2013-04-09 Thread Mike K8CN
Those who've dealt with issues in USB to serial port conversion will
appreciate Bill Wong's commentary in Electronic Design:

Sigh. I've got a Liberty Basic app that talks via RS-232 to a Microchip
controller to run the [currently] 33 irrigation valves for my wife, The
Kamikaze Gardener. All is well with a real serial port from this
desktop. All is not well with at least two USB-Serial adapters from
here or either of our laptops. I also tried the one from Elecraft
[Prolific] which works fine everywhere else.

Clearly, all serial ports are not created equal.

Fred,

That statement should read not all USB to serial *adapters* are created
equal - particularly those intended for consumer (PC) use.
Commercial ones usually do not use the term adapters, but will tend to
use converters instead.
