[Elecraft] K2 Almost Finished - Then Disaster

2011-03-19 Thread Al Gold
I almost had my K2 finished having send and receive on all but 12,15 and 17
meters. Decided to redo the 15 and 17 meter low pass torroidal inductors
and after I finished had no receive at all and no transmit. Started
troubleshooting and the transceiver, which has randomly come up with 080
info warnings began to come up with them more frequently. Additionally, if
you tried to change bands, it would display my power out information even
though I am not transmitting. I attacked the 080 problem using one of the
articles on the website and everything checked out ok. So I decided to
reset the radio with the 456 method. After that, nothing made any sense on
the displays. I started checking all the pinouts on the control board to
the rf board and my hand slipped, killing the radio - no displays, no
relays, etc. I tracked down the problem to a bad 5 volt regulator on the
control board and replaced that. Got five volts back but the regulator
(7805) heated up quickly and the voltage went down to 2 volts. The MCU
also got red hot in a few seconds. I ordered the firmware kit from Elecraft
which would give me a new MCU and IOC. With the MCU removed, the 5 volt
regulator is fine - doesn't overheat and stays at 4.99 volts. I hace
checked all resistors on the control board and front panel and everything
else seems fine. I think the MCU and IOC replacements should solve my
problem. Any suggestions??

2011-03-19 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Allan,

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes.

It sounds like you had the MCU chip plugged in backwards!

The info 080 message says that the MCU cannot communicate with one or
more of the firmware chips on the options (and includes the KIOC chip on
the RF Board).

The no receive is a different problem - it is not related to the failure
of the MCU nor the Info 080 messages.
