Plus, it would do wonders for the noise figure :)

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for August 23rd & 24th, 2009

2009-08-23 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Twenty meters was faint while forty meters had stronger signals and more
storm noise. Luckily Tom was available before he sacrificed some beast to the
BBQ gods! I imagine he is in his Lazy Boy right now digesting! I wonder if he
roasted marshmallows afterwards? Weather has turned cooler over much of the
country except for a report of 90 degree weather in Colorado. Hopefully their
fire danger is not too bad. Here it had dropped to the lowest rating but has
gone back up to moderate. I have been seeing a few deer lately and on
Wednesday saw an unspotted fawn by my truck. Soon I saw her mom a few yards
behind her nibbling and watching. The last three nights a very industrious
mouse has awakened me multiple times while storing seeds in my closet. I do
miss Sam, especially when he was younger and able to munch those mousies. I
need to go cat shopping.
There were four new folks today. Each was checking in a K3 of various
vintages from brand new to a 1xx model. This net is still open for K1s, K2s,
and KX1s too. I did get a couple K2s and a KX1 but no K1. Pete uses his every
now and then to keep me on my toes and there are a few others who check in
every so often. It may simply be the limited propagation we are having lately.
However, even the Maunder Minimum terminated at some point. I expect those
K1s will still be working in a few hundred years. Now if only everything else
would last so long! Hmmm... forgot about diffusion in ICs. Maybe our rigs
won't be working all that long after all. A dim memory tells me diffusion
rates in silicon are on the order of tens of years. Maybe if we store our rigs
in large Dewars filled with liquid helium they will last a little longer :)

If there are any errors in the above lists please email me. My ISP problems
have been solved but they did dump a lot of mail in the process. So, if you
mailed me anything between last Saturday and the following Tuesday it is gone.
But, since I use multiple addresses for the Elecraft Reflector my report did
get posted. I just could not read it. Hopefully the mirror they put into
place will help eliminate any future problems with the CS UNM system.
My, the sun is setting early these evenings. Not even 7:45 PM and the sun
is below the horizon. Considering I live on a ridge I get a few more minutes
of light than those below in the valley. Forecasts are for cooler weather all
week. I'll keep collecting all the wood I have been cutting and splitting
since April. Because I don't have access to those piles with my truck I get to
enjoy hauling load after load with my wheelbarrow. It is good for me to
meditate as I push over hill and dale with a large load of wood. I keep
thinking of the equation: how many times does wood heat me? The answer is:
each time I handle it and then again when I burn it. This provides me an
indeterminate number since some wood gets more handling than others. All I
know is it keeps me fit and then warm. I wonder what it will be like when I
turn 70?
   Until next week stay well,
  73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)
