-29 Thread hb9brj

I have recently become interested in the WSPR beacon mode
(http://physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT), which involves transmitting a
continuous signal for periods of 2 minutes. At a level of 5W the underside of
the K3 gets uncomfortably hot. Since this is the sort of thing you want to
leave running all day, I'd prefer the 100W PA with its big heatsink and pair of
fans to take most of the strain. Is this possible?

Julian, I'm quite active in WSPR and can confirm that the LPA module is getting
hot. When I contacted Elecraft, they sent me a procedure to align several bias
currents on the LPA board. To get access, you have to remove the KPA3. I
realigned the bias currents but did not notice any significant difference in
the temperature of the bottom cover.

As a workaround, you can set PWR to let's say 15W and reduce the LINE IN (MIC)
setting.

Playing with PWR and MIC I can reduce my power all the way down to 100mW
(measured with an OHR WM-2 QRP wattmeter). And to my surprise my signal was
heard 2500km away...
