[Elecraft] Elecraft radios

2011-10-04 Thread Mike K5NU
Fellow Crafters,

After work I mowed the back lawn and thought I might try to work T32C if the
higher bands were open. I managed to work them on 10 and 15 ssb. The 10M op
didn't say anything, but the 15M op noted I was a new one for them. He didn't
remember working another bicycle mobile. I needed the T32 for my recumbent
bicycle DXCC. T32 was number 74. Running the K2 battery powered with a 8 ft.
whip for 10 and a another mobile antenna for 15. These Elecraft radios are
waaay too much fun,.

May the mojo force be with you.

[Elecraft] APF

2010-12-07 Thread k5nu
Fellow Elecrafters,

Many of you have praised the current version of apf. Since I spend 99%
or more of my time listening for weak signals on 80m, it should be a
very useful adjunct. How do you utilize the apf - with NR on or off?
My particular preference for listening keeps the NR on - never off. I
use 1-3 or 1-4 on cw and find the apf quite uneffective with the NR on.

That said, I have found very few occasions when the NR/NB combo needs
anything else and am quite happy with the listening experience.
However, if I could find a method where apf could help even more, I
would welcome it.

I use diversity rx always, NR on always, RF gain about 2-3 o'clock on
both rxs, AF gain at approx. 12 o'clock. Incidently, I very seldom use
a filter narrower than 2.4kHz unless in a contest situation. Just fits
my ears/brain filter. Antennas for rx- 4 square/beverage.

Any input would be appreciated as at present I try apf but find it of
little use at these parameters. Of course I am not complaining as I
really enjoy the K3's low band abilities.

[Elecraft] K3 APF, etc

2010-10-26 Thread k5nu
Fellow Elecrafters,

I am appreciative of all the new and exciting functions which are being
or have been incorporated into the K3 firmware. However, I am at the
same time hoping someone will develop a laminated sheet summarizing all
the new operations and how to use them. I spend almost my entire ham
radio time dxing on 80m where the signal to noise ratio is almost always
poor.I fear that by the time I remember how to implement some of the
new improvements, the weak station will be gone.

It reminds me of my new Nikon camera. By the time I have figured out
what fstop, ISO, and Aperture settings I need, the bird I was hoping to
get a great photo of is in the next county. Many of the good rare
weak sig dx on 80 is best worked very quickly before the power squadron
arrives.

Of course this is all dependent on the K3 usage - contest, dx, etc.

Good dx and K3ing in the coming holiday season.

[Elecraft] Filter offsets

2010-03-28 Thread Mike K5NU
Fellow Crafters,

The subject matter on this list often gets very technical - too technical - for
those of us who have their primary expertise in areas other than digital
electronics and computer programming, etc. Out here in the country, I don't
have access to spectral analyzers and other test equipment. I determine my K3
filter offsets by plumb bobbing. 20 lb. monofiliment with the ceiling fan off.

Proceed at your own discretetion.

[Elecraft] K3

2010-02-17 Thread K5NU
Elecrafters,

I have just written a long email to the reflector, and then deleted it. I
did you a favor. hi I will keep my opinion to myself. However, I know that
scopes, skimmers, computers, etc. are an integral part of the hobby in 2010.
However, I find that - just as in the past 50 years - my favorite operating
position is sitting at the desk at night with my forehead on the desk, my
eyes closed, my fingers on the vfo dial, slowly tuning across 80 meters
listening for the weak dx signal calling cq. The fun of finding a rare one
before he is spotted has kept my interest/fun level up for half a century.
I operated PSK for a few days, and bought an SDR-1000 and used it a few
times. Gazing at a computer screen and/or operaing a radio with a mouse
inspired me not at all.

Give me my K3 in diversity rx mode, NR at 1-4 on cw, NB on, RF back a bit, a
pad for my forehead, and I'm set. Keep in mind this is coming from an old
dinosaur with a very small brain.

Ham radio is way too much fun.

[Elecraft] AGC/RF/AF

2010-02-02 Thread K5NU
Elecrafters,

I am keeping up with interest the thread on the use of RF gain, ATT, PRE,
etc. For the past several years my time has been spent primarily chasing dx
on my favorite band, 80m. So far this season, I have managed to work 177
countries on 80m. This means like the 160 guys, I spend most of my time
trying to hear weak signals amongst the band noise/qrn/qrm. I have found
what for me is a sweet spot with my K3 using diversity rx, with the nb and
nr(1-3) , RF and AF gain reduced on both rxs. I would certainly not turn
down any improvement, but find the K3 quite good at digging out the weak
ones. I use Bose noise canceling headphones. For diversity I use the 4
square on the main and a short Beverage on the Sub RX. I very seldom use
narrower bandwidth than 2.0 Khz on rx.

I am looking forward to further improvements in the K3 and congratulate and
appreciate the Elecraft team for their continued efforts on our behalf.

