Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and KPA1500 compatibility

2023-03-07 Thread w7aqk1

I think one of the the half-wave designed verticals Jim is thinking of is
the Cushcraft R8 and/or R9. MFJ now manufactures these antennas, but I have
one of the "original" models, and it worked very well for me -considering it
was something of a compromise. As Jim noted, years ago Ward Silver, N0AX,
and K7LXC, put together a very substantial review of various verticals, and
he gave the R8 (the R9 wasn't born yet) very good maks! That info may seem
somewhat dated, but still has serious relevance! Besides, it isn't just a
review of various antennas, it is an analysis of each antenna's performance!
I'd be using my R8 right now except when we moved from Tucson to Portland
some of the pieces went missing, and I haven't had a chance to resolved the
problem!!!

I also echo Jim's comments about Tom, N6BT, are also very appropriate.
I've seen Tom give marvelous presentations at at Pacificon, Yuma, and most
recently to one of our ham clubs here in Portland via Zoom! Tom has
created some of the most interesting and effective antennas around!

For that matter, I've also seen Jim, K9YC, do presentations at Pacificon,
and they were excellent as well. His website is like another handbook! If
Jim says it is good, it's good!

Cheers,

Re: [Elecraft] Collecting stamps vs. seashells -- and why this is not wildly O.T.

2022-06-12 Thread w7aqk1
I found Wayne's post to be both amusing and insightful. "Collecting" is a
big part of many hobbies, and ham radio is no exception. Nearly all of us
collect something, if not a lot of things, as part of our practice of this
hobby. We collect certificates indicating accomplishments like WAS, WAC,
DXCC, etc., we may become collectors of keys and paddles, or of "boat
anchors", and on and on. Certainly nearly every one of us has a collection
of QSL cards!

Before ham radio I collected a lot of things as a youth. Stamps were one
of the things I collected, and I was frequently purchasing packets of stamps
from companies I saw advertising in various magazines. This was kind of a
neighborhood thing, as several of us all did the same thing. Perhaps the
strangest thing we collected was a list of license plate numbers of out of
state cars passing through our little town of Bend, Oregon. The ultimate
objective was to hopefully have at least one identified plate from every
state! I came close!! It's ironic how similar this process is to
WAS-Delaware was one of the few states I never documented!

In my case, collecting became an early obsession in my ham radio life. I
was licensed at 13, and had managed to accumulate enough paper route money
to purchase a BC-348 receiver. However, initially I had no transmitter. My
two "Elmers" were quite aware of this problem, and at one of our local ham
club meetings they announced that they were going to donate all the
necessary parts, and expertise, allowing me to construct my own
transmitter-with considerable assistance from them!! That process included
making a chassis from sheet aluminum and winding a home made power
transformer large enough to power an 807! The whole process, from the time
my Elmer scribbled out a schematic on paper to completion, took about 10
days or so. One of my Elmers (W7GNJ) owned a bike shop (where the
construction process took place), and it's amazing how many parts he had
tucked away in corners and boxes there!

There was a "hitch" to this gift. My Elmers wanted to make sure that I
became reasonably competent as a CW op. So, they put a price on this gift.
I had to collect 150 QSL cards, signifying CW contacts, before I could fully
claim actual ownership of the transmitter!

The process took several months and 2 or 3 batches of QSL cards purchased
from either Walter Ashe or World Radio Labs (100 for $1)! Not everyone was
willing (or able) to exchange cards. Completing that requirement was more
rewarding to me than just about any other "certificate" I've ever gotten.
Also, I think I can say I did become reasonably competent at CW. At least
competent enough to be invited to become an NCS on the Oregon State CW Net.
I've been a 95% CW op ever since!

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Fires

2020-10-15 Thread w7aqk1
Amen to Walter's response. Sure, there are plenty of examples of things not
being done quite right, but the real truth is that things are so far out of
control it's almost amazing that anything got saved in the fires! Our
resources are being overwhelmed!!!

Until we get our heads screwed on right, and face up to the fact that global
warming is real, this kind of thing is going to continue. It's already too
late to make things get much better very quickly. The desert "burned up"
this summer from a record number of excessive heat days (over 100 F.),
California, and Oregon, and Washington burned up literally, and our southern
regions are getting slammed by historic numbers of hurricanes. This is not
just happening by "accident". It is self induced! We are destroying the
planet slowly but surely.

If you really want to better understand what is happening, and why, I
recommend you view David Attenborough's latest documentary "A Life On Our
Planet", which is currently available on Netflix. It's a superb explanation
of how we got where we are, why we are seeing all these fires and floods,
and what we have to do SOON! Ignore it if you will, but that doesn't solve
a thing! Making empty excuses doesn't help either.

The Creek Fire was burning through forests that were 80-90% bark beetle kill

in mountain wilderness. It is simply not possible to ?thin? that. From 2014
to 2018,

the number of dead trees in California increased from 11 million to 147
million.

Anyone who thinks there is a simple solution needs to think some more.

If you want to help, I already know of five Scout camps with major damage,

one in our council, near Big Basin. They will all need donations to rebuild.

[Elecraft] Elecraft] I'm building a personal email list

2020-06-20 Thread w7aqk1
C'mon Ken! Why would you post something like this without explaining the
purpose? Based on the responses so far I'm not the only one confused by
what you intention is. Seems to me you should have responded by now when
you saw the confusion you were causing.

For my part, I'm inclined to say "leave me out" please.

If you -don't- want to be included -do- say so. I won't be offended.
