I have a buddy interested in a K2. He wasn't until I loaned him mine
while I was on vacation. He was luke-warm before he borrowed the rig.
He borrowed, he listened, loved the receiver and is considering a
purchase. Sweet. But he's mostly an SSB op and stumbles a bit at the
mixed reviews of the K2 on SSB.

How about a K-series rig optimized for SSB? Start with a K2 and do a
few mods ...

  - Turn the Keyer speed pot into an IF shift pot.
  - Turn the Power pot into a mic gain pot.
  - PO would be a menu selection.
  - Keyer speed would be a menu selection.
  - Choice of narrow or wide Xmit Xtal filters (switchable? Build-time
choice?).
  - New variable RX Xtal filter optimized for SSB bandwidths.
  - Optional fixed narrow CW filter.
  - Optional speech processor, menu controlled.
  - Optional DSP continues to provide notch & NR.

Base price of, say $729?

By catering to the SSB crowd, you'd be able to add K4 sales without
losing K2 sales. By basing the design on the already great K2, you
minimize design costs and risk.

Take the 2 out of K2, spin it backwards to emphasize the other "half" of
ham radio and you have a KS for SSB.
