Re: [Elecraft] OT: Astron linear PS regulation issues

2019-02-25 Thread hbjr
I bought a Rackmount 35amp Astron when I started working at my office (the
office bought it). We turned it on in 1993 and it is still on today. I have a
50 amp at home that besides the crappy meter lights (they now are illuminated
by LEDs!), runs like a champ.

Funny though, when I find a supply with the -VDC tied to chassis ground, I
always pull it - some Astrons do and some don't. All of our other linear
supplies float (HP, QJE, Acopian). Keeps ground loops at bay!

I have two recent vintage Astron RS-35M units. They still use the exact same
723-based regulator circuit that they have used for thirty years or more, so
the design hasn't changed. What **may** have changed is the build quality. I
carefully inspected both of mine right after taking delivery. I made sure the
green wire from the AC cord was securely bonded to the chassis and checked for
obvious soldering problems. I also tied the negative output line to the
chassis. They have both been running like trains 24-7 for the last three years
or so. The only failures I've had (on both units) are the stupid internal meter
lamps.

Filter caps bad? AC on the DC supply side maybe? A well made linear supply
does not make noise that has to be filtered otherwise. All switching
supplies must be cleaned up because their design generates noise.

That's interesting. About the only way I know that a linear supply can be
noisy is if the regulator oscillates. That can easily happen. Most of them
use emitter followers, which are often unstable driving a capacitive load.
That's usually easy to fix by inserting a small inductance between the
emitter of the transistor and the load. A few turns of the appropriate sized
wire around a ferrite bead usually works.

I monitored this group before I bought my K3s back in October. I have learned
how to make cables for various things, who makes good homebrew gear (and some
guys that sell their own stuff for K3's and KX's), and even bought some used
Elecraft gear hear.

I'm not sure how to call out the wrong topics...I think we should all leave

This group is more about sharing the experience of using Elecraft products,
making suggestions for product improvements, offering other members advice on
best operating techniques, and so much more. Want a suggestion on which mic to
use with your K3s? How to setup memories for cw ops? Use external software to
operate your rig? The best type of PC to use or best approach to physically
interface your rig to your PC? These are just a very small set of questions you
might ask here.

This is an active community of devoted Elecraft users. But, it's also about ham
radio. Any kind of serious support question should go directly to Elecraft's
outstanding support staff via email.

Tonight, when I turned on my early (sn 431), but upgraded to current, K3, I
was surprised to find I had no speaker audio with either internal or
external speaker(s). My first thought was that I had somehow fried the
speaker AF amp chip. But then I found that the speaker audio worked fine if
the CONFIG were set to SPKR + PH = yes. That would seem to rule out the
speaker amp as the problem.

Anyone experience this, or have any ideas?

Thanks much!

[Elecraft] VHF Packet setup K3s/K144XV

2019-04-02 Thread hbjr
Hey gang.

Just double checking my setup. I'm using a PK-232sc+ for sound card modes,
FSK RTTY, CW, and PACTOR with my K3s. I recently added the K144XV and since
everything is already hooked up, I tried sending packet. After tweaking the
AFSK control on the PK for proper deviation and proper ALC, I gave it a shot
to the local BBS and it works great! Hit a Winlink gateway or two and used
a digipeater for a few more - worked great.

My question, is there a "mode" setting to do what I am doing, or will I need
to change the MIC input to Line-In every time I want to do FM packet instead
of FM voice? Currently that's the only way to make it work. On SSB,
changing to data opens the Line-In for data. Just curious for FM.

BTW: It is interesting to see the open carrier waveform on the P3 of
various 2 meter FM repeaters. Some look "clean" in my opinion and some look
"dirty" with no voice modulation even though the dead air sounds the same.

I enjoy my K3s setup more every time I use it!

[Elecraft] KTCX03-1 high stability reference oscillator

2019-05-19 Thread hbjr
Hey Folks.

In real world "seat-of-the-pants" experience, what difference if any would I
see upgrading to the KTCX03-1? I eventually would add the reference kit to
the internal 2 meter transverter.

One thought was improvement for FT8 (and eventually FT4) on HF and MFSK on 2
meters. I have read some saw an improvement in transmitted phase noise -
especially with a linear amp.

I'm just trying to prioritize my K3S upgrades before there are no K3S parts
left to go around!!

[Elecraft] Help with K3S upgrades

2019-05-25 Thread hbjr
I have just installed the 1 PPM TXCO in my K3S. I bought the K3S last
October as a kit and have installed many options since then.

One thing I'm concerned with is the reference calibration. Without a good
frequency counter, I'm using WWV on 15Mhz and using beat cancelation. My
ears are pretty good, but no match for a good frequency counter.

