[Elecraft] K2 5233 alignment problems

2009-04-29 Thread kf4pob
I hear that a third time is a charm. This is the third time trying to post and
I hope it works.
I am at the alignment section of phase III and everything seems to have gone
hay-wire. Phases I and II went well with only a couple of glitches that were
corrected with your help. I checked and repaired a few solder joints, looked
for solder bridges and correct parts in the correct locations and fired up the
unit. No smoke and no overheating. I set the power out at 2 watts, unit at 7100
and hit the button to adjust L1 and L2. I had .2-.3 watts indicated but they
did not fluctuate when adjusting the pots. I checked the diode and resisters
that they said were easily reversed and they were all ok. Using the rf probe I
had no voltage at either side of r50. Further checks of components in the
transmitter section found most of the U chips had improper voltages or double
voltages at the appropriate pinsl I then went back to phase I and started
running checks again. All was ok until I got to the tone generator and pitch. I
now had neither!. The display showed the values I had after t
he construction of that phase but now they are gone. When I hit the button to
turn the tone on the audio went away. I did notice a very low click when I
adjusted the vfo. I also went back to check the birdy at 7000 and found it to
be very weak and totally disappeared when I moved the vfo dial. It came back
when I hit the edit button but very shaky.
Logic dictates the problem is in the construction phase of part III. The above
is a short synopsis of the checks I did but I did not take the time to give the
actual values of the U pin voltages at this time. I have tried to post twice
before and want to verify this message goes thru before taking the time to
enter the values. This leads to two questions

1)? Where do you suggest I start from here?
2)? Is there anywhere I can get a picture of the rf board before any parts are
installed. That would be great for helping me locate any solder bridges on
those small pads.

Thanks in advance for your help.

[Elecraft] section II alignment pll problems

2008-10-10 Thread kf4pob
I have tried all tests and checks offered up by you good folks but none of them
have cured my problem. I have even gone to a local ham buddy that has built one
and we both could not find the cure. I have verified that all the parts are
correct and in the right place. I have re-soldered all joints, those looking
questionable or not. I also verified that the 12597.91 frequency displayed is
in fact accurate.all voltages are correct, L31 is correct and capacitors c84
c85 are correct. When checking the cathode voltages on d16 d17 the voltage
did come and go when hitting the band- and band + buttons. I noticed the
voltage came and went on BOTH of the diodes simultaneously. Male?logic?kicked
in and said is that right? If the two diodes are used to vary the frequencies
to the display shouldn't they be activated one at a time, one with band+ and
one with band-?
Thanks in advance for your input.

[Elecraft] K2 PLL range test SN 05233

2008-10-07 Thread kf4pob

I am at the end of part II and have started my alignment procedures. When I got
to CAL FCTR the frequency was 12597.91 with a little fluctuation in the .91?
The next step was to the PLL reference oscillator range test. When pushing the
Band+ or Band- I get no frequency change at all.? I performed the following
voltage test with the rig set on 40 meters.
U6??? lead 1?? 7.6 vdc U5?? Lead 1?? 4.9 vdc RP3?? Lead?? 1
7.6 vdc
?? 2?? 4.1 vdc??? 2?? 5.0
vdc2 4.1 vdc
???3???4.1 vdc??? 3?? 5.0
vdc??? 3 4.1 vdc
???4???0.0 vdc??? 4?? 4.9
vdc??? 4 0.0 vdc
?? 5?? 4.1 vdc??? 5???0.0
vdc??? 5 0.0 vdc
???6?? .67 vdc??? 6?? 2.0
vdc??? 6 4.2 vdc
?? 7?? 8.3 vdc??? 7?? 4.1
vdc??? 7 4.2 vdc
?? 8?? 8.3 vdc8?? 4.1
vdc8 8.3 vdc

One thing I did notice that before I pushed any of the band buttons the bar
graph was on +20.
When I hit Band + or Band - the bar dropped down one led. I don't know if this
indicates or points to the problem. I checked and rechecked my soldering and it
looks ok.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] hand mic for the K2

2006-08-14 Thread Kf4pob
I am at the stage in my k2 building experience where I need to configure the
mic jack in the rig. I want to keep the rig all Elecraft but unless I read
the web site wrong, Elecraft no longer offer the one listed in the accessory
page of the building manual. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience
with
the other mics they show that can be configured for use?

Any input will be greatly appreciated.
