Re: [Elecraft] Whats the deal with my K2/100

2010-02-24 Thread williamsonr
How about a known good watt meter post rig to confirm what the K2 is
indicating. Basic stuff (of course this will now start a debate over PEP vs.
avg., Tol. etc) but you get the idea - you will know that the output power is
really within reason.

Hello,

I just purchased a k2/100.I have been just turning down the power till it
says 10 I assume this is 10watts.I have been getting repeated reports that
they can't believe I'm running 10watts QRP. 1 guy just called me a liar all
together! Most these guys are not local but some are. So I thought I better
ask before arguing my QRP status. FYI turned the dial down on my K2/100 till
the display read 0.1 and got a 58 from Idaho to Montana on 160m the
operator would not believe my wattage. I do run a 160m loop for an antenna

So I thought I would ask around am I really doing a watt when the display
reads a watt?

Re: [Elecraft] New K3 NR algorithms

2009-08-20 Thread williamsonr
Joe, same here! Big difference in changing settings from F1-1 to F4-4 in one
continuous motion vs. your method with an exit NR and turn it back on.
Hummm? I also notice that if you use your method with a noticeable NR
improvement when switched on and then go into adjust mode the effect switches
back to the normal operation where the effectiveness is not as noticeable.
Looks like you have to adjust, turn off NR, then turn NR back on for each
setting. Maybe the guys missed some sort of reset between filter steps?

I finally got a chance to load up the new FW and try the new NR. Like
everyone else, I didn't notice much if any difference between F1-1 and
F4-4 while turning the knob. However, I found that there WAS a
difference if I dialed in a new setting, then turned NR off and back
on. In other words (in CW mode):

1) set NR to F1-1.
2) turn NR off, then back on. Notice the sound.
3) set NR to F4-4
4) turn NR off, then back on. Notice the sound.

When I do that, F4-4 is clearly more aggressive than F1-1.

G'day,

Broken here also. I have a multi tone QRM (digital junk) signal at
about 14213kHz and previously auto notch would take them all out in
a couple of seconds, now it doesn't touch them.

I tried notching an Ethernet signal at 14030kHz in SSB mode and only
when it was single signal, BW reduced to 150Hz did it try feebly to
do anything. More than one signal and it doesn't bother.

Manual notch is OK but as others have suggested, it could be
sharper.

All this observed on Spectrogram 16.

Yes, I am finding the same here - AGH !

The Manual notch is fine, however, although there is a slight
notching action in Auto it is virtually useless.

Re: [Elecraft] (OT) smoke test

2008-10-06 Thread williamsonr
I too have had one of these let go. I have a lamp near my reading chair that
used a 3 way Fluorescent lamp. While reading one day I began to hear a hissing
sound followed by a loud bang (like a fire cracker) and lights out. Upon
examination the class envelope of the tube near the base had overheated to the
point of flowing and eventually bursting. Not a great feeling - and again if I
had not been home at the time to pull the plug? Do these things have a
safety issue?

Many - not all - fluorescent lamps (I am assuming you are talking a
CFL , or Compact Fluorescent Lamp) have a small resistor used as a fuse
for the ballast. The ballast is in the base which supports the
discharge tube (the fluorescent portion). The ballast develops the
voltages needed to initially fire the tube (when cold) and limit the
current once the arc is initiated. It consists of several capacitors
and resistors as well as a few semiconductors. As the tube ages, the
current draw increases. At some point, it becomes too much, and the
ballast fails. To prevent a really catastrophic failure, a small
resistor (typically a 1/8 or 1/4 watt unit) is used as a fuse. Overload
destroys the resistor, cutting off the current. Why a resistor? They
are much less expensive than fuses, particularly at low current
ratings! The light from a CFL comes from a mercury-vapor arc inside the
tube, which emits large amounts of ultraviolet light. The phosphor on
the inside of the tube converts the ultraviolet energy into visible light.

I went over to the radio desk and looked at my equipment, both off. Still

Then my nose began to notice the smell we all dread. Something electrical

How often do Florissant bulbs fail this way?

I had the feeling that if I were not there a fire may have started.

Don,

I have found the same problem. I have the 6K, 2K8, 500, 400 and 250 Hz at
the moment. All three narrow filters show LO 0.85 and HI 2.15 in AM mode.
The BW shown during switching from HI to BW is 2.70 and not 500, 400 and 250
Hz as one would expect.

