the USB teething problems, I have a complete KIO3 that I'll send to

I think we're seeing monthly reports of KIO3 ports being blown up by 
having it connected to a PC and creating a ground loop. I wonder why 
this keeps happening over and over.


The proper solution is to have an entry panel through which EVERYTHING 
is grounded and connected together. There have been a fair number of 
publications on this over the years.


I do wonder though, if a full galvanic isolator would also help? It 
won't replace the ground panel, but having heard the stories (followed 
by "I need the KIO3 repaired and can't get parts / Elecraft repair is 
backed up") I wonder about this measure.


How such an isolator box is powered would be another matter though. But 
I wonder who tried this?

Many faults occur via the station ground system.  This fault indicated a 
difference in potential between the station ground and the AC Mains 
ground.  In many cases, the station equipment is connected between 
station ground and the AC Mains ground.   The nearby lightning strike 
produces a difference in potential between two or more grounds to which 
the station is effectively connected in series with these grounds. Thus 
the current flow is through the station equipment, even if power is off 
and antennas are disconnected.


My example:  A cow is standing under a tree during a thunder storm.  
Lightning hits the tree and the energy is dispersed through the earth in 
all directions.  Cow is connected via its 4 feet to the earth at 4 
places.   The difference in potential between the 4 connected places 
electrocutes the cow.   Lightning did NOT strike the cow.


If your station ground IS NOT BONDED to the AC Mains ground, (a) this is 
in violation of the NEC, (b) one has a high likelihood for damage in the 
event of a nearby lightning strike.


Second, each piece of equipment MUST be bonded to a common point.    
There is a difference in bonding and grounding. Station lightning 
protection and grounding is always outside of the structure, never inside.


Jim, K9YC and Ward Silver, N0AX in the ARRL book /GROUNDING AND BONDING 
for the Radio Amateur/ contains a wealth of correct information.  Use 
this information to defuse "old ham lore" regarding grounding.

Not owning a K3, but have the KX3..and other rigs!? Perhaps 
disconnecting the antenna (before and during an electrical storm)? from the 
shack hardware makes little boards like the K103 enjoy a longer life.? Just

Hi EdI just solved a similar problem with my K3 (s/n 1900 plus all K3 upgrades) 
setting up WSJTx after Windows 10 update and having to renumber COM ports that 
use FTDI chip USB adapters.  I could not set my usual config for CAT and PTT 
(using CAT) and got a PTT ERR on the K3 which would go into TX but without 
power on WSJTx boot up.  Just pushing TEST on and then off reset the K3IO and I 
was off to the races.  This is in the original K3 manual, page 19 I think.  

Found on a previous post after search PTT ERR.
In the K3 Manual:  " If a PC or other device asserts RTS or DTR DIGOUT 1 while 
you're in the PTT-KEY menu entry, the K3 will enter TEST mode as a precaution. 
Page 19 In the tables below, 0 = 0 VDC, and 1 = device Normally, when the K3 is 
turned on, a 5-VDC logic supply voltage. signal appears on ACC pin 7 (K3 ON)."
I thought my K3IO was toast as WSJTx software and FTDI serial USB adapters all 
worked fine with my FT-1000mp.  This was caused by adjusting the K3 MENU and 
CONFIG setting while changing things on WSTJx at the same time.must have 
been in panic mode. Hi.

[Elecraft] KIO3-B Sound w/ Faros

I updated my K3 to the KIO3-B USB/Sound card. When I try to monitor beacons
using Faros and set the audio to the K3 Soundcard, the application locks up
the scanning, waterfall and I show the red icon for the sound card. Has
anybody else had this challenge and found a resolution? Using a line-out
audio to my computer soundcard still works, but that defeats the purpose of
having the KIO3-B.

Part most likely to fail due to ESD / Static / External events.

Main computer works.  Netbook works.  Main computer uses USB wifi, so I

[Elecraft] KIO3 boards wanted--redux

I asked for help with my K3 to computer connection on this reflector, 
and then asked for a used set of KIO3 boards.  John, KH7T, was nice 
enough to send me his old set of KIO3 boards for free.  I replaced my 
boards, and, while I was at it, looked at the original set for fried 
chokes (they taste best when fried), because, Keith, WE6R, an Elecraft 
tech, suggested that these might be the problem.  The result is that I 
still have the problem, but did not get to enjoy fried chokes.


To recap:

1. Following a power surge, my K3 continued to operate, but no longer
   spoke or listened to the computer to which it was connected.
2. I bought a new serial-to-USB converter from Elecraft, and tried it
   with the K3, using my main computer and a also an older Acer netbook.
3. I checked to see if the USB ports were bad, but other devices work
   in the same ports.
4. I then replaced the KIO3 boards with the new ones and repeated the
   check.

