[Elecraft] K1 is a bit loose?
The knobs on my K1 have a bit of a loose feel to me. Also, when I press the display button (upper left) the display itself shifts just a bit. Should I disassemble and check the various fasteners to be sure they're tight or is this just the way the rig is? No I did not build it. I did take the VFO knob off and snugged down the 10-turn pot's mounting nut. It was a bit better after that. And the batter carrier is just loose in there. When you put the top on it snugs down but take the top off and the metal bracket is relatively free to move. Is this normal? Hi Keith, I found my front-panel moved a bit when I pushed the display button as well. I ended up securing it by adding a little square of sort of rubber material, to the edge of the 8-way connectors that join the top of the front panel assembly to the top of the K1. The material I used was adhesive on one side like a label, and less than 1/8 thick. It is nice and snug now between the front panel and the 8-way connector, so when pressing on the Display and WPM+ buttons (or any other buttons for that matter) there is no movement at all of the underlying circuit board. I haven't have any problem with looseness of the knobs, all I can suggest there is to make sure both the locking slugs are tightened on each knob. If the pots themselves are loose on the circuit board, that's another matter entirely. Elecraft later went to a pot design that had a much greater amount of shaft support. I had to replace my AF gain pot when it got scratchy in 2001. The replacement was one of the improved versions. I liked it so much that I ordered another and replaced the original RIT pot too. So, I'd suggest ordering two new pots and replacing those in your early K1. Also, when I press the display button ... the display itself shifts just a bit. This problem comes from less than tight contact of the back four corners of the front panel PCB with the front face of the four aluminum case fastener blocks upon which they rest. This can also cause a resonance rattle at certain audio frequencies when using the internal K1 speaker. I solved this problem by putting a small piece of foam tape on the front face of each of the case fasteners. Now the corners of the FP PCB rest firmly against the foam tape covered fasteners, and as a side benefit the front panel push buttons have a much firmer feel because the PCB isn't flexing as the buttons are pushed. You may also need to tighten the screws associated with the front panel PCB standoff spacer. There was a thread on this relating to the main tuning knob a while back. The suggestion was to cut a felt washer and put this behind the main knob. Smaller than the main tuning knob of course.
