[Elecraft] GPS Disciplined Oscillator to loan or sell?

2012-10-23 Thread Chip Stratton
I would like to fine tune my KX3 for maximum frequency stability, and also
calibrate my frequency counter (and get some idea of its warm-up drift).

So, anyone willing to lend out a Trimble Thunderbolt or similar GPSDO? I
would even buy one if someone was ready to let one go.

Thanks and 73,
Chip

Chip,

You can find some used units on sale here
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313_nkw=trimble+thunderbolt_sacat=0_from=R40
but they're pricey. I bid $50 for this one here, and won the auction.
That was about 15 months ago. I'm not really ready to live without it
though.

I'd look for a newer one, with an integrated power supply and a
passive splitter. The K3 here is connected full-time and the Tbolt is
running 24/7, powered as the rest of the station from solar power and
an Optima D type battery. The basic unit shown on the eBay site
requires +/-12VDC and +5VDC. I had to build a 3-output 12V input
power supply from commercial DC-DC (Murata) converters, in order to
use the Trimble.

Most lab test equipment has a 10 MHz input for a reference frequency.
With a splitter, you could run your K3 on the ref full-time, and still
have an output for your test equipment at the bench.

It's pretty handy to have a 50 ppt freq ref around, at least if you're
serious about measurement accuracy. You'll want a good roof-mount
antenna. The Lady Heather Disciplined Oscillator program is good for
monitoring, and there is Trimble software at their support site for
set up and control.

Maybe someone on the list wants to sell a unit? Persevere!

Thanks to all who replied with advice or hardware to offer. A list member
has presented a nice Thunderbolt package that could not be passed up -
thanks Chuck.
