None of those locations look to be great golf destinations HI! Imaging
the surprise of the enterprising airport person takes it and finds a
bunch of ham gear instead of spendy golf clubs!

An idea definitely worth looking into.

The foam is cut into small squares that you remove so the radio would
fit in the middle of the foam. I believe there are 3 or 4 layers of
foam so the foam will encase the radio and whatever accessories you

Re: [Elecraft] Carrying case for a K3?

2011-03-22 Thread Ralph Parker
I have used the Pelican 1510, but I had to remove the K3 handle, and even
then only had 1/2" to spare - a snug fit with a little token foam. I
certainly wouldn't ship it that way as checked baggage. The 1510 does have
room for a p/s, headset, etc., in the long dimension. I carried it onto the
big airplanes (tnx goodness for the wheels), but I had to give it to
baggage handlers for one short leg on a Twin Otter. Otherwise, I would have
used my Rose case, which is a much better choice if you are able to carry
it on every flight, IMHO.

I agree. While the website says it meets carry on regulations, it clearly
doesn't. So, if flying with this as carry-on luggage is planned, the
Pelican 1510 is a safer bet. It's about $60 more. But that might not be
a big deal if it saves you from paying baggage fees because it's a little
too big to carry on.

Re: [Elecraft] Carrying case for a K3?

2011-03-22 Thread David Christ
The usual carryon max is 22 x 14 x 9 which is 45 unified inches.
The Pelican just makes this but the Seahorse is 5 inches over. The
overhead bins in the larger planes are made for the Pelican sized
roll-on. The Seahorse might not fit quite as easily. I have rarely
been challenged at the check in counter or the gate but have been
asked to slide my bag in their sizing frame. In Frankfort the
scanners had a hole in the front so if your bag didn't fit through
the hole you didn't get through security.

Not to discourage you from the Seahorse but you do take your chances
small as they may be.

That case looks almost identical to the pelican. 1510. The dimensions
for the Pelican are 22.00" x 13.81" x 9.00". The Seahorse is 23.96" x
16" x 10.01" which is a few inches bigger. You might want to check with
your airlines to see if the Seahorse can be carried on. With everyone
dragging all their belongings inside the cabin of the planes instead of
checking bags the airlines have been getting more particular with what
you bring on.

BTW charging for bags was stupid. Now the luggage hold is empty and the

It's a hard case like the Pelican (but less expensive), comes with or
without foam and looks like it'll have room for the K3, P3, power supply,

Rose made one for me for my K2 which I've been using for SOTA summit

Li-ion battery, miscellaneous jumpers and adapters, and my log. Makes a

Jim, thank you very much. The inquiry to Rose is in progress! :-)

Rose Kopp, XYL of Ken Kopp, K0PP, makes very nice soft cases designed
for carry-on. One version of this case, which my neighbor, N3ZZ and I
bought, holds a K3 and a laptop. We also bought them with extra velcro
strips that allow two cases to be attached, so that two K3s can count as
a single carry-on. These cases are hand made, and are nicely finished.
They are NOT designed to be checked luggage. Cost is quite reasonable,
and varies slightly with options.

Many members of this list have bought Rose's cases. Several are
contesters who use them to travel to DX locations.

I just bought the Pelican 1510, hard case with foam and the lid
organizer. The foam uses small blocks that you can pop out to fit most
applications. I have not tried to put the k3 and accessories in the
case yet. It has rollers and a handle and is supposed to be carry on size.

Lance, thanks for the background.

Right now, my main goal is just to pack it in something I can carry
around with me but not necessarily on a plane (but if my setup can
serve this role, fantastic).

I guess I should be more specific about my requirements for storage
than having people shout random solutions:

- K3 unit with KAT3 (so I don't need a separate ATU, I sure hope not)
- Gamma Research HPS-1A supply
- Some portable battery supply (I have not decided yet)
- Buddistick Deluxe Package
- Power chords, feedline, MH2 mic, cables, miscellaneous smaller
items, maybe a smallish wattmeter, etc.

