Thank you for so many responses. I appreciate it.

I took the radio out of the case to have a look.

I think I will let the radio sit quietly for a while then try 
again-carefully checking each control setting-and if it doesn't 
function send it off to one of the recommended repair facilities. (Or 
maybe I'll pursue AM...)

By all means use ICOM AMERICA if Bellevue, WA.

Have a friend who just received his '735 back after a
very satisfactory repair ... I sold him the radio some
years ago.

BTW.  I've owned two of 'em and think they're fine radios.
