Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter Worth it?
I have one in my K3s and use it a fair amount. I'm also a DXLabs software user, so having 2 meters integrated into one radio with HF - 6m works great. Besides working FM repeaters and Winlink packet, I run an external 200 watt amplifier for SSB. There again, the integration with DXLabs software and rotor control makes using a VHF beam really easy. It's internal to the K3s so no extra gear on the desk. It performs well enough for me. I do have the reference lock option installed in the K144XV and the high stability TXCO installed in the K3s. There are better transverters out there, but this one makes for quite convenient operation. I do have it on my KX3 and the K2 drives a nice transverter if the sudden need arises. 73 AB7CE -Original Message- From: Edward via Elecraft Sent: Wednesday, August 19, 2020 7:56 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter Worth it? When tuned to 144-146 MHz per Elecraft instructions, the XV144 transverter will also operate in the 146-148 MHz and nearby MARS frequencies although with decreased sensitivity and output power. [Elecraft] 2m Transverter
Hello - I was thinking about adding 2m capability to my K3. Can anyone tell me if the XV144 External Transverter is all I need to do this, or are there additional cables, filters, etc... also required for this upgrade? My intention is to use it for two meter cw via local repeaters which I can easily hit with ten watts. Currently have only the stock 2.7 filter. 73, Dave __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter
The XV144 works very well with the K3, Dave, and you don't need anything else, not even the KXV3A which is necessary for the internal K44XV transverter. The K3 with its stock 2.7 kHz filter is fine unless you wish to use FM in which case you would need the KFL3B-FM 13 kHz filter. I do not know how you would use CW via a repeater. We do not have CW repeaters here in the UK. I see there is someone currently selling a XV144 in the UK for 200ukp which is a very good price. 73 David In a recent message, Dave Buchanan kf5...@yahoo.com writes I was thinking about adding 2m capability to my K3. [Elecraft] 2m Transverter
Hello Dave - What I omitted to say in my msg on the reflector was that you WILL need the KXV3 installed in your K3. When I mentioned not needing the KXV3A I was making an assumption that your K3 already has the original KXV3 installed. Apart from the power cable the only additional cables you will need are a pair of BNC-BNC cables to connect the XV144 to the K3. You can drive the K3 with just 1mW of power from the XV144. I hope that helps. 73 de David G4DMP -- + - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + | David M Pratt, Kippax, Leeds. | | Website: http://www.g4dmp.co.uk | + - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

actually, you *could* do it without the KXV3(A) .. just configure the XV144 for high-level common IF and run it with a watt or two ;) de w1rt/john On Sun, Oct 21, 2012 at 10:33 AM, David Pratt da...@g4dmp.fsnet.co.uk wrote: Hello Dave - What I omitted to say in my msg on the reflector was that you WILL need the KXV3 installed in your K3. Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter
Dave, I don't want to assume anything, so I have to ask you why in the world you'd want to do CW over a repeater? Are the repeater owners hip with the idea? Thirty years ago a group of us tried to run CW practice on an unused local repeater, with the owners permission and the support of the local club, and that went over like a lead balloon. Not sure it would be any different now. 73, Scott, N9AA On 10/21/12 10:54 AM, Dave Buchanan wrote: Hi David, Thanks for the response. This is exactly the kind of information which is helpful. Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter keeps switching back to 6m
If it happened that the switching back from 2 Meters to 6M occurred during the contest you can credit you K3 knowing that the 6M band was open for lots of E-skip and was reminding you, like the Chick Filet commercial to 'Eat mor chickin or Work more 6 Meters. We ran K3 radios at the more 6M positions at the K8GP multi-op station in the VHF contest. Being up high were heard many very strong locals, one of them, W3IP with a K3, only a mile or so up the road running high power. Our K3s worked great from our Mt. Weather site in FM19bb. We worked over 850 stations in 249 grids on the Magic Band, including many European stations. Seriously, hope that you can figure out what is causing the switching problem. Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter keeps switching back to 6m
This was solved quickly by changing the frequency range of my NAP3 software to include the upper range of the 2m band. Unfortunately I was consumed by honey do's yesterday so I spent minimal time behind the K3. Of course I had more free time with the radio on Saturday but the band was more or less dead out here in So Cal during that time. Thus why it is called the magic band (I also call it the Retirement band, hihi, because you need to be retired to really enjoy all the openings especially here out in the western US). This reflector is awesome and certainly very solution oriented. I had the issue resolved in a matter of minutes. Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter keeps switching back to 6m
Are you running NaP3? I encountered the same thing and found you need to go into the NaP3 setup and set the highest frequency to 148 MHz. It's 54 by default, so the rig control function of the software will always QSY you to 54.000 until you change it. If you're not running NaP3, perhaps whatever rig control software you use needs a similar setup change. 73... Randy, W8FN On 06/09/2012 16:02, Ham Radio wrote: Quick question.