Future directions:
At some point, I'd like to add a Netbook with power supply in that mix
with possibly a P3 or LP-PAN. Sigh. It never ends. I already have
a large backback for computer stuff but something like the P3 or
LP-PAN would be a *nice to have* with the gear above.

The goal is to be able to pack up everything I need to deploy remotely
or bring with me on vacation (example, in the summer, I will be in
North Carolina for a week and I would like to operate. Be great if I
had some kind of bag that could help me organize everything neatly).

Hope this make sense,

Re: [Elecraft] Carrying case for a K3?

2011-03-21 Thread Lance Collister
Hello Alexander,

This is a problem I also am currently wrestling with. The K3 (depending on
options) weighs around 12 pounds by itself. If you buy a good solid state
switching power supply such as a 300w Meanwell HRP-300-12, you can get by
adding only another 2-3 pounds if you include the power cord.

For DOMESTIC carry-on luggage, that is not so bad, and you can easily fit it in
a
suitable carry-on bag. For my last couple of DXpeditions, I lined the two
roll-on carry-on bags for my wife and I with a foam pad from backpacking trips
and
other foam pieces as shown in this photo:

http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/K3CarryOn.JPG

The amp and wattmeter are in the bag on the left. The K3, switching power
supply,
box with the PR6, and some thin odds and ends are in the bag on the right.
Note
that everything was wrapped in plastic bags to waterproof the equipment, and
carefully padded, since there were two flights in smaller planes where they had
to
be checked as baggage. I had no problems with this arrangement on two separate
DXpeditions.

HOWEVER, the total weight (including the roller-bags) of each of these was
around
25 pounds. Many international airlines only permit 15 pounds TOTAL WEIGHT for
personal carry-on luggage, and they also have much smaller acceptable
dimensions.
Since my current switching power supply and K3 already exceed 15 pounds
before
adding any packing material or a bag, this is a real challenge. The amplifier
and
wattmeter are in the same situation. Obviously, the larger switching power
supply
for the amplifier will have to continue to be shipped in a suitcase in checked
baggage.

I will probably have to invest in new MeanWell power supplies to shave off a
few
pounds, but still have the obstacle of needing to find some very durable but
lightweight carry-on bag that will provide enough protection to be able to be
checked, but still be small enough to meet the small size and weight
requirements
of new international airlines.

It probably means no roller bags at all, and use of much smaller hard sided
carry-on bags. More of the fragile equipment (wattmeter, all power supplies,
preamp, etc.) will have to go into checked baggage suitcases. All I can say is
that it doesn't take much of a case to bring your K3 up to 15 pounds and exceed
allowable international carry-on sizes!

I have seen some small cases in airports that look like they would work, but I
have not found a place to get one yet. Please keep me posted as to what you
come
up with! TNX and VY 73, Lance

Re: [Elecraft] Carrying case for a K3?

2011-03-21 Thread Lew Phelps K6LMP
I recently acquired a padded carrying case (not hard-sided like a Pelican) that
suits my needs for carrying a K3 plus numerous accessories. It costs $21.95
from Surplus Center of Nebraska. The interior measurements are approximately 6
x 16 x 13, with 1/2" padding on all sides. It's a dark blue heavy nylon. I
can put my K3, a power supply, headset, J-38 key, breakout box, a large
external power/swr meter, cords, connectors, a Powerpole distribution box, and
other goodies into the bag, with room to spare. I wouldn't want to check the
bag as luggage without putting it inside a protective box with padding. It fits
easily into an overhead bin on a plane. It meets my needs very well, and the
the price is hard to beat. see:

[Elecraft] Carrying case for a K3?

2011-03-21 Thread Alexander Sack
Hello:

I just bought a K3 (waiting for it to arrive by tomorrow afternoon)
and I'd like to use it as a semi-portable rig. I don't mean I am
going to be mounting in my truck but I'd like to it on trips with me.
I was just curious what you guys to for an all-in-one case? (K3,
power supply, any accessories, etc. etc.).

Any suggestions would be appreciated?