I am wondering why the center frequency *1.50 always remains constant for
all filters in SSB. When lowering the bandwidth to 1 KHz, signals can be
heard best at a lower shift of about 0.65 KHz. With my K2 I used the CW
audio filter at 550 Hz sometimes to copy SSB stations with adjacent strong
signals.

 Basic Parameters:

 K3/100 with KRX3 - MCU 2.38, FPF 00.02, DSP1 1.90, DSP2 1.90

 Main Board: FL2 = 2.8; FL3 = 2.1; FL4 = 400 Hz
 Sub RX Board: FL2 = 2.8; FL4 = 400 Hz

AM Rx Enabled for FL2 Main and FL2 Sub
 AM Tx not Enabled

I do NOT have a 6.00 AM Filter but am listening to AM through my 2.8
 roofing
filter - which sounds pretty good!

Action: Set Mode to AM. Displayed Mode changes to AM and displayed XFIL
changes to FL2 (which would be expected as I have a 2.8 in FL2 and it is
enabled for AM receive) with High showing 3.00 and Low showing 0.00.
 BW
 shows 6.00. FC shows 1.50.

 Surprise Action - Possible Bug

Now Tap XFIL button. Displayed XFIL stays on FL2 - but - bandwidth gets
very narrow. High now shows 2.20 and Low shows 0.80. FC still shows
1.50 and BW now shows 2.8. But, the graphic display of bandwidth narrows
 to
what would be shown if I had BW set to 400 Hz and the recovered AM audio
sounds like it! The BW showing 400 Hz is as it should be since 2.20 -
 0.80
 is 400 Hz.

Press and release NORM and I am back to where I started with Rx as it
should. Even if I Normalize I and II so all is well and then do the
 tap
 the narrowing scenario repeats!

 What I've Tried:

I've downloaded and sent All Firmware to K3 twice with the same result.

I've used the K3 Utility Version 1.1.6.3 to verify the filter settings
 that
I made in the Config Menu.

I've used the K3 Utility to set the filters and verified them in the
 Config
 Menu.

I don't know if this action occurred in previous versions as I've stayed
 up
with all Beta releases but frankly never tapped the XFIL button before
 while
 listening to AM.

 Questions:

Can anyone duplicate this seemingly strange action when in AM mode and
 tapping the XFIL button?

If it can't be duplicated, any idea(s) what I've got set incorrectly?

Is this simply a consequence of not having the 6 kHz AM filter and
 listening
 to AM with the 2.8?

 Thanks in advance. '73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH K3/100/KRX3 #83

To: elecraft reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net

I just started building a K2 and I have a couple of questions:

1. On the Control Board, when I installed capacitor C4 (0.47 microF,
monolithic cap 474), it somewhat overhangs and touches diode D1 (1N4148).
C4 is a rather thick (fat) capacitor and there doesn't seem to be any way to
install it without it overhanging and touching D1. Is this okay?

2. After getting through pg. 14 and most of the capacitors on pg. 15, I
noticed that my new diagonal cutters (bought from Radio Shack) are slightly
magnetic -- that is, they attract and pick up the clipped leads. I have of
course gotten rid of them -- but do you think that using those cutters could
have damaged anything? Fortunately, I had not gotten to any of the ICs or
transistors when I discovered this.

3. Why is it after getting all the way through pages 14, 15, and 16, it
appears that there are more components than ever remaining to be installed??
Do they procreate at night when I'm not looking?

[Elecraft] TX gain ?

2008-08-07 Thread williamsonr
Anyone seen this issue:

When adjusting 50 watt TX GN (gain) on each band, some bands do not allow
entire adjustment range to obtain 50 watts? i.e. while adjusting VFO A for
exactly 50 watts the VFO B display may move in the following steps: 46, 47, 52,
57 watts and skip over - for example - 48, 49, 50, 51, 53 etc. This results in
some band calibrations being above 50 watts and some being below due to the
unavailability of all the power settings? This seems odd.

