[Elecraft] K3 SSB problem

2014-05-03 Thread William Stewart
I have seen a problem when using the K3 in SSB. While trying to work a
DX station on 10M, waiting for the next chance to call, something causes
the K3 to stop transmitting on SSB. The PTT still works as normal and
keys the K3 and the power amplifier. If I change to CW, it transmits as
usual. I found the only way to correct this was to cycle power on the rig.

I finally was able to contact the DX station and had a brief exchange
with him, but as I was signing off I could hear the K3 fading out - then
no transmit power at all.

I have reloaded all the firmware (which was current).

I have been using this K3 for 3 years and I have never seen this problem
before.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill K5EMI

[Elecraft] K3 SSB problem

2014-02-13 Thread Troy,w6hv
My K3 wont transmit on SSB. It would when first purchased (recently, assembled,
used from friend). I’ve been using it on CW but wanted to check into a SSB net.
I’m very new at using the K3 so hoping for op err. Been through the manual and
settings and can’t figure it out. An external PEP wattmeter shows an occasional
1-2 watt jump at first keying the XMIT then nothing. Still works fine on CW.
Any guidance would be appreciated. The latest firmware is installed.

Troy,

I'd first check the MIC SELection (front or rear or line in) to be sure
it is correct for your setup, then MIC BIAS to be sure it is on or off
as required by your microphone.

Then set the MIC GAIN for 4-5 bars of ALC. If you are getting this but
no transmit power, contact support. If you are not getting 4-5 bars of
ALC and the selection and bias are correct, check your microphone and/or
try the other mic jack (front or rear as appropriate). A common
computer headeset can usually be used with the rear panel mic jack,
and normally will require bias to be on.
