Some observations on the new beta release of the firmware. * The problem with excessive output power in DATA A has been greatly reduced. I'm seeing nearer 6W on a pure tone when 5W is selected (pro rata for other powers) and the audio level is adjusted for 4 bars.
* On AM with 10W selected my average reading meter shows about 2W with no modulation, kicking up to about 2.5W on speech. I have never used AM so I don't know if that is normal. * I could not reproduce the problem of SSB power variability mentioned by Mike, N5WNG. * The new commands for getting and setting the data submodes work fine and will be used in the next version of KComm. The KY command is now perfect for sending RTTY from the computer without a sound card using FSK D. (All we need now is a small PIC-based device mounted in a keyboard for true computer-less operation.) Using PSK D there is still one disappointment: all text is being converted to lower case for sending. I hope that is just an oversight. I appreciate that when using the paddle you can't specify the case, and lower case characters are sent more quickly, but all-lower-case just looks odd to me. I hope it will be possible to allow the text to be transmitted as sent - upper or lower case - when it originates from the computer rather than the key. ----- Julian, G4ILO.