Nothing has made a difference.  I test by trying to connect with the 
Elecraft K3 utility that has worked before.


My next step will be to contact Elecraft and send the radio to them, 
meaning a *minimum* service charge of $100, plus parts, plus insured 
shipping both ways, unless someone on this reflector has deeper ears 
than I have and can pull something else out of them.

[Elecraft] KIO3 boards wanted

I am the ham who asked for replacement KIO3 boards.  At the present 
time, I have received several offers of boards at different prices, and 
several offers of free boards.  I am in communication with a ham with 
free boards now, and I will let this reflector know how that went.  
Meanwhile, I urge those who still have boards not to discard them, but 
to save them for the next ham who has such a problem.  The only 
alternative from Elecraft is the $400 upgraded set.

replacing gear? This has happened in my family and the utility covered the

code), and it looks like my KIO3 boards took a hit via the computer.  I 
tried a new serial-USB converter, and that does not fix the problem.  
Elecraft suggests that the next step be a new set of I/O boards, but, of 
course, they no longer make them for the K3, and I will have to spend 
$400 for the K3S version, which, while an improvement, is not one that I 
need.  If someone has upgraded his/her K3 with the new boards, I would 
like to discuss purchase of the old ones, if they are fully working.

If you are going to take the new KIO3B, and existing KIO3 board becomes 
redundant.  I would like to take KIO3 Audio I/O module E850236.  It is just a 
small piece of PCB and can be shipped easily in a padded envelope by airmail.

I guess the good news is that because so many of you folks think you’ll pass, 
I’ll get mine sooner ;-)

I consider the fact that it provides a single-cable multi-function interface 
between computer and radio, eliminating other miscellaneous and potentially 
problematic goop in between, to be a good thing.  And stuff costs what it 
costs. So even though I’m mostly a luddite who doesn’t generally treat a radio 
as simply one more in a long chain of computer peripherals, I’ll most likely 
have an order placed as soon as it shows up :-)

[Elecraft] KIO3 problem

I fired my K3 up in preparation for CQWW RRTY this weekend. I run MixW.

When I checked the CAT operation, it wouldn't work properly ie gave me 
some monsensical frequency readings in MixW's log. I thought it may have 
been a new motherboard in my PC, but checked the operation with my K2 
and it worked fine. The settings of the K3 are:


RS232 38499 b
KIO3 nor

MixW's settings are 38400 8 N 1, unchanged from the last time I used the 
rig.

COM 1 on the PC motherboard is set to 38400 8 N 1.

I tried a PCie dual serial port card in the PC motherboard - same problem.

I turned the baud rate down to 19200 in the K3, MixW and on the PC 
motherboard and all now seems to work as it should. I can live with 
that. But the question remains: is the KIO3 board becoming faulty?

my mail below was not clear in this respect, I did not find the expression TX 
and RX unusual, 
but it was the fact that a transmitting line is called RX(D) and a receiving 
line TX(D). But Don 
W3FPR enlightened me that this is correct because the K3 is a Terminal Device 
and transmits 
on RXD, where the DCE device (computer) is receiving on RXD and transmits on 
TXD.

If I recall correctly from my modem days --
The naming of RXD and TXD is correct for the K3 (it is incorrect for the K2)
A DCE device (computer port for example) transmits on TXD and receives 
on RXD
A DTE device (like the K3 or other terminal device) transmits on RXD and 
recieves from TXD.
Yes, it is confusing, but the standard goes back *much* earlier than 
either the K2 or the K3.

[Elecraft] KIO3 Pinout

I have a question regarding the KIO3 layout. I'd like to abuse 3 pins for 
adding a GPS mouse to 
my TrxPtc in the K3. According to the KIO3 description in the user manual Pin 
1, 8,9 are not 
used. In the list of pins I am also missing Pin 7. I used Pin 9 as GPS VCC 
(5V), Pin 8 is GPS in 
and Pin 5 Ground. The Trxptc has GPS out - is there anything on Pin 7 of the K3 
in the 
moment?

TXD and a receiving line is called RXD, no matter on which device it is 
located.

[Elecraft] KIO3 Not Working

I started to download the new firmware and the computer wasn't talking to 
the K3. I have rebooted everything and still no communication. I have tried 
with two computers, one with the USB adapter and the other straight serial, 
still no luck.


Checked the K3 Config:KI03 and all I get is 'nor', no other options. The 
manual isn't very clear on what options will show with no transverter 
attached.


The ports on the both computers work with other devices.

The K3 (#123) has been flawess 'til now.

Any thoughts or other things to try?