Any guys in the NW GA area (Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina area
really) that would be willing to help me set that reference calibration with
a good counter? I'd be willing to pay you for your time!

I guess I could send the rig back to California, I just don't want to be
without it for a several weeks.

Any takers?

Agreed. I've have the external ref module which actually measures the TCXO
frequency and on my K3 the drift is pretty close to over after 60 minutes. I've
tracked it all the way to four hours. It is useful to keep an eye on the front
panel temp (DISP - FP). The TXCO is located in close order with the front panel
and that influences the drift. Mine usually tops out at 37 to 39C.

How long will the K3S be in production? I'm a new owner as of last fall and
hope pieces/parts and upgrades will continue for some time.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3s Sensitive adjustment for FT8

Something new has come up with the
K3s/JTDX settings and I can't find where to adjust it to make a change. This
is new, it has been fine till a couple days ago & maybe the recent win 10
update nailed me again?

Till now, when setting the levels for Tx for FT8, I would adjust the setting
on the screen for 4-5 bars with the last one flickering by adjusting the
output with the speed/Mic knob. The line level would be somewhere around 5-7
to get this reading.

Now I have what seems like
hyper-sensitivity, overdrive in that I now get 5 solid bars with none
flickering at line level 2, I get no bars at line level 1.

With the K3s set at 20W drive:

At line level 0 I have no output.

At line level 1 I have 18W & no bars

At line level 2 I have 5 bars and 18W
output.

There is no adjustment to give me 1, 2, 3 or 4 bars.

I have tried setting the windows sound
settings at different values with no
success, this issue persists.

Any idears?

Thanks,

I've used one at a digipeater site and it took a static hit think - nearby

I have used them for ground loops with sound cards. 5000v isolation

Subject: [Elecraft] KIO3B USB Surge Suppressor

Looking for input from anyone who has successfully installed a
surge-suppression device on a USB port. I am in the process of repairing a
KIO3B board after a recent thunderstorm.

The KIO3B uses an ST Microelectronics USBLC6-2 ESD protection device at the
front end of the K3's USB connector. The protection device is a SOT chip
that contains five low-capacitance diodes to clamp voltage to acceptable
limits.

In this case, the diodes have shorted, causing the USB connector to show a
dead short to the PC's USB port, which causes an overload to the PC's USB
power bus. This has caused all USB ports to disappear in Windows Device
Manager. The short goes on until I can get to the remote site, sometimes
days or even weeks later.

Ideally, I would like to find a USB protection device that is designed to
fail open - open as in an open circuit into the USB driver that follows.
That way, I can still find a problem if Windows Device Manager doesn't show
a USB connection while not risking the destruction of the PC's USB power
bus.

Re: [Elecraft] Digital modes on 144MHz only

2019-07-04 Thread hbjr
I was not happy with the 9700 - it had calibration issues. I returned it.

I have the internal K144XV with the reflock board and 1PPM TXCO installed in
the K3S - the external reference clock for the K3S would be better. So far
it has worked on the few digital modes I have tried. I use an external
soundcard (PK-232sc+) because I like its specs and it also is a real TNC for
packet and pactor. So far so good. I'm only running a 200 watt amplifier.

Digital modes on 144MHz only

I plan for a second station to use for digital modes on 144MHz only. If you
look at performance only (no price, no ergonomics, no use outside digital
modes on 144MHz) what would you prefer

1) K3/K3S with internal transverter
2) IC-9700

In both cases I plan to use a 1kW amplifier.

Hi Kjeld,

I'm using the internal K144XV in one my K3s. It's very sensitive and stable
(using the REFLOCK board, too), so no problem on that. BUT: the cooling design
is just terrible! :-( It's all passive relying on the side plate of the
transceiver to dissipate the heat. While this works ok-ish on SSB it's a
nightmare on CW and especially digimodes! Heat does not get dissipated fast
enough so the whole transverter heats up quite fast which results in a serious
power drop, in my case from 10 watts down to about 5-6 watts! :-( That means
instead of 1 kW output it's just
5-600 W after about 10 minutes of operation with my PA behind. :-(

I had a second K144XV and behaviour was the same. Same is true for a third one
at a friend of mine so I assume this is a general design flaw. :-(

I can only second Conrad's, PA5Y, suggestion concerning the HA1YA transverter.
Very good performance and reasonably priced compared to the Kuhne stuff (which
is probably even a tad better). Using the PRO models myself on 4 & 2 m.

@Wayne:
If you're reading this please make sure the planned 144/430 MHz module in the
K4 will work much better! Serious DX on VHF is almost all digital nowadays and
the internal transverter needs to handle that ...
