[Elecraft] K3 Transmit problem

2008-10-01 Thread paul hendershott

I must have inadvertently changed a setting because I'm having trouble
transmitting. My last contacts were FB during a contest a few weeks back. Same
up-to-date firmware, no changes. Now when I start talking with the VOX settings
on my MD-2 mic ( set for "fpl bias" when I checked the settings in the MIC SEL
Main menu) I get a full carrier out with no modulation and I can no longer hear
my voice being transmitted, only a loud hissing noise keeps transmitting even
though I've stopped talking on VOX. Any suggestions? I reloaded the firmware
twice with no change. I'm sure I'll feel silly when I figure this out :-)

I have been supplying a Solar Charge Controller Kit for several years. This
controller will keep a SLA or LA 12 volt battery charged from solar panels

used with these controllers.

The new batch of circuit boards I received had a problem from the board
supplier and had to be made over. This delayed shipment on a few orders but
I have the corrected circuit boards now and all orders have shipped. (The
silk screen was on the wrong side of the board.. go figure.)

The kit is $30 or two for $50 check or money order and includes all the
parts and
documentation required to build the controller, less a box to mount it into.

I also still have about 8-10 of the low power controller. This
controller will handle up to 1.5 amps or about 20 watts. This version will
power a KX1, K1 or QRP K2. The price for this version is $16

order from:

Re: [Elecraft] A 2006 K2-B w/ Color TFT?

2006-05-31 Thread paul hendershott
I like Fred's idea. The K2 is a great radio with performance that need litle or
no improvement. However, if Elecraft offered a larger footprint case along with
a color TFT
display and more funtions given over to their own knobs and buttons instead of
the multiple menues, I'd be in line to pick one up in heartbeat. Of course I
have no idea if something like that is even possible, but it's fun to think
about it!

is that Elecraft will probably not create a K3 any
time soon. But the designers did make the xcvr very
modular - with a front panel, control, and RF board.

My quest would be able to buy and build a KSD2,
a display upgrade option for my K2. I'm sure there
would be many hams who are perfectly happy with their
K2 just as it is. Others not.

[Elecraft] Applied 12V to accessorie jack

2014-03-11 Thread paul hendershott
Hi Folks,

I lent my K2100 out to a ham in Reading, PA a few years ago

and apparently he misplaced the power connector and applied 12V directly to

the 12 V power-out jack (Anderson Power Pole connector). He said the radio
powered up fine, but when he went to

tune up and transmit, the unit went dead. I got the radio back about a year and
a half ago
and want to dive in and see what might have happened. Can anyone give me a
place to start
or have an idea if I'm looking at just replacing a fuse or something more
involved?

Thanks!

[Elecraft] OT: Flat Panel Display Died

2006-06-19 Thread paul hendershott
Way OT! I was hoping that some of you computer types could reply to me "Off
List" with some possible fixes.

I have a 4 year old Dell Flat Panel Display that seemed to die during what
may have been a power surge. My Satellite System died as well, but worked again
when I re-booted it. Both were plugged into surge protectors so go figure. :-)

I took the back panel off to see if the power supply fuse was blown, but the
fuse was good - just no powering up at all for the monitor. I'm using a
substitute flat panel display which is working well, so it's definitely the
unit.

Any ideas? Any things that go bad routinely in these units?

Thanks for helping and please respond Off List.

Re: [Elecraft] New Amp: Mt Everest!

2005-04-26 Thread paul hendershott
I don't see the point in debating the "Meaning of Elecraft" between the Qrp and
Qro crowds. I think Elecraft is evolving and growing to meet the needs of ALL
hams. Does a K2/100 not work as perfectly as a K2? Is the KX1 the coolest,
smallest, most enjoyment ever put into a tiny box? You bet!

I happen to love Qrp. I like a 100 watts as well. Do I need an 800 watt or 1500
watt amp with autotuner? OF COURSE I do! I need it because it would be fun to
have it when conditions are abysmal. I need it because it will be yet another
wonderful piece of Elecraft designed ham equipment that will yield countless
hours of soldering enjoyment. I need it for the same reasons that men need to
climb Mt. Everest - "because it's there!". Will I probably have to donate a
kidney to afford it? Absolutely!

Now here's the great part - Buy it and build it for the fun of it and then Sell
it if you have to! I bet you could charge a $500 premium to sell the hottest
Amp on the market that will work with every rig out there! I imagine folks will
be lining up for these babies. Anyway, Kudos to Elecraft for stepping up to the
plate with their ingenuity, flare, and their dedication to become the major
force that they are in ham equipment for All hams!

Re: [Elecraft] MP-1 Quality?

