Re: [Elecraft] K3 ACC connector and VGA cable

2010-01-17 Thread ww2r2
Be cautious on using VGA cables. I bought 2 a few years ago which didnt have
pin 9 connected which unfortunately is one of the band signals from the K3,
So I made my own with 2 connectors and a lenght of multicore cable

I just hit a similar snag this weekend, my cables unlimited PCM-2250 15 pin
Y cable adaptors also have no pin 9, which means they are only usable if I
dont use band data

Hi,

I am starting to get the my K3 integrated into my station.

I am thinking about building a breakout box to bring several of the pins on
the ACC connector out to RCA jacks.

I was wondering if I just hack off one end of a standard VGA cable if the
cable has enough wires in it to get to all the pins on the ACC connector?
Or, get a 15 pin VGA connector and make up my own cable?

Comments from the K3 community?

Below is the email from the Yahoo reflector in October. I bought a
Y-adaptor from the first source, and it worked fine for my Top Ten Devices
Band Decoder and a PR6. It was $2.40 and was less than $5 including
shipping.

The "elegant" solutions are the full DB15HD Y cables
available from:

   www.cablewholesale.com p/n 10H1-27708
   www.altex.com Philmore 70-568

or one of the breakout boards from:

   http://www.winfordeng.com/products/cat_brk.php
   the BRKSD15HDM-C is particularly interesting.

The alternative is to make up your own cable to a
box with a DB9 or DIN8 for "Band data" and some
RCA/3.5 mm jacks for FSK, PTT, ALC and Inhibit.

The breakout box with RCA Phono jacks is a good approach and used by many.

I prefer to use VGA Y-Adapter cables to combine whichever single-function
cables I need for a given setup. I either make or buy the single-function
cables, e.g., FSK/PTT, KRC2, Top-Ten Decoder, etc.

As K6KR noted, many of the VGA Y-Adapters and other VGA cables have missing
connections or shorted connections that work fine in the intended VGA
applications. So, you have to carefully check the continuity of VGA
adapters/cables for the K3 ACC application. I've been through a lot of VGA
Y-Adapters and only found one source with all the connections made properly.

For cable, I use < URL:http://www.winford.com/products/ext15hd.php >

For a breakout board, I use <
URL:http://www.winford.com/products/brk15hd.php > and I see they now
have a smaller one < URL:http://www.winford.com/products/brksd15hd.php >

Someone posted a link to some Y-cables here a few months back and I
obtained a couple, but I don't recall the vendor at the moment.

No connection to Winford, just a satisfied customer, YMMV, etc.

2010-01-17 Thread Matt Zilmer
Using a VGA cable probably won't bring all of the signals out to the
end of the pigtail since the VGA standard doesn't use off of them.
There are commerical cables using the DB-15 high density connector
that bring out all pins, or you can build your own.

It's more fun to build your own. Digikey and Mouser both have the
15-pin male connectors, and they'll also have good quality control
cables.

The standard VGA cables may omit or combine key pins. Some people have
found Y connectors with all 15 pins connected. There is a small
commercial device that has a 15 pin connector attached to a PC board
with screw connectors for all 15 wires. I'm away from my PC now but
these are discussed in the archives of this forum.
