[Elecraft] Configuring DXLabs Suite, Win4K3 and K3 for FT8, etc.
Brian: I suggest you get WSJT-X working as a stand-a-lone application before getting the other applications running. This will allow you to get the audio levels for RX and TX configured. And will allow you to use CAT control for the radio and PTT mode. DX Labs and Win4K3 can come on board later. It is much easier to debug software system integration one step at a time. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 11/10/2021 12:31 PM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: Message: 18 Date: Mon, 8 Nov 2021 19:22:02 -0500 From: Brian Deuby To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Configuring DXLabs Suite, Win4K3 and K3 for FT8 etc. Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed I'm interested in getting my feet wet in WSJT digital modes, but don't know how to configure my K3, DXLabs Suite and Win4K3 to do this. Re: [Elecraft] Configuring DXLabs Suite, Win4K3 and K3 for FT8 etc.
If you're just going to use WSJT-X (or JTDX, which is what I use) for non-contest / casual operation on the main FT8 frequencies, I don't think using the split/fake-it option is necessary. Contesting is a different thing. To get started with casual use, just use the TX/RX split option on the main UI. I've also had mixed results using JDTX with a serial pairing emulator (I use Eterlogic, but have tried several) and Win4K3. It mostly works fine, but I have noticed that over time the TX/RX timing sequence starts to become "off"...I've only done light troubleshooting on this so far, but I know it's not a CPU horsepower problem. So when I'm doing JTDX, I usually just use the HRDLogbook host and leave Win4K3 shut down. My 2C. I've been quite happy letting wsjt-x operate in split mode with my K3. The only downside I've found is having to manually turn split off to make some changes when operating in other modes. I hope Jim wil explain his recommendation. 73 Bill AE6JV On 11/10/21 at 3:26 PM, j...@audiosystemsgroup.com (Jim Brown) wrote: Don't tell WSJT-X to configure your operating mode, do that manually. Re: [Elecraft] Configuring DXLabs Suite, Win4K3 and K3 for FT8 etc.
Brian, Everything Jim said, plus a couple additional recommendations: 1- I would start by using WSJT-x by itself for a little while, configured to talk directly to the K3, without DXLab Commander or Win4K3 running. This will allow you to get familiar with WSJT-x, its configuration, making contacts, etc. without anything else getting in the way. Make sure the computer’s time is accurate using a time synchronization utility like Meinberg or similar. The built in logging in WSJT-x will create a ADIF file that you can import to DXKeeper later, so don’t worry about manual logging. 2- once you’re comfortable with the above, read https://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/GettingStartedwithK1JTModes and follow the instructions. If you already have Commander talking to your K3 through Win4K3, just keep that configured as usual. WSJT-x can be configured to use DXLab Commander as it’s ‘radio’ per the instructions in that link above, so nothing needs to change for rig control if Commander and Win4K3 are already working for you. 73 de W0ZF On Mon, Nov 8, 2021 at 6:22 PM Brian Deuby wrote: > I'm interested in getting my feet wet in WSJT digital modes, but don't > know how to configure my K3, DXLabs Suite and Win4K3 to do this. On 11/8/2021 4:22 PM, Brian Deuby wrote: Can anyone direct me to a good source(s) of information on this? What digital modes? For WSJT modes, study their documentation. For all digital modes, use Digital A, feed audio from computer to Line Input (Mic Gain becomes Line In Gain). Adjust audio levels so that CMP shows 4 bars flashing 5 when transmitting. Don't bother with using control lines for PTT, use VOX, set VOX gain so that rig keys reliably. To decode the weakest signals, set audio gain from rig to computer so that when receiving, green bar at left side of WSJT-X is as high as possible without turning Red. Don't tell WSJT-X to configure your operating mode, do that manually. Set Split to Fake It. All you need rig control to do is set and read TX frequency. Make sure that all the equipment in your station, including the computer, is properly bonded -- chassis-to-chassis, and to all the grounds in your home (rods, coax entry, power, telco, CATV), that all end-fed antennas have an effective counterpoise, and that there are effective common mode chokes at the feedpoint of all antennas. All of this is good engineering practice for all modes, most of it is required by law, is critical for lightning protection, and minimizes RF feedback (RF in the shack) that can interfere with good operation. For proper bonding, study N0AX's ARRL book on the topic, to which I contributed, and/or the pdf of slides for talks I've done at Pacificon, Visalia, and to several ham clubs. http://k9yc.com/GroundingAndAudio.pdf Can't help with configuring those other programs. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