2004-09-08 Thread paul hendershott
John,
Luckily, I had no problem with my MP-1like you describe. I used it primarily
SSB about 2 years ago mostly on vacation, at Dayton, or when on picnic table
breaks along the interstate. I found it very well machined except for one of
the threads on a tripod leg. I did find the MP-1 a little finicky to manually
tune, but definitely more than adequate and had a good number of contacts. ie,
I would recommend the antenna.

However, recently I purchased a factory-built Buddipole system which I used
during the tail end of Field Day and over the next two weeks. My experience
with the buddipole was a better one. The antenna performed better from the
living room of my frame bungalow and also on a tripod in my back yard. I did a
side-by-side test in my house with both antennas optimized w/ my MFJ ant
analyzer, and the buddipole was better on all accounts. Admittedly, this was a
very limited and extremely unscientific test, but nonetheless convinced me to
use the buddipole when size was not a limiting factor. While the buddipole does
break down to nice carrying case, the MP-1 has it beat hands down in
transportability. If I'm traveling on business(seldom these days) and it all
has to fit in my briefcase, the the MP-1 is probably coming along. I think both
work well for their intended use, but if I'm going on vacation, have enough
room for a tripod and a 6' diameter of real estate to place it on, and
  can
throw either into the trunk, the buddipole is most likely making the trip. I
would like to see Elecraft market the Buddipole as well under Elecraft colors.
The more choices the merrier! just my $.02

I just returned from a trip to the beach. We had a great time swimming,
laying in the sun, and drinking beer but my attempts at Ham Radio were not
very successful. I had brought along my K2 and an MP-1 that I had purchased
earlier this summer from Elecraft. As usual the K2 worked great but I can't
say the same for the MP-1. This is my second one. The first one was
replaced by Elecraft because I had stripped the threads on top of the coil
trying to get the whip screwed in. Whoever built it had done a terrible
job. It was covered with filings and oil and had many sharp edges where it
had been machined. I was very surprised because, all in all, the quality of
the antenna looked very good except for the final machining and threading.
Anyhow, Elecraft replaced it. When the replacement arrived, I took it out
of the box and very carefully assembled it. It had the same problems as the
first one so I spent some time cleaning the threads using a bolt that I got
from the local ACE. Once they were clean, I had no problem screwing
everything together. I put it back in the box and set it aside until I our
vacation.

After enjoying the beach for a couple of days, I set up the station and got
ready to work some holiday QSO's but, alas, this didn't happen. The new
antenna had a loose connection. It turned out that the hole that the
horizontal screw that secures the bottom of the coil was stripped making an
intermittent connection. Now I don't know what to do. Do I try to fix it
myself, send it back to Elecraft for another replacement, or send it to
MP-1? I don't recall how long I have had it other than it was purchased
earlier this summer.

Has anyone else had similar problems with a new MP-1?

Re: [Elecraft] Re: recommended switching supply

I have used the Alinco 330MV for a few years in my shack with no detectable
noise until last year. Operating portable with the 330 sitting on top of my
K2/100, I did get a little hash on 17m and 20m. It wasn't bad, but with a twist
of the "noise offset" knob, it was shifted away. Also, if I moved the 330 a few
feet away from the K2, I had no detectable noise. Don't hear the noise with the

I just received my 2005 calander from Ron N3EPA today, and it is GREAT! Chock
full of Good Stuff!

I encourage everyone to pick one up for the new year. It sure will help bolster
the Elecraft to Elecraft contacts and awards and you'll meet a truly nice bunch
of folks! Only 4 days left, though - yikes!

[Elecraft] OT: Annoying Noise: problem solved

2005-01-17 Thread paul hendershott
A while back I had a loud noise problem on 20m & 17m which I tracked down to a
neighbor's doorbell transformer that was going bad. Then about 7 months ago I
encountered a similar extremely loud but "marching" noise that wiped out all
but the 80m band with S9 + 20 noise spikes at roughly 1 second intervals. I
used an MFJ-852 broadband noise receiver to track it down finally to an area of
my house. Since that portion of the house was on one circuit, turning off the
breaker confirmed my suspicion by ending the noise abruptly. I then proceeded
to turn off everything connected to each outlet one by one. But when I finished
the noise was still there. How could that be! Finally after checking all the
outlets again, I found a cord going behind my couch in the family room that I
assumed to go to a table lamp. It turned out to go to my spare Dewalt 24V
Battery charger that I kept upstairs in the house and had forgotten about. Yep!
This was the culprit. A simply battery charger created
 such
interference on my attic loop antenna, as to make the bands virtually unusable.

I seem to remember reading in the recent ARRL on-line bulletin where the FCC
had ruled against the neighbor of a ham who was getting similar interference
from the neighbor's Snowmobile Battery Chargers. With so many devices dependent
on rechargeable power cells these days, keep an eye out for these inexpensive
radio-deafening contraptions.
