Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500, befuddlement re: cables
Hi, Joe! I'd recommend a KPA500, a KAT500, one KPAK3AUX cable set, and one E850463 Optional KAT500 to KPA500 Cable. The KPAK3AUX "cable set" consists of three pieces, a 15-pin cable, a Y, and an little DB-15 M-F coupler with one pin cut that we call a "key line interrupter". You might want more Ys if you have several things that need to go to the K3 ACC connector. I use two Ys for three 15-pin uses, amp/ATU, antenna switch, FSK/PTT to an interface box. The 15-pin cable from the KPAK3AUX "cable assembly" goes from K3 to KAT500. The E850463 15-pin cable goes from KAT500 to KPA500. And you'll need a few coax jumpers, K3 to KPA500 RF input, KPA500 RF output to KAT500 XMTR, and then your existing antenna goes into one of the KAT500 ANT connectors. The picture you need is in the KAT500 owner's manual, Figure 1. If you have a SteppIR controller that needs to also be able to interrupt the amplifier key line, then you need the Figure 2 diagram. The hobby is called "wireless"... 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Joseph Carter Sent: Sunday, January 12, 2014 2:04 PM To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500, befuddlement re: cables After 45+ years as a ham I am contemplating adding an amplifier - a KPA500 and KAT500 to complement my precious K3 and P3. I have downloaded both manuals and it must be my age catching up with me - I am flummoxed by trying to figure out the cables I need. If I understand it, I will need the cable that comes with the KPA500 and the "KPAK3AUX" while not necessary allows complete integration with the K3. What confuses me is what cables I need to order with the KAT500 - I see "E850863" and "E180980" cables. Obviously, I want to just place one order and make sure I have all I need but don't want to order anything I don't. I seem to recall a number of issues discussed on the reflector - did a search of the archives but still don't understand - especially about the "Y" cable. Love my K3, P3, and KX3 and all I have learned from the group here. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500, befuddlement re: cables
Hi Joe, The KPAK3AUX Cable set (includes a DE15HD 15-pin cable, to attach the K3 ACC to the KPA500 AUX connectors, and a Y-Cable to be able to use the other signals on the K3's ACC connector, like DIGOUT1 to turn on the 6-meter preamp, or the band signals for an antenna decoder/switcher, plus a Keying Line Interrupter). You probably got this with your KPA500. When you get the KAT500 you should also get the E850863 cable, which is identical to the 15-pin cable you have in the KPAK3AUX cable set. (You can, though, use a 15-pin DE15HD cable (NOT a SVGA cable), but it is just easier to get the correct cable from Elecraft.) So when you get the KAT500, unplug the 15-pin cable from the KPA500 AUX connector and connect it to the KAT500 XCVR connector. (This give a 15-pin cable from the K3 ==> KAT500). Now, connect the E85o863 cable from the KAT500 AMP connector to the KPA500 AUX connector. Here's what is should look like: K3 ACC <> KAT500 XCVR KAT500 AMP <===> KPA500 AUX Where <=> are the 15-pin DE15HD cables. That's all you need to get going. You will NOT need a RCA keying cable because all the keying control is in the 15-pin cables. The Y-cable is used if you want to use, say, DIGOUT1 to switch a 6m preamp. Then plug one end of the Y-cable into the K3 ACC connector and use the two ends of the Y to go to the 15-pin cable going to the KAT500 and to the preamp. 73, Fred KE7X Fred Cady Fred KE7X "The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration and Operation 2nd ed" "The Elecraft KX3 - Going for the summit" www.ke7x.com or www.lulu.com (Coming soon: "The Elecraft KPA500 and KAT500 - the K-Line Dream Station") fcady at ieee dot org > -Original Message- > From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft- > boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Joseph Carter > Sent: Sunday, January 12, 2014 3:04 PM > To: Elecraft > Subject: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500, befuddlement re: cables > > After 45+ years as a ham I am contemplating adding an amplifier - a > KPA500 and KAT500 to complement my precious K3 and P3. > I have downloaded both manuals and it must be my age catching up with > me - I am flummoxed by trying to figure out the cables I need. > If I understand it, I will need the cable that comes with the KPA500 > and the "KPAK3AUX" while not necessary allows complete integration with > the K3. > What confuses me is what cables I need to order with the KAT500 - I > see "E850863" and "E180980" cables. > Obviously, I want to just place one order and make sure I have all I > need but don't want to order anything I don't. > I seem to recall a number of issues discussed on the reflector - did a > search of the archives but still don't understand - especially about > the "Y" cable. > Love my K3, P3, and KX3 and all I have learned from the group here. > Thanks es 73, > de Joe, w9jc > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