[Elecraft] K3 speakers

2009-12-17 Thread K5NU
Since I also restore old vintage stereo receivers, etc., I feed the audio
from the K3 to a stereo amp/receiver and out to an old set of Yamaha
speakers. I have hi/lo cut filters, control of bass and treble and all
needed volume. Fills the room. However, since I spend most of my time
chasing dx on 80m, I wear my Bose noise canceling headphones with the NB and
NR on in diversity mode, and hear very little but signals coming through.
I have never noticed the K3 being any noisier than any other radio.

Merry Christmas and HNY to all Ecrafters.

[Elecraft] Split

2009-10-19 Thread k5nu
Elecrafters,

With the latest beta 3.44 I seem to notice something different when toggling
between split and no split. I hear a change in the audio on the main rx when
changing to split and back. I don't remember hearing that in the past. It may
not be significant, but it seems the audio on the main rx is shifting a bit.

[Elecraft] Shift 0.1

2009-08-12 Thread k5nu
Crafters,

I have just installed 3.25 beta. Maybe I am blind to an obvious setting etc.,
but when I change from shift 0.1 to 0.5, my 2.7 filter bandwidth sure sounds
better. At the shift setting 0.1, the radio audio sounds puffy noisy at the
same settings at the 2.7 bandwidth. Have to stick to the 0.5 setting for now.

Maybe I will discover the difference, but so far I don't find it. The radio
sounds terrible in the wider bandwidth filter with the shift setting at 0.1.
Just my observation. Maybe erroneous.

Also when changing the shift settings, the radio goes to a narrower filter
automatically as the change takes place. I guess that is how it is supposed to
be.

Shortly put, the different shift settings in the menu make my radio sound
different in the 2.7 filter range.

[Elecraft] Service

2008-09-19 Thread k5nu
Fellow Crafters,

Due to a problem I had with the R91 mod during my KRX3 install, it was
recommended that I return my K3 for repair. I sent it in recently, and today
received a call from Rene and discussed my repair. The K3 is now on it's way
home. I want to let Elecraft, Rene, and everyone on the list know that I
reallyappreciate the care and consideration shown. Clearly the ingredient that
sets this company and this radio apart from the rest. Just my 2 cents worth.

Fellow crafters,

It is misting rain, but on my lunch hour, I put the 15m ant on the back of my
recumbent bicycle, hooked up the K2 and worked the VP6 on ssb. #74 ssb coutry
for the /bicycle mobile set up running 8 w or less. Is the K2 a good ssb

[Elecraft] K3

2008-02-02 Thread k5nu
Well I am snakebit today. Finally I found a shorted transistor and two loose
diodes and fixed them all. Unfortunately that took me three or four removals
of the KPA3. And you guessed it, now I have a pin missing on the KPA3 board it
apparently broken off in the KPIO3 board. I will have no hair by Monday for
sure.

2008-02-02 Thread k5nu
I have been unable to run the 50w tx gain calibration after installing my KPA3.
I opened it back up and found two unsoldered diodes on the KPA3 board.
However, after resoldering the two diodes, unfortunately still not able to run
the calibration. Getting ERR TXG on some bands and HI CURR on others. Hair
pulling time.

Can someone assist? All went well with K3 until the very last calibration.
After KPA3 install, the tx gain cal will not run above 12 w setting. 50w tx
gain cal will not run and gives ERR TXG message. Tx gain cal will run
correctly at 12w or below. KPA3 module problem?? Before I uninstall the KPA3,
perhaps someone has an idea of something I am missing? I have checked all the
other settings and all seem to be where they should be.

[Elecraft] K3

2007-11-26 Thread k5nu
Fellow Crafters,
I have remained, though difficult, silent during these tense times of duress
and frustration. The wait for the K3 is grudgingly plodding along - or
seemingly so. Well, the K3 has some living up to do. To pass the time
tonight, I took the dust cover off K2 #381 and checked to see if she still has
the mojo. Now I must admit that I put in long hot hours putting my antenna
together - a 4 square out in the back forty, but still, the K2 is just too much
fun. Just a quick half hour on 80m - G4AMN, G4OFY, EI6S, GW4RIB, G3UCK,
PA3FUN, M1WDK, G4PEL on ssb and then down to cw for G3WZT, SM7DLK, F6ACD, and
DJ6CA. I even cranked it up to 10 w once. Way too much fun. If the K3 is
way much better than the K2, well , I'm not sure I can take it. I'll try real
hard though. I have had a place cleared on the desk for a long time and can't
wait to fill it.

I propose a toast to Elecraft, keeping the hobby enjoyable. May the Eleforce
be with you.

[Elecraft] K3

2007-04-28 Thread k5nu
Lyle, Amidst all the technical questions:
What all in the way of "filters" would you suggest would be necessary for a K3
set up primarily for DXing? As far as roofing filters are concerned, the next
closest DXer to my qth is probably in the neighborhood of 100 miles, so no
close by strong signals anyway.

I am trying to plan my oder form of course.
I intend to get the 100w version and the atu. My question is primarily about
the kind and number of filters for options.

Thanks for any input.