[Elecraft] K3 - Strange problem on 10 Meter SSB with power out

2008-08-04 Thread williamsonr
If this has previously been discussed - please forgive me.
This weekend ten meters was open (as much as it could be at the bottom of a
cycle) and the 10-10 contest gave me a great opportunity to try out the 10
meter band on my recently completed K3 #1318(latest firmware). All seemed well
until I noticed that my power output on SSB was down as indicated on the K3
power meter and where I normally see 100 watt pep output on my tuners average
reading meter. So I grabbed my Bird 43 (with PEP option) and a dummy load.
Sure enough, only about 50 watts PEP even though the control on the K3 is at
100? Placed the K3 into tune and 95-100 watts out? Go back to SSB and now the
PEP power is back where it should be at approx 100 watts PEP. After a few more
SSB transmission - low power again(still connected to the Bird and dummy load).
This went on for a while as I checked and re-checked all of my mic and comp
settings. All other bands worked correctly. Power supply not current
limiting, all connections/cables good (connection to my stati
 o!
!
n ground verified), fresh battery in my studio mic, SWR on ten meter antenna
below 1.4:1 etc. etc. Took the LPA heat sink bottom cover off to make sure the
LPA transistors were making good thermal contact. (I had added a spot of heat
sink compound to each transistor during my assy process) There was a clear
outline of the TO-220 transistor and an even film of compound indicating good
pressure and contact. Put everything back together. Haven't seen the issue
again - yet? But I am not convinced I did anything to make it go away?

Anyone else had this experience?

[Elecraft] Firmware glitch on Xtal Filter selection?

2008-08-01 Thread williamsonr
I recently completed my K3 #1318 and updated to the latest firmware. On
another post to this group I recall someone (Dr. Garland?) asking about the
same issue I am seeing on my rig. I have set up xtal filters as follows FL1 -
open but assigned to FM (FM filter back ordered) FL2 2.7 kHz, FL3 1.8 kHz,
FL45 empty. I have set up the filter receive assignments per mode and the TX
filter assignments as per the manual. Here is what I am experiencing. Any
time I go into the config menu for any changes(and maybe the main menu as well
- can't recall) when I come out of the menu the filter auto selection during
DSP bandwidth changes acts odd (In SSB mode for sure, I haven't noticed other
modes). i.e. selecting a DSP bandwidth wider than 2.7 kHz now selects the FL1
position which is empty! Receiver goes dead! If I simply press the band up or
down button and try this again the rig now performs correctly and ignores FL1
that is not assigned to SSB or CW etc. All remains well until
 I!
!
go into the Config menu again???

[Elecraft] K3 Assembly issue with bottom Heat Sink cover!

2008-07-30 Thread williamsonr
Hey gang,

Just spent 4 hours assembling K3 s/n 1318 and all went well except for one
slight but potentially serious hardware problem. When installing the bottom
heat sink cover over the LPA I noticed that the required 4-40 x 1/4 screws
bottomed out in the standoffs under the TO-220 LPA transistors before they
would compress the cover to the transistors (and yes I can measure screw
lengths). This will leave a gap between the transistor and the heatsink and
not provide proper heat sinking! It is strange to note that one of the Manual
Errata changes was to point out that the heat sink cover was slightly thicker
than the other bottom cover. Wonder if this part has changed? Any way, I
added 3 #4 stainless steel flat washers under the screw heads and that allows
the screws to fully compress the heat sink against the transistors. For a
belts and suspenders fix I also added a dab of heat sink compound to the
transistors as well. I did not check the screws coming from the top side of
 t!
!
he LPA assy to see if the factory may have used the wrong/longer screws taking
up extra standoff threads. A #4 split washer could have also been left off of
this top side screw and create the same issue or tol. stack up of the parts?

Any way HEADS UP!

Manual Errata changes was to point out that the heat sink cover was
slightly thicker than the other bottom cover. Wonder if this part has
changed? Any way, I added 3 #4 stainless steel flat washers under the screw
heads and that allows the screws to fully compress the heat sink against the
transistors. For a belts and suspenders fix I also added a dab of heat sink
compound to the transistors as well. I did not check the screws coming from
the top side of t!
!
he LPA assy to see if the factory may have used the wrong/longer screws
taking up extra standoff threads. A #4 split washer could have also been
left off of this top side screw and create the same issue or tol. stack up
of the parts?

Any way HEADS UP!

Notification received today that my K3 is scheduled for delivery on July
the 29th. This is exactly 5 months to the day after order placed (Feb.
29th)- so much for the 4 month target! FM filter must be on back order as it
was not listed in the notification.

[Elecraft] Switching Supplies

2008-07-08 Thread williamsonr
Pardon me if someone has already pointed this out (I have not followed the
entire thread)- my past experience with linear supplies reveals an all too
often failure mode of either shorted pass transistors or blown control chips
(LM-723). In either case the output voltage from the supply can rise to the
unregulated DC filtered voltage (usually 20+ volts) and cook anything attached.
A fast and effective crowbar, if designed correctly, will clamp this voltage
before it destroys your expensive equipment. With switchers my experience has
been that one or more of the switching FETs or high speed diodes fail and the
supply just dies (no output). Which one would you rather have connected to
your brand new K3 if it failed?
