Re: [Elecraft] K3 13.8 VDC power
Hi to the group I have a K3 and a KX3 with PX3 and PA100. I always keep an up to date config file on my computer. If I get an out of sequence power off I always restore the config using the Elecraft utility. If I load new firmware I also restore the good config. If I go to field day I make sure there is a good config file for each operator. This allows each operator to have their favorite settings and when I get home I can eliminate any unwanted changes by reloading my known good config file. I use a battery for camping and field day but even there a connector can come unplugged and cause trouble to the config file. Troubles in the config file do not always show up right away as any memory spot can be damaged. The config file can be spoiled by a fat finger when changing setting in the rig menu. It can also be spoiled when having trouble reloading firmware. My recommendation is to keep the config file clean and ready. Battery backup may be used for other reasons such as finishing a QSO but it should not be used just to prevent config file problems. Ken W0CZ w0cz at i29 dot net Sent from my iPad Well, more good information. Maybe I stand corrected. It's been nearly 4 years since I have read the manual, and my memory may have read more into the statements than it should have. I refer to page 13, right hand column, halfway down, entitled POWER. There is a note that reads To ensure correct save of operating parameters, turn the K3 off /before/ turning the power supply off. When I read that, I thought about the short duration power failures we experience. I thought If I only use the battery for backup to shutdown, there should be a minimum of charging. I have been using a UPS on the AC supply, but I trust a float battery I can test on the DC. I may abandon the whole idea and stay with the UPS. Sometimes rejection is a good thing. Note: As I learn more about this radio, I appreciate the thought that went into it's design. Thanks for the posts, and the bandwidth. Re: [Elecraft] TIP, RING,RING, Sleeve plug
Hi to the group MY NEW 17 INCH HP LAPTOP AUDIO JACK TIP IS RIGHT CHANNEL SPKR RING 1 IS LEFT CHANNEL SPKR RING 2 IS GROUND SLEVE IS HOT MIC This has been a long week. Last week my 17 inch Toshiba lap top started random but serious failures. I reloaded it several times and even bought a new copy of Windows 8.1 but it failed again. I bought a new low priced 17 inch HP laptop from Best Buy, now have it fully loaded and so far it has been reliable. This morning I got the AF/MIC adaptor I home brewed to work. It is wired the same as the APPLE IPAD so the tip and first ring are speaker audio. The second ring is ground and the sleeve is the MICROPHONE hot lead. I had to home brew this as I could not find an adaptor that would fit my station layout. Parts were a problem to get out here in North Dakota so I ended up with $25 in parts and because I thought the adaptor was wired in the more sensible order of tip-ring-ring-gound I ended up reworking it many times. Again at least on my HP Laptop it is Tip and 1st ring for the speakers, second ring is ground and the sleeve is the hot side of the mic. I hope this information helps someone else avoid the problems I had.. Re: [Elecraft] Panadaptor for the KX3
Hi Pete I have been using ROCKY as a panadapter on my KX3 along with the iMic stereo USB sound adaptor. I find they help during a contest and in finding QSOs on a dead band. I recently added the NaP3 software to my station. ROCKY and NaP3 serve two different purposes in my station but the one advantage to ROCKY is it keeps the serial connection free to use with the N3FJP logging program during a contest. The NaP3 software allows many good things to happen such as frequency display on the computer screen, Clicking the mouse to jump to the frequency of a displayed signal, Copy RTTY, PSK or CW to a box on the screen, Program 16 F keys to control or send messages to the KX3, turn on the SUB receiver and let you listen to the SUB receiver on your computer sound card. Both these programs are free and they can both be on the computer but can not run at the same time. The only caution I have with either program is the sound card must support stereo and the 16 bit, 48 khz 2 channel option mus t be selected for that sound card in the operating system. 73 and good luck. I have overcome several problems the hard way so if you need help I will share what I know or tell you I have never tried that!!! Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Morse Practice
Hi Dick This is Ken W0CZ. I also wanted to make the VFO B area stay in text decode. I put TT1 in PF1 and TT0 in PF2. I can not see any difference as the VFO B still reverts back to the frequency after a short time. Re: [Elecraft] CW power output and remote tuners
Hi Mini Builder Kurt I run a K3 at 100 watts to a H-Gain Hy-Tower with a MFJ-927 tuner at the base. It is specified to match from 6 to 1600 ohms and handle 200 watts SSB and CW. It gets the 12 volts feed on the same coax as the RF signal. I have had my MFJ-927 for several years and in North Dakota it has had to work from 35 degrees below zero to 110 degrees above with no problem. I know you will get many more recommendations so I won't feel bad whatever you decide. Good luck and welcome back to ham radio. 73 Ken W0CZ w...@i29.net Sent from my iPad On Dec 20, 2013, at 8:44 PM, Mini Builder kiminicoop...@yahoo.com wrote: Background: I got into ham radio back in the 1970s, getting my license at age 12, then life moved on and my license expired. Now: I just passed the Technician and General test (no call sign yet) and have been looking at the state of the art - HOLY SMOKES have things changed! Anyhow, after a lot of research, I’ve decided to get a K3, but before that, I need an antenna. The K3 (with amp) outputs 100W. I’m pretty sure that I’m going with an inverted-L antenna, which requires a remote antenna tuner at its base. One promising remote tuner is the SG-230, but it can only handle “80 watts continuous.” My question: In CW mode, how much power does the K3 output? (assuming worst-case key down 100%). If the answer is “100W”, what remote tuner are you guys using with inverted-Lsand your K3s? Yes, I know that the K3 can have a built-in tuner, but I don’t think it can work with an inverted-L.
