[Elecraft] K2 memory keyer problem
It's been a few years since I last used my K2. In firing it up, I find that I have somehow locked the Preamp button into a stored msg mode. Everytime I try to select the Preamp I get a msg being keyed. I've gone through the manual, but can't find a way to cancel this and get my Preamp function back. Can someone clue me in on this? Well, I did some experimenting this morning. On RTTY I can use PTT to key the rig and it works in a snappier way than using vox for afsk rtty. On voice, though, I key the rig with ptt from my laptop but no audio. I tried setting the menu entry to mic+line but it tells me NOT APPL. Not sure what to make of that. Anyone else tried this? Re: [Elecraft] PTT plus VOX -- possible?
Hi Iain I finally got it working, but I went through so many permutations that I'm not sure where I'm at right now. I'm letting it sit overnight and will check it again tomorrow. If it still works right, I'll writer down all the settings for my notebook. The idea is to have N1 MM do most of the canned messages-CQ, TU etc. But I will have to voice the exchange as it is RST plus serial number and I don't want to mess with number files to express a serial number. It's easier just to speak that one. Hope to see you in the contest. 73, Bob N6WG - Original Message - From: iain macdonnell - N6ML a...@dseven.org To: n...@comcast.net Cc: Fred Cady fc...@ece.montana.edu, elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, February 7, 2012 12:04:09 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] PTT plus VOX -- possible? [Elecraft] PTT plus VOX -- possible?
I'm trying to set up my K3 to be keyed by PTT from my laptop for voice contests to transmit the various canned messages under the N1MM F keys. I also want to be able to key with vox when I need to give an exchange by voice, such as when it includes a serial number that changes with each QSO. In the menu, I only see PTT or VOX, nothing to indicate both can work at the same time. Any ideas? [Elecraft] P3 birdies in display
I’ve dug through the archives looking for info on fixing this. So far no luck. I understand the birdies I’m seeing are harmonics from oscillators within the K3. Has anyone done any experiments in the K3 to reduce these birdies? Maybe moving cables, or adding ground straps somewhere? Re: [Elecraft] P3 birdies in display
Hi Peter Yes, I too have the marching noise peaks, but mine go away when I disconnect the antenna from my K3. My problem is the pips that look just like a signal but move across the screen at a either the same pace as the cursor, or at some multiple of its pace. I remember Eric saying that these are harmonics from internal oscillators in the K3. I'm wondering if anyone has tackled the problem of reducing or eliminating these birdies. thanks for the reply and Merry Christmas, Peter. 73, Bob N6WG The Little Station with Attitude - Original Message - From: Peter Torry peter_to...@btopenworld.com To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, December 19, 2011 9:53:48 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 birdies in display Hi Bob, I too have had noise peaks pass from left to right across the screen of the P3 leaving a diagonal waterfall trace. First a small one, then one at +40 dB above the reference level then another small one, all moving slowly across the screen. Nothing is heard on the K3 and occurs even when the P3 is disconnected from the K3 and is therefore internally generated. I cured the noise peaks by ensuring all the case connections were clean, the fixing screws reasonably tight and re installed all of the ribbon and coax connectors in the P3. The screws holding the display to the front panel made the most difference as I was careful not to over tighten them originally !! I also have re radiation of 19kHz noise on 2m that still comes and goes even though I have filtered the supply lead. 73 Peter G3SMT From: n...@comcast.net n...@comcast.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, 17 December 2011, 17:13 Subject: [Elecraft] P3 birdies in display I’ve dug through the archives looking for info on fixing this. Re: [Elecraft] Noise Blanker Wish List.
Geoff That's the way the NB in my old Kenwood TS180 worked. It has an 8 MHz 1st IF, and the NB pickoff is before the 8 MHz crystal filter, as I recall. The NB is tunable with a front panel control to allow you to move away from an interfering signal. 73, Bob N6WG -- Original message -- Greetings Folks, An Evasive noise blanker is on my wish list. This is the system where the noise blanker receives noise from out of band and none of its circuits (except for its input tap off and the IF Gate) are in the main signal path. Best done when you can tune the noise blanker receiver a little to avoid strong out of band signals (ie evasive). The result is that your crosstown friend at S9++ and 1 kc up does not key the noise blanker. The idea has been around for a long time, Collins used it but they picked up noise at low VHF. Bit more complex but it really pays off I've found. 73, Geoff. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] on the topic of autotuners
I wonder whether a simple phono connector on the rear of the rig or ATU wouldn't give access to an alalog voltage line. It could be used with an external meter for tuning indications. Calibration would still be a question, I suppose. 73, Bob N6WG Steve, I agree, the bypass would be a welcome addition. I'd also like to see a meter. It's nice to see power out and SWR. Re: [Elecraft] on the topic of autotuners
I would suppose that a simple pot would allow one to calibrate to 100 uA, assuming the source could provide at least that much current. I'm always looking for the simplest solution possible. I hate complexity for complixity's sake :-) 73, Bob N6WG -- Original message -- Bob, That's a good point. I suppose if you knew that 100W should provide say 100 uA, you could use a Bird 43 to develop a scale for the meter. Maybe moving the KAT into an EC2, finding a meter that fits the front panel would accomplish this in a neat package. 73, Julius n2wn --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I wonder whether a simple phono connector on the rear of the rig or ATU wouldn't give access to an alalog voltage line. Re: [Elecraft] Strange K2 Failure Mode
Jim From your description, it sounds like you are in SPLIT mode. Check the manual for directions. Good luck and 73 Bob N6WG -- Original message -- I bought a k2/100 from someone on this list several months ago, and shipped to my remote QTH in CA. Just got out here to play with it last weekend. It works fine on 160, but on 40 (and probably other bands, haven't had time to check) the tuning knob tunes makes the frequency readout change but the transmitted frequency (as observed on another radio) doesn't. The readout said 7002 kHz, but the transmitted (and receive) freq was around 7070. Any ideas what could be causing this? Some operational settings I'm forgetting about? Other glitches: Tuning knob is VERY stiff compared to my own K2. Don't have tools with me to work on it here to diagnose cause. Strong transients when the RF gain knob is turned (sounds like DC on the pot from a leaky cap). Causes the AGC line to essentially mute the radio for a second or so, then recovers to where the knob sets it. Any ideas on these things? Re: [Elecraft] K2 Frequency Jumps
Dave Does the K2 jump frquency only at that one spot, or about every 5 kHz across the band? If the latter, it may be you need to do the CAL PLL routine. A good procedure is written upon W3FPR's web page. Good luck and 73 Bob N6WG Hello folks: My K2 has developed a problem where the frequency seems to jump or skip about .5 kHz when tuning across the bands.
