[Elecraft] K3 Requested Change Ideas

2012-11-21 Thread Ed Kuebert
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

After using my K3 for about 5 months I have some requested minor changes to
facilitate operation.
1. The lock function is great as I often reach for the wrong dial when working
split; however, I often forget I have it on. It would be beneficial to
automatically set it to "OFF" when the band is changed.
2. The CW during SSB is a good function particularly on 6 meters, but it will
normally transmit on the wrong sideband. Could the CW during SSB selection be
altered to add CW-REV as a selection so you would have OFF, CW, and CW-REV? Or,
just make the selection OFF and CW-REV.
3. Make the CW during SSB function work from both the KEY and PADDLE inputs.
Now it only works from the PADDLE input.
4. Could a signal be sent to the KPA500 to put it into STANDBY if the mode is
changed to TX DATA- DATA A as this data mode generally uses low power?

THANKS for listening and your great support.

Ed, K5EK

Seeing your point #3 makes me wonder what version of firmware you are
running.
cause mine works with both straight key and paddle. I'm running 4.60 beta
but I believe it this has been working for quite a while??

3. Make the CW during SSB function work from both the KEY and PADDLE inputs.
Now it only works from the PADDLE input.

It does not matter if one transmits "on the wrong sideband" - even if
one is in USB the CW is close enough that the other station will hear
you.

It works just fine from the key input - I use it all the time. One
needs to enable VOX (semi break-in) in CW before enabling CW in SSB
and selecting SSB.

Absolutely *not*! Although there are those who use low power for
various data modes - just as there are those who use QRP for non-data
modes - there is no requirement to do so. Having 200W for some MFSK
and PSK modes or 500 W for AFSK and JT modes is quite useful when
conditions are marginal.

On 6m, select cw mode and then _hold _the alt button. It will change to
cw-rev which is then the "right" sideband. It's magic!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Requested Change Ideas

2012-11-21 Thread K7MDL
Note that you have to go into CW mode to set up your preferences, then switch
to SSB. I noted changing between CW and CW-REV made no difference - i.e.
the tone received on a monitor radio remained the same. When in SSB the
tone is correctly placed at your pitch frequency. (I am running latest
versions of firmware, 4.60 right now).

So what you can do while in CW mode is set your PITCH which will change
pitch others hear. SSB will honor that change and send that "new tone" to
your listener. So if you are on a fixed frequency, say 50.125 in SSB mode,
you can set the pitch to 300 and all others exactly on your frequency will
hear a 300Hz note.
